Your Big Fat Overstuffed Hyper Sexy Rock and Roll Weekender

A little bit you, a little bit me, a lot of smoke

Aim Fire 193x300 Your Big Fat Overstuffed Hyper Sexy Rock and Roll Weekender

I don’t know how we got to the last week of June already, but…just look at this…look how much is going down  just tonight. There’s so much going on that a lesser (wo)man could hurt themselves if they got too ambitious. Hope you’ve taken your vitamins. Let’s not waste any time…

Friday June 24th

The Underclass Revue and Puta Records present the first of what’s hoped to be a good long series of 7 inch Recording Shows at Local 269 in the LES! The concept is elegant in it’s simplicity and savage in it’s deliverance: Punk and Garage Rock bands play with abandon, audience get’s blotto wound up, the show gets pressed onto sweet vinyl. Tonight  (in order) Tommy Volume (The Star Spangles), The Rats, The Dirty Shames, The Brimstones and Born Loose are guaranteed to tear this little dive apart! $7 cover and loco drink deals to encourage the mood…The Rats also will be filming a music video for their song “Fingerbang Gang” during their set, so if you see a bunch of hot rocker chicks in leather jackets doing weird synchronized dancing, that’s what’s going on and you’re not that fucked up. $7 cover! First act on at 7:30 prompt as they have to run a tight ship with all the mayhem going on with this one…

Over in Park Slope BK at rock and roll Bocce Ball court Union Hall, Lee Greenfield’s Dead Flowers Productions present a night of maximum psycho garage rock and fuzzed out power pop when Detroit’s The Sights ride into to town to headline a bill featuring the mighty Insomniacs and The Electric Mess! $8 Cover with first band (The Mess) on at 9pm sharp!

The Sights – Rock and Roll Circus

MEANWHILE! At The Charleston: Live loud punk rock bill featuring the Rickenbacker and drums duo Sexy Crimes and garage punkers The Amputees! They’re joined by Cheesequake, Nuclear Santa Claust and Urgent Fury… Showtime’s at 8pm and the cover is $7, kid!

Big ole’ throwdown of a show at Brooklyn’s The Knitting Factory, with Mark Sultan (King Khan & BBQ) showing us what he’s been up to since that legendary duo’s (temporary?) demise. Joining him are bratty punk duo Bleeding Knees Club and the Electric Delta swagger of Daddy Long Legs…8:30 show and a reasonable $10 dollar cover!

MEANWHILE! At The Bell House in gorgeous Gowanus Brooklyn, it’s another edition of Dig Deeper! Tonight it’s legendary soul dad Syl Johnson! If you missed this guy when he sold out Southpaw a bit back here’s your chance to catch him in action again! With soul sisters The Sweet Divines opening the night up for him and you…DJ Honky & Mr. Robinson spin hot wax in between bands and into the night in the front room! Doors at 8…Tickets are $20 if you buy them in advance HERE, not sure how much more it’ll be at the door…

Syl Johnson – Different Strokes

Laura Rebel Angel’s got an orange Gretsch and her own group, The Screaming Rebel Angels, and they’re playing two sets of grimy rockabilly tonight at The Brooklyn Rod & Gun Club – which is a LEGIT private outdoorsman sports club and not the name of some faux-rustic hipster dive – located at 59 Kent Ave in Williamsburg. If this doesn’t already sound interesting enough, your $10 cover gets you FOOD!!!!!, TWO Drinks and the show! Starts at 9pm…

If you missed these bands during their varied shows at the Northside Festival last weekend you get another chance this one to catch The Strange Boys, White Fence and The Babies – they’ll be at  92Y in Tribeca tonight…catch em’ at 9pm at the mainstage…$12 cover…

Mississippi born rocker duo Bass Drum of Death pays our city a little visit, playing at The Mercury Lounge tonight…not sure exactly what time but assume EARLY if you really want to see them as the club has some other unrelated whackness programmed for the rest of the evening…

And as it’s Friday, it’s…(what else)…THE NIGHT…of 1000 and ONE…DJ’s…AND THEIR PARTIES…EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEGAH!

