The Junkman Band
suddenly remembers that
it is a band
and plays a gig
at Union Pool
on Tuesday
night

Monday

Have you checked out DJ Knifefight yet? He’ll be spinning all “pre-Beatles” rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar Monday night. No cover, free pool and “drink specials all night”, starts at 10.

Tuesday

Once a year, when the stars are in the correct alignment and Venus is getting in Jupiter’s way (or whatever the technical term is. “Cockblocks”?) the Junkman Band appears. This year they will materialize at Union Pool and play some spooooky rock-n-roll. They will be joined by The Nasties (clearly some sort of demons) and Lucinda Black Bear (a forest spirit? wow are you ever in the wrong place) for a multiple-record release party. I believe the show starts at 9pm and costs $6.

Once again Tuesday is time for Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless featuring DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50′s and 60′s R’n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 ’till late.

Wednesday

Over at 171 Lombardy (also called “Galaxie”, I believe) they’ll be opening an exhibition called “End of the World/Center of the Universe” with a show (quite possibly free) featuring five local bands: Chicken Snake, Woman, LoveStruck, Religious To Damn, and The Big Disappointments. Now all you have to do is get there.

Also on Wednesday, the weekly DJ conjunction occurs. In Brooklyn, DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. In Manhattan, Juke Joint Howl takes over Otto’s Shrunken Head with DJs Mike Mortician and Mike Decay spinning Blues, 40s and 50s R&B, and other just-pre-rock-n-roll sounds. New York Night Train Wednesdays is on over at Motor City Bar and features DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. I believe they’re doing a thing for the holidays where they give away whichever records they play all night! Then there’s Mr. Fine Wine spinning some fine Soul music at Botanica (in Manhattan). All of it is free.

Thursday

On Thursday The Black Hollies return from touring the U.S. to turn off that iron they left on and also to play a gig at Pianos. I hate when that happens (any good band playing at Pianos, I mean). They’re on first (at icon cool Its getting gruesome out there. and the cover is $8.

It’s also time for the Shalitas Holiday Spectacular at Public Assembly. The Christmas one (if we forgot to list their Arbor Day Spectacular, tough, you missed it). Featuring The Shalitas (duh), The Johns, Your 33 Black Angels, Eagle Hawk Falcon Owl, plus DJ Shimmy starting it off and keeping the music going in between sets. Starts early (8pm?), $8 cover.

Kind of an odd party at Beauty Bar Brooklyn. DJ Jonathan Toubin will be DJing a release party for BBB’s own brand of vodka! Looks like it starts really early (7pm) so maybe this is a good place to start your drinking evening?
