October is speeding up quick… so much happening this week, I thought we’d have a quick look at midweek action. It seems like CMJ (Oct. 21-25) starts earlier every year but in reality, it’s starting later than last year.
Actually it’s both– the heavily hyped “showcases” & parties start a week before and run a week after the actual festival, blurring the end of October into an indie rock/nyu kid-dominated hell!
Probably realizing that they can make more money on their own bill than some stupid label showcase, the Dirtbombs are playing three shows this week– tonight at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple (Clinton/Washington area of Brooklyn), tomorrow night at Maxwell’s in Hoboken and Thursday night at Southpaw in Park Slope with local soul groups The Mighty Fine and the Nouvellas.
If the Dirtbombs aren’t enough (well, they aren’t for some people), then you’ve got Clackamas, OR garage-punk legends™
Also happening are a Vivian Girls show at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday (one of 30 shows they’re doing this month) supported by some indie bands you don’t want to see. Then there’s Mike Edison with heavy friends (aka Orchestra) and the Lost Crusaders at Spiegelworld/tent/pier also on Thursday… despite the high price (and price of drinks), this venue can be fun from my experience.
In case you’re looking for non-live, non-expensive (everything is $12-$15 this week!) action, check out tonight’s FREE Hot Dog! DJ night at Matchless in Brooklyn– soul, r’n'b and garage records and 2 for 1 drinks all night. Note: we think the NYNT parties at Motor City and Beauty bar are cancelled this week.