Last Friday of the month always means it’s time to get REAL GONE! Yours truly and my compatriots Kitty Beat, Dr. Jones and guest DJ Contra get wild spinning groovy psych, prog, garage, girl group, exotica and soul on vinyl all night, with the cherry on top being the acts we’ve procured for the back room of Otto’s Shrunken Head: Local organ riffing psych monsters The Living Kills and a rare NYC appearance by dreamy mods The London Egg! No cover and the action starts at 10pm…

Uptown Manhattanites can take refuge from boring at Columbus Avenue dive The Ding Dong Lounge, where Linda Rizzo commands you to SCREAM SHOUT AND WORK IT ALL OUT – she’s spinning tough cuts of garage, punk, psych, soul and funk. Now if that’s not a prescription for getting your ya-yas out lord knows what an aspirin will do….

Back in Williamsburg at rocker pinball bar The Satellite Lounge catch Miss Party Pants Lady Bree and Matt Hollywood of The Brian Jonestown Massacre spinning all kinds of twisted from 10pm till close…no cover…

This week’s edition of Shakin’ All Over stars host Jonathan Toubin and his guest, Austin TX DJ Second Line Social spinning soul music for the debauched Manhattan masses…$3 cover after midnight and the code for the night is Breakaway…as per usual Metropolis Happy Hour takes place prior to Shakin’ , with Ethan Miller of Outside Eye spinning from 8pm till 11…

There’s gonna be a colossal dance party at Big Sky Works, the crazy venue with gigantic ceilings and flying trapeze artists! For real! People will be stripping down to their bathing suits and getting down on an artificial beach at Bikini Beach Blow Out! DJ’s Young Chris, BoogieMan, Small Change, and Primitive Sound System spin soul, funk, surf, ska, garage and psyche sounds to projections by video artist B.A Miale and acrobatic swing hijinks by T-Pow! (Tanya from The Wau Wau Sisters). $10 cover for what ought to be a unique party…

Saturday June 25th

You can start your rock and roll Saturday as early as 2pm today, kittens – Bar Matchless is having daytime style action with a live performance by my new favorite surf band The Apehangers…I heard there might be some kind grilling situation but don’t quote me on that…shit’s FREE, son!

If you’re going to that then you may as well stick around the hood for a few as Super Model Death Dive is ON at Matchless only a few hours later: tonight’s live bill features Uke player and hula hooper (at the same time????) Emily Friend,  Nervous Assistant, Natural Born (a new southern blues duo featuring lead singer Ian from Sorceress and Strange Haze drummer and wild man disc jokey Bushwick Ronnie (aka  Mr. Vacation) ) and The Mess Around! DJ’s Big Sir (Strange Haze) and Jeff D.R. (The Rats) spin all night long in the front and let’s not forget there’s that deadly one hour vodka open bar at 9pm…  That’s a lot of rock action for your $5 cover (it’s Free if you RSVP to smddnyc@gmail.com)

Stupidity, the well heeled garage punk band from Sweden, pays our town a visit tonight, pushing their new album “Move” and making trouble at The Delancey…they’re supported by The Anderson Council, all girl power popsters Party Lights (with members from The Anabolics, Quitty and the Don’ts) and Palmyra Delran. DJ C’mon spins rock and roll between and after bands…$8 cover, 8pm doors.

Rock and roll party Summer Thunder returns with another series of sweaty loud shindigs for the season at Union Pool, this weekend featuring The K Holes, Call of the Wild, Jailbait and Heavenly Blows…word has it some free Jameson is going around for the evening? ruh roh! This business start in the afternoon at 4pm and is FREE

For the second night in a row The Sights perform, this time at Mercury Lounge with Des Roar! This is another early one, maybe obscenely so, with first of the two bands at 7:30…you wanna know why? Because they’ve got to make way for Hip Hop Karaoke at 11. Really, Mercury Lounge? REALLY?

Let’s move on to something a lot more APPETIZING…Don Pedro wants to smear rib sauce ALL OVER YOUR FACE and pour ROCK IN YOUR EAR. ROCK and RIBS has got psychedelic bad mothers Heavy Hands, those show stopping soul punks Mighty Fine and The Naked Heroes starting at 10pm…and as alluded by the name of this event the kitchen is throwing on genuine BBQ ribs and other grilled meats onto their already sinfully good menu of bar food and appetizers…feed your head! Five dollar cover!

That’s IT for me, too much too soon…if I’ve missed anything we should know about you let us know in the comments. Stay weird!
