Another three-day weekend

This weeks’ picture is in honor of Sunday,
the day which is somehow both part of the weekend
and not part of the weekend
(though this weekend it is definitely part of the weekend!)

Sunday

Let us begin at the beginning, which is historically 5pm on Sundays. It happens that way when everyone you know wakes up at 4.

Up at LIC Bar in Queens you can enjoy a free show featuring heavy psych band Whooping Crane and Soul/R&B stylists The Solid Set. The show will be outdoors in their lovely beer garden, and there will be BBQ (thought that’s not free).

So, what would you like for your dinnertime entertainment? I’m not sure that touring with Green Day is exactly a convincing recommendation, but based on their songs on MySpace this band Prima Donna actually sounds pretty good. Not punk but glam rock, served nice and raw, backed by The Dirty Shames and The Threads. They’re at Bowery Electric starting at 8. $10 cover, 18+.

As for actual punk rock bands, The Bloody Muffs and Out Of Order will not be mistaken for anything else. Their aural demolition derby beging at 8, has a $10 cover and is 18+. Hmmm, two in a row. There is also a show at Death By Audio featuring Pink Reason and Crazy Spirit. Hadn’t heard of them myself, but they both seem to be punk bands with a bit of a psych element (Pink Reason moreso). That show is $7 and may be all ages.

If that’s all just a bit too violent for your tastes, join DJs Dave The Spazz and Andy Maltz for a more sophisticated approach to music (which is sayin’ something!) They spin the sounds of the 50s and 60s, soul, garage, rarities at Union Pool starting at 10pm. No cover. Alternatively! head to Manhattan Inn in Brooklyn on Manhattan (Ave.) for Soul Sunday, with a guest soul DJ spinning Soul music. Simple, eh? Soul Sunday starts at 11, and there is no cover.

Monday

And Monday says “Simple? I’ll show you simple!” Tonight we have one thing on our calendar: Spindletop Soul-Jazz-R&B night at Botanica. It’s a mod music night with DJ Perry Lane. Starts at 10, no cover.

Tuesday

If ya’ missed ‘em on Sunday, or even if you didn’t (which includes everyone not named Schrödinger) you might want to check out Whooping Crane when they join The Rats, Minerva Lions and Red Horse at the Underclass Revue at Bowery Electric. That’s a lot of really good rock music (or “country-grunge” in Red Horse’s case) for $5. They say it starts at 8, but nobody believes them.

I keep trying to tell you about this Hot Dog! thing at Bar Matchless. You know, great DJs, 2-for-1 drinks, starts at 10, no cover? My friend Pat goes every week and he says it’s the best thing ever! But do you listen? NOOOooooo. All right, that’s it, I’m outta here!
