Friday, November 7, at Asterisk – The British are coming! The British are coming! Tomorrow night at Asterisk you’ve got the chance to see four truly great bands, two being from the UK.

The headliners, Nightingales, hail from an extra funny speaking part of the UK and they play this insanely great style of Rock’N'Roll that, to me, sounds like an unimaginable combination of The Cramps and Art Brut.

Before them we have Violet Violet, a trio from Norwich, who play a more modern style of ’70s New Wave, like a year 2000 version of The Raincoats or Kleenex. I prefer to call this style of music Newish Wave.

Second on the line up we have New York’s own Imaginary Icons. I haven’t seen them play in, probably, over a year, but every time I’ve seen them I’ve really enjoyed it. They’re one of the few bands who can actually pull off the whole New Wave sound without making it seem cheesy or forced. They remind me of Gang of Four, maybe Wire, or maybe Pere Ubu, no it’s XTC, wait no… shit. They’ve got influences coming in from all directions and they’re able to perform well crafted songs in a non pretentious, entertaining fashion. You know, the way bands are supposed to do it.

Opening the show is a breath of lighthearted air. The Totallys play fast and fun Pop Punk like gay girls in the mid to late 90s used to pay. Why are there hardly any of these bands around anymore? It’s so strange to me. Come early to check them out.

Oh yeah, I’ll be DJing the night, so bring your dancin’ legs, because I’ve got a ton of scorchers! I was thinking of bringing a bunch of New Wave and Punk Rock, but decided it might be refreshing to listen to R&B and Soul between the live bands. So yeah, I’ll be playing the same styles of music I normally DJ, but I’ve got about 25 new records I’ve never played out live yet, so you’ll here a good bit of new stuff!

Asterisk is located at 258 Johnson Ave, Brooklyn, NY
