It’s warmed up so you know what that means– weekends full of rain. The first inkling of Spring. At least there’s lots to do this weekend. Wear shoes with grip and pack a $1 umbrella you’ll lose instantly at the bar. Fun!
TONIGHT (FRIDAY):
Buncha live action tonight, including:
- Anabolics & Nouvellas play a Joan Jett/Runaways tribute at Spike Hill for L Magazine. We’ve long held that the L in L Magazine stands for Looosa, but this event isn’t too bad. It’s a tie-in with the forthcoming Runaways movie. Yes, Dakota Fanning, etc. Kim Fowley is promised a major role (his character at least), so we’re hopeful this won’t be another Sid & Nancy. Anyway it’s free and you might get a ticket to the movie.
- The Above & Boston band the Sunday Saints (not to be confused with Montreal’s Sunday Sinners) hit Bushwick Music Studios on Waterbury st in (shock!) Bushwick. Should be a cool gig, I’ve heard the sound is boss there. There’s also some DJs so check it out– it’s a good preview of next month’s big Above album release party for Hullabaloo.
- Over at Rose Live Music on the part of Grand St almost under the BQE, there’s the Ex Caminos and Al Street (a Daptone guy). Should be a good night of highly proficient playing– soul/funk/boogaloo.
- At Bowery Ballroom, Boston’s Upper Crust perform with Les Sans Culottes… should be a show of high theatrics.
- And at Don Pedro, it’s another Midnite Till Death featuring the lads of Liquor Store plus some other bands we’re not too familiar with– Ultrabunny, etc. You can’t really go wrong with these shows though, especially now that they’ve found a perfect home at DP.
On the DJ front:
Toubin assumingly hits Home Sweet Home with another dose of ‘Shakin’ All Over Sideways Down’ – which we’re informed now carries a cover of $3 or so.
DJs ‘Otto’ Bahn & Miss January 1963 will be at K&M with their Fortress of Solidtunes 60′s night (FREE); there COULD also be Devils Night at Diamond Bar. It’s been on the calendar for a while but has been suspiciously silent for a couple of weeks.
SATURDAY:
Live:
- Have a CHEESEBURGER at Bell House… maybe. I didn’t add this one to the calendar, and beyond loving the namesake, I’m not too sure what to expect from them. One member is the hotshot behind Adult Swim’s SuperJail… also they have a member whose name is Joe Bradley, but he’s not THAT Joe Bradley? Um ok.
- Over at Don Pedro, it’s Lady Bree‘s (she of booking and bartending fame) birthday with the Electric Mess and Traveling Circle among others. Expect a night more towards psych than garage.
- At Freddy’s Back Room on Dean St in Brooklyn, Jimmy & the Wolfpack reunite (!!!) to play a show in support of the venue’s fight to survive the oncoming New York Nets development debacle. It might be a lost cause, but that won’t stop you from enjoying every minute of this totally ridiculous and totally great party band.
DJing:
Toubin’s back at Glasslands with the Soul Clap! Dance Contest ($5); Jumpy and guest DJ Big Sir (Whooping Crane) do the Flip City 60′s thing at Blackout Bar in Greenpoint (FREE).
That’s it for me folks… cha cha cha!
