Wow, here’s a true surprise: a weekend packed with show goodness! So many darn things to do, where to even begin? Oh yeah…
TONIGHT (FRIDAY):
Let’s start with Manhattan.
Ludlow’s Cake Shop sees a performance by Nick Gazin favorite Cerebral Ballzy… and some other bands.
Real Gone! blasts off again at Otto’s Shrunken Head on 14th this month featuring Caterpillers, a punk band I’ve heard good things about, the Runaway Suns and Madam Robot & the Lust Brigade. As always, it’s free and DJed by our own Captain Heartlock and pal Kitty Beat.
And, over at Home Sweet Home, Kid Congo Powers joins pal Jonathan Toubin once again for the weekly Shakin All Over Sideways Down dance party. $3 cover.
Over in Brooklyn, you might venture to Don Pedro where you’ll find punk-rocking Hydes and the Jigglers, a new group from hey-we-haven’t-seen-you-in-a-while Backdoor Stan. No idea on cover but think cheap, real cheap.
At the Commodore across the street from Knitting Factory, you could visit the debut of a new night called Discophonic Walk from soul vets Phast Phreddie and Girlsoul. No cover to dance all night and fried chicken is on hand!
Not far away, at Union Pool, a night of blazingly loud psych rock with La Otracina, Wizardry and more.
And, we believe, Another Scorcher’s rocksteady / soul party is at Huckleberry.
SATURDAY:
Start early (why not?) at Brooklyn’s Beauty Bar with a hot tag team: Miss Mary-Clancey and Ambassador Hazy spinnin’ righteous soul tunes. You’ll be served by the lovely Anna Copa Cabanna at the bar and even spend a little less (happy hour!) than you usually would. Good sounds, pretty people, cheap booze. It’s a winning combination. 6-10PM / FREE.
Later on there’s all kinds of live action (thanks promoters for taking the hint and booking SATURDAYS for a change).
- At Southpaw, it’s the return of Dig Deeper with Staten Island Italian soulster Dean Parrish (known for dancefloor filler Tell Her!). He’s backed by the very solid sounds of the Solid Set and joined by the Black Hollies (opening). $15 at the door for this feast for the ears.
- If you’re in New Jersey, head over to Maxwell’s for a great bill with the Doughboys (reunited 60′s garagers featuring Richard X Heyman), the Neutron Drivers and Brooklyn’s own Electric Mess. $8 and EARLY START! (Mess on at 8:30!)
- At Glasslands, a three band bill where we’ve got one recommendation: the Specific Heats, who sound remarkably like the mid 80′s garage/psych wave. It’s a sound rarely done these days so check it out if you’re adventurous enough to brave hipsterville. $?
SuperModelDeathDive happens once again at Matchless with the triple threat of Twin Guns, Love-Struck and Sorceress (not necessarily in that order). DJs will be on hand too so swish the night away!
And, last but definitely not least, Captain Heartlock and Miss Janury 1963 try to out-rank the Commodore with their Regeneration night (now regenerated into a new venue). The far out sounds that are way in will be delivered in analogue format and bounced off your cerebral cortex ’til the wee hours. FREE!
That’s all folks! See ya next time!
