Something may be afoot on Ludlow St…

Cake Shop has long been one of the few venues that consistently books good garage & punk bands in Manhattan.  Part hipster cafe and part basement venue, it’s hosted luminaries and lowlifes such as LiveFastDie, Nobunny, the Spits, Swingin’ Neckbreakers, the Black Lips as well as many local bands and several of my own Hullabaloo! shows over the years… and all on a street better known for A&F-wearing douches and high-priced “indie rock” bars.

Now the people behind Cake Shop (the Bodor brothers) are employing Kickstarter, an online fundraising site that collects cash for non-profits and small businesses, to raise some money to start what they describe as a new “online community”… the new site would feature live videos of bands plus interviews with the acts, and stand-up comedy.

The goal seems pretty lofty ($10,000 by September 30) but they’re offering a variety of inducements depending on your donation level… Cake Shop and associates have really been on the move in the past couple of years, expanding beyond Cake to Bruar Falls in Williamsburg and the Capeshok Booking / record label effort.  I guess it’s kind of a natural move into some sort of online thing, but it does sound oftly familiar (Vice, anyone?)

So far it stands at about $595 donated… care to donate? More details here.
