Need a good laugh? Who doesn’t! Here’s something for you– local New York publication Deli “oh wait, it still exists?” Magazine apparently has a Chart for the most popular Garage/Punk/Soul/Revival/Etc bands in NYC.
There are 93 bands charted including bands we’ve written about in the past such as LoveStruck, the Rats, the Back C.C.’s and links are provided to each band’s MySpace page.
So who’s Deli’s current chart-topper?
Star Fucking Hipster!
Yep, that’s right. A self-styled crustie “Punk / Metal / Ska” band is topping the big apple’s charts right now, no doubt riding high on the blanketing coverage of area radio play, bookings at the largest clubs in the city, in-store shows, name checking on popular NYC blogs, features on Page Six with them pallin’ around with slumming stars andwaitasecond!
The ‘Charts’ are apparently based on something called “web popularity” (no explanation given). So basically, you sign up your band, their computer does a Google and BAM! You’re #1 baby!
Or in the case of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, a mere 6th (sorry Jon, ‘Care Bears on Fire’ are clearly more relevant to today’s, er, ‘web’ than you).
Sadly, there aren’t even enough bands to fill Deli’s 300 spot chart. So #93 on the chart, ‘Sonic Rebellion’, whose Myspace promise– “powerful, adrenaline-pumping music for the masses” — has reached an impressive following of fourteen friends, ranks DEAD LAST. They’re obviously The LEAST popular band in New York! Except that they’re also #47 on the chart.
I think Kim Fowley is laughing and crying at the same time somewhere.
Thanks to Lady Anne for the tip.
Class Dismissed. Now go and sign up your fake bands (Step 1: create doowop/metal fusion myspace page…) !
