It wasn’t so long ago that I was complaining about how boring Monday was. No more! Monday is the new Wednesday, whereas Wednesday is the new black and black is the new lolcat.

Monday

This is your last chance to see The Choke for a long time unless you’re planning to follow them around a la Phish. Before they take off for San Diego they’re playing one last show at Bowery Electric with Images and Wild Yaks. Rumor has it that Corn Mo and burlesque performer Runaround Sue are also on the bill. The show starts at either 6 or 9 depending on who you believe (probably 9, meaning 10:30, which is also the new black).

Now, if you go to that show you’ll miss Human Eye and Terrible Twos at Bruar Falls. The bill includes Stupid Party and Nude Beach (probably not a burlesque performer?) It’s the “Bands Named By Nine-Year Old Boys” bill, and it should be pretty good.

It also looks like our pal Kymber Lee NYC is DJing at Double Down Saloon. That DJ at that bar… the word “rowdy” comes to mind. No burlesque (and if you ask, you will lose a human eye) but there will be pumpkin carving. By drunk people. Should be good for a laugh.

Tuesday

It’s their “Stereo Vision” tour: the second Human Eye show this week on Tuesday night at Don Pedro. They’re sharing the stage Ex-Humans, Liquor Store, VLC and Terrible Twos for a bill which is a little more punk than the one on Monday. Anyone else notice that Human Eye is skipping Manhattan to do two shows in Brooklyn?

Tuesday is also the night for Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. DJs spinning 50’s and 60’s R’n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock and Punk. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 ’till late. Also in Brooklyn. Gee, sorry about that Manhattan.

Wednesday

Don Pedro comes through again on Wednesday. They’ve got a psych rock show featuring Whooping Crane (more “rock”), The Hidden Ratio (more “psych”), and the Honey Dos (“do”s? “dos”? I dunno.)

There aren’t so many bands playing on Wednesday but there are lots of DJ nights. Living For Kicks lands at the Satellite Lounge. DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spin everything good from the 60s, including Garage, Rocksteady, R&B and Soul. Motor City Bar (in Manhattan!) hosts its regular punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. Bring earplugs. As always Botanica is the venue for Mr. Fine Wine’s night of classic Soul grooves (no earplugs required).

Thursday

The Girls at Dawn are (already!) releasing a record. The show at Mercury Lounge with headliners Thee Oh Sees and The Fresh and Onlys is also their record release show.

A bunch of bands are playing at Trash Bar. If you can only catch one, go see local punks The Hydes at 10, because by Thursday they’ll be the new black.

There may be a soul night at Beauty Bar Brooklyn and a rock/funk/punk night at Enid’s, but I guess they’re not on our calendar anymore. Also, our calendar previously said something about Plastic Crimewave Sound, but actually they’re coming to Brooklyn in November (Knitting Factory Brooklyn on the 8th, then Bar Matchless on the 9th).
