Gloom & Doom

WeddingCake Gloom & Doom

Congratulations to GPNYC’s Charles Gaskins for marrying Masha P this weekend!
Yes, let’s celebrate the beginning of “gloom and doom” season as we like to think of it here in old New York! It’s going to be cold, cold, cold and the rain will get inside your shoes, down your back, in your hair and on the back of your jeans. Soon the dirt and dust of the streets will turn to a brown-black muck that will coat your sneakers and we’ll all get the swine flu and die.

On the bright side, there are a few shows to go to before that happens.

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Chattanooga’s heavy blues/punk duo Black Diamond Heavies and Crocodiles (a Goner board favorite) open for Horrors @ Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Hard rockers the Brought Low and the Live Ones play a Dead Flowers show at Bar Nine in Hell’s Kitchen. $5

Jonny Chan returns to live action at Don Pedro tonight with support from the Anabolics, Love-Struck and Organs.

On the DJ front, Subway Soul Club makes its debut at “the loft” a ‘secret’ venue above Public Assembly. Phast Phreddie, Fine Wine and others will spin the greatness in this small but fun space. Entrance door is next to Music Hall of Williamsburg and a cover of $6 is levied to keep the country clubbers out.

Also happening is Rebel Night at Otto’s. More Japanese rockabilly/twisters for ya. FREE.

SATURDAY:

Mike Edison & Space Liberation Army are at Knitting Factory for an early show (7:30?). This time featuring Gary Lucas (ex-Capt. Beefheart).

Over at the Production Lounge, an unusual venue on Franklin St near the Pencil Factory in Greenpoint, there’s a 6 band bill including the Demands, Angel Sluts (from Memphis), Dead Phones, WLWL and more. $6.

Down in central Brooklyn there’s a good bill with the Underthings, Jimmy & The Wolfpack, the Beat Rats and the Jayvons (?). Hank’s Saloon.

If you’re wondering where some of your pals are on Saturday, it’s a good bet they’re either a) in Portland, Oregon at the giant Scion/Vice garage festival or b) at Music Hall of Williamsburg for our very own Charles Gaskins’ wedding. Congratulations to Charles & Masha!

SUNDAY:

Memphis punks Angel Sluts try their hand at Don Pedro whilst the Raveonettes & Black Angels hit Music Hall of Williamsburg and Andy M (or is it Dave the Spazz) spins at Union Pool.

By the way, prepare yourselves for the invasion of bloggers, college kids, indie rock whores and once a year “music fans” because CMJ is on next week which means bands play shows to even more indifferent crowds than before… Many a local garage/punk band has yielded to temptation and agreed to play these travesties of shows, and we’ll grudgingly cover them…
‘Til then, keep your powder dry!

The Jayvons turned out to be really good by the way. They had Dave Amels from Reigning Sound on organ. They also brought a bunch of fans with them. This was a good show all around (I say as somebody who played in it, but it was one of those rare shows where I liked all the bands on the bill…even mine).
