Quit Yer Whining.
What’s poppin’, boppers? We’ve come to the end of a monsoon like April no worse for wear and the summer light is staring us down at the end of the tunnel. Cherish the love we have by going out on these last days before a masterful weekend to come and making havoc on the streets and in the clubs! There’s no shortage of distractions, so let’s get to it:
Wednesday April 27
CopyCat time again, kittens! Tonight’s edition of the twice-monthly rock and roll tribute party is dedicated to the rad music of Kate Pierson & The B-52s. Doing honors tonight are Honeychild Coleman (Pollen, Apollo Heights), the Ye-Ye 60′s French Pop stylings of The Lightning Kites and the self described “Garage Rock meets Liberace(?)(!)” band The Nervous Breakdowns. Outrageous! Your own Private Idaho opens at 10 tonight and is free as our country never was! At Otto’s Shrunken Head, of course…
If you’re into psychedelic Wurlitzer and soulful pop jams then you’re into Minerva Lions, who are performing around 9pm tonight at Union Pool. They tore it up at Perfect Prescription a month ago and they aim to repeat the sweet damage at their first show at the hip bastion of loose morals and tacos. $6 cover???
Cool kid from Philly Daniel Kisbaugh is in town tonight for his monthly throwdown of punk, glam, garage, mod and “punch you in the appendix” rock and roll selections at St. Jerome on the Lower East Side - Easy Action is the name, and trouble is the game. No cover, 10pm!
New York Night Train rolls on even though master chief operator Toubin is on the road, with Jen “JR” Reynolds filling in for him tonight at Motor City. You know the deal – late, loose, and libertine.
And as always, the best soul music being spun anywhere in the tri state can be heard at Botanica where Mr. Fine Wine holds court from 10pm till 2am. All that sweetness for no cover as well…
Thursday April 28th
Oh look, a rock and roll party at Bruar Falls: DAED PIZZA PRESENTS: Games (featuring ex members of Carbonas and Busy Signals), Baby Shakes and White Wires. Fun! First bands at 8 and so is the cover…
Super shoegazers HEAVEN are headlining at Death by Audio along with Invisible Days and Dead Leaf Echo. Step away from the reverb!
Stylish gypsy scenester of the night Kelle Calco and his glam & twang rock and roll band The Colored Boys perform at a special live music edition of his debauched weekly party Ladyland at The Hudson Hotel! They’re joined by The Bowery Riots and The Compulsions, you’ve got Ian El Dorado and Miss Guy on DJ duty, there’s $5 dollar Jameson ALL NIGHT and this shit is FREE. Free pool to boot! A hot one…356 W 58TH St between 8th and 9th Avenue…
Get your R&B fix at R BAR tonight with live sets by the fantastic Solid Set, soulstress led The Liz Colby Sound and the hard blues and brass of King Bee and the Stingers. Twig the Wonderkid hosts and DJs. 9pm doors, $5 cover and drink specials all night…
It’s Shake Frantic at Huckleberry Bar, the kinda upscale lounge on Grand Street in Williamsburg that is host to many of the coolest DJ’s of our scene. Mike Crash spins all kinds rockabilly, doo-wop, garage and r&b records for YOU, from 10pm till late.
Thursday at Otto’s Shrunken Head always means Move Your Mule, where Agent Jay, Bunny Punch and pals spin dub, ska and punk music for the children from 10pm till close…

That’s it for me, punks! Shimmy’s got your weekend forecast on Friday, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you all about Power Pop-a-Licious, the big 2 day festival taking place at Asbury Lanes on Saturday and Sunday that brings together power pop, garage rock and punk bands from all over the country! It’s masterminded by the king daddy of powerpop Paul Collins (playing on Sunday!) and will also feature local loonies of the scene The Dirty Shames, The Electric Mess and The Baxx Si-Si’s. The weather’s gonna be fantastic this weekend, the bill and hijinks are gonna be stuff of legend and it’s way easier to get to than you think, so get to getting, NYC! GaragePunk NYC is one of many proud sponsors of this, so check out the Facebook Page for more info.
See you out there, wild child!
