A little bit you, a little bit me, a lot of smoke

Freedom tastes like Red # 4, which I suppose is better than Coors Light...

Greetings from The Fortress of Boppa Do…Captain Heartlock here with your midweek round up of things to do and places to be for us rock and soul loonies of the Metro area…it’s the last week of June (how the fuck did that happen???) and we are right smack in front of the four day 4th of July weekend, which means bbq’s, beaches, illicit incendiary devices and red, white and blue vomit from everything you ate and drank to excess come Monday night…so it’s probably for the best that this weeks offerings are on a bit on the light side…but you know how we do, we aim to bring you quality over quantity in our selections! So…Check it:

Wednesday June 29th

Supah-Star producer and DJ Ursula 1000 will be shooting a music video for a song off of  his upcoming album Mondo Beyondo this evening, and if you’re a stylish and/or bizarro dresser and like to dance frantic he could use YOUR help! A party scene that you can be part of takes place in the downstairs lounge of The Mercer Hotel where he and our very own Charles Gaskins will be spinning nasty garage rock and soul music! Starts at 10pm…Characters welcome, is the word!

Tonight: Hoboken NJ’s shrine of rock majesty Maxwell’s hosts a benefit for Daddy-O Grande (civilian name Danny Amis) of Los Straightjackets, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment…playing this bill are The Raybeats, The Individuals, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley (of Yo La Tengo), The Schramms, and Tall Lonesome Pines…$15 tickets at the door or over the website to a most worthy cause…

Over at Otto’s Shrunken Head is the raucous after party for The Rew and Who Show, which for those who don’t know is a very DIY/Cable Access style online show that prominently features some of your favorite local rock and rollers and weirdo music outsiders, from the respected geezers of yore to today’s rabble rousers…they always shoot the show at our favorite Tiki club, and they aim to keep the party going with live performances by outrageous punk and glam bands, starting from 6pm with Subject of The Question, The Magnificent Creatures, The Rewd Onez, No Future, The Perverted Hymns, Left In The Attic and Asbury Park NJ’s TV Tramps. No cover for all this madness, as per usual at Otto’s!

More DJ Action for your Wednesday night, all freaky and free:

Of course there’s the 15 plus year strong soul party hosted and spun by none other than Mr. Fine Wine at Botanica and the rock and soul shenanigans of Jonathan Toubin’s New York Night Train at Motor City…

Philly Strongman Daniel Kisbaugh’s monthly Easy Action is tonight, where he and special guests spin mod, punk, and glam rock into the night at St. Jerome’s in the LES…

Over at The Dark Room (remember THAT place!) you’ve got DJ Erick from Golden Error spinning punk, post punk and new wave for strange underground people at that strange below the street den of iniquity…

Thursday June 30th

Alana Amram and the Rough Gems play tough and kick of a 3 (kinda folkish) band bill at Union Pool they play at 9pm for an $8  cover…

DJ Mike Crash spins 50′s / early 60′s R&B, Rockabilly, and prime garage-rock cuts at Williamsburg Brooklyn’s Huckleberry from 10pm till around 2am… no cover, fancy pants drinks, and a really quite lovely backyard accompany the groover sounds…

The Thursday Night sensation at Otto’s Shrunken Head is in full effect, as DJ’s Agent Jay, Bunny Punch and varied friends and family spin reggae, ska, punk and soul at Move Your Mule from 10pm till close, tight sounds, no cover…

That’s what I got up till the weekend, at least…TAKE A LOOK AT OUR CALENDAR and clue us in to any events that may not be on here that we ought to know about, eh (and no, not your glow stick rave party or  mope-rock cry fest)? Shimmy’s here on Friday to point you in the direction of bottle rockets and juvenille nonsense going on for the jingoistic weekend of FREEDOM!

Uber Alles!  —- Captain Heartlock
