Yeah, it’s Hot as Fuck. We know. So put a popsicle in your ear, you dummy!
It’s the weekend, dammit, and nothing stops us. Not even hell on earth. SUPER AMOUNTS OF FUN to be had, all around town, much of it where cold air conditioning and colder drinks (shocker of shocks!) are to be had! So let’s not waste any time melting in our sorrows: put on your big floppy Yoko Ono hat (SUPER KAWAII!!!) , your over-sized sunglasses, your tan lotion, and your party face and HIT IT:
Friday July 22nd
Tonight’s the first night of The Psychobilly Luau Weekender, the area’s only psychobilly rock and roll festival now entering it’s fifth year! Taking place across multiple venues between tonight and Sunday, the greasiest and most manic from our turf and beyond converge to lay waste. Tonight’s kick off at Public Assembly in Williamsburg stars local maniacs The Thunderfucks, The Othermen, Labretta Suede and the Motel 6 and visiting hooligans Planet of the Heapes (featuring Charlie Splatterhead of Los Gatos Locos and Fergal Heapes from Sharkbait), The Deadneks, Limit Club and The Silverhounds. $12 in advance (either at ticketweb or at fantastic vintage shop of Park Slope Brooklyn, Guvnor’s Vintage), $15 day of…if you plan on going to both tonight and the main event at the Bell House tommorow, two day passes are the way to go. Needless to say, there’s gonna be lots of loud guitars, slicker boys, tough pretty girls with tattoos and pinup hairdos, specialty vendors, go-go dancers in hula skirts and giveaways to be had…I say “vroom”!
Over at Otto’s Shrunken Head you can shake till you’re six feet under for ROCK CITY MORGUE, a party featuring live performance by sexy swamp fuzz rocker duo The Luxurious Faux Furs and the NYC hard punk strut of The Vondells, starting from 10pm…Not a bad way to enjoy a frozen margarita (and who does it like Otto’s?) on a Friday night, I say…No Cover, as ever…
Over at Bowery Electric: Atlanta GA glam punkers The Biters pay our little ol’ town another visit, supported by Threads On…9pm kick off for this one, $8 cover(?) Check them out getting loose:
Meanwhile in Park Slope Brooklyn at The Rock Shop, hot retro soul sounds for a hot ass night by The Jay Vons, a fantastic group who are supported by the equally soulful, psychy, Beatle-esque movements of Minerva Lions. A DJ named Honeydripper spins in between and after, and if he/she is as raunchy as the name then you’ll be alright…
As if you needed any excuses to go down to Coney Island on a summer’s eve, Mr. Fine Wine is doing a LIVE broadcast of his phenomenal WFMU program Downtown Soulville tonight on the boardwalk right in front of the Wonder Wheel at Wonder Wheel Park (Boardwalk & Denos D. Vourderis Pl – W. 12th St). Dancing on the beach! YES. Part of a WFMU listener meetup that convenes at The Coney Island Freak Bar at 7pm, with Fine Wine’s set on the boardwalk going from 8-9, and fireworks right after at 9:30…can it get more lovely?
Speaking of outdoors, it’s been a GREAT summer so far for outdoor concerts, and it goes on and on tonight: if you love Afrobeat and Nigerian rock, you best head over to the Prospect Park Bandshell tonight to catch Seun Kuti and Egypt 80! Of course being the son of Fela means he’s got the funk running through his veins, particularly since he’s been playing with his dads band since he was freaking NINE years old. This is gonna be a BEAUTIFUL JAM. Get there by 7pm. Best of all, it’s FREE!
Shakin’ All Over Sideways Down returns to it’s Friday night hawk perch at Home Sweet Home on the Chinatown / LES border, where main man Jonathan Toubin is joined by frequent flyer Ian Svenonius to spin R&B, garage and soul ’45′s for the uninitiated from 11pm till late (tonight’s “skip the line” password is Blue is Beautiful)…Metropolis Happy Hour precedes with Ethan Miller of The Outside Eye promising a grand selection of funky afrobeat and carribean/world jams…
Citizens of Uptown Manhattan REJOICE that you have a place to listen to garage, psych and funk and soul records in the company of the real, for Miss Linda Rizzo (La La Linda!) holds court tonight at The Ding Dong Lounge from 10pm till close, for your fun, education and musical health!
“The Boogaloo Omnibus” Phast Phreddie brings yet another hot edition of The Discophonic Walk to Williamsburg Brooklyn’s Commodore! With his partners Girl Soul and special guest Ted Barron, they will get those sweaty kids moving and grooving to choice soul, garage and vintage funk ’45 record jams, which they’ll need to do to work off the decadent fried vittles and ginormous frozen cocktails that place specializes in…No cover, 10pm till close!
Saturday July 23
What’d I say about what a good year this is for outdoor rock? The legendary Feelies make a rare appearance at the aforementioned Prospect Park Bandshell tonight, supported by bands Real Estate and Times New Viking. Free, yet again! Get there at 7pm and claim your personal space for rocking out with your coccyx out…
The old abandoned school house turned performance space of the LES The Suffolk is having a rock shindig tonight for the birthday of the lovely Jordan McDangerous (happy almost birthday, craze face!) featuring the mighty Dead Exs, with The Uppers, Love Bullet and Dirty Glamor along for the beer soaked ride! Starts at 10pm, not sure if or what the cover is…
Not much farther away back at Otto’s Shrunken Head is another birthday party, this time for the lady Cutie Calamity! Helping her toast off another year on earth are the talents of The Dead Tricks, Lovestruck and The Tombstone Brawlers! Starting from 10pm and no cover, but of course…
And speaking AGAIN of birthdays, tonight is the 3rd anniversary of Dig Deeper, the party that’s been keeping the the soul sounds of the 60′s alive and thriving in this city, bringing the new jacks and the legends into holy matrimony; tonight celebration features live performances by soul providers The Solid Set and the legendary Lou Pride, together under the roof of South Paw in Park Slope, BK. 9pm Doors, $15 ticket at the door ($12 in advance)…worthy!
Lastly, but nowhere near to leastly, but definitely beastly, it’s day two (aka The Main Event) of The Psychobilly Luau…this leg takes place at Gowanus Brooklyn’s The Bell House and starts in the EARLY evening (I believe around 4pm) due to the sheer number of attractions in play and the fact there’s a retro car show and full on BBQ grilling going!!!!! The lineup consists of the UK’s The Klingonz, UK Teddy Boy band Furious, The Henchmen (Los Angeles), local monster kings The Memphis Morticians, New England’s Sasquatch and the Sick-a-Billys, Psychocharger, The Arkhams, and Tex Railers Doom Town! All the big heavies of the scene under one roof, with go go dancing by Bettina May and Brooklyn Babydoll, DJ action by Spy and FUSSL, plus burlesque, raffles, specialty vendors, vintage hot rods, a fashion show, and more stuff that I’m probably forgetting! $22 in advance, $25 day of…
That’s if for now…if we’ve missed anything, you know what to do…
When I say stay cool, this time I REALLY mean it. Seriously, have fun but take care of yourself and don’t end up in a hospital.
Stay hydrated. STAY COOL.                                                                                                                                                                                    -Captain Heartlock
