Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the fifth-to-last weekend of the Summer. Â It’s going fast! Â Soon enough we’ll be making bad jokes about Siberian Tundra and posting clip art of polar bears and frozen urine.
Thankfully, the next few weekends are action packed– each one has at least one absolutely no fail show in the mix. Â I’m particularly looking forward to September 10′s total no-fail Coney Island fun day. Â But let’s focus on the weekend at hand.
TONIGHT (FRIDAY):
Action has been exploding recently on the J train, particularly at the Kosciusko stop, where you’ll find not one but two great parties this weekend. Â Tonight’s action is at one of our favorite new NYC venues, Lone Wolf. Â It’s a good lineup with the Memphis Morticians, Twin Guns and Love-Struck and our own Captain Heartlock manning the turntables til the wee hours. Â In case you hadn’t heard, AC is installed and blowing cold. $7 cover.
You’ve got so many chances for dances tonight if you’re in the star DJ mood, but besides the good captain’s spinning at the above mentioned show, it’s Manhattan or die.  There’s Home Sweet Home with Jonathan Toubin spinning soul whilst you ogle the pretty people or the taxidermy ($3); Groovy DJ Linda R spinning garage, punk and soul at uptown redoubt Ding Dong Lounge (FREE) or Rebel Night‘s rockabilly party at Otto’s Shrunken head with the Far Out/Far East greasers we all know and love (FREE).  Why either/or? No reason- hit em all!
SATURDAY:
Two shows would normally be a ‘dead’ Saturday but these two are particularly fine and provide everything you need from a Summer Saturday: pizza, grillin’, booze and lots of rock’n'roll. We should note that the Rumblers Vintage Car Show is happening across the street from Union Pool as well– always a fun stroll through the exhaust and hot rockabilly chicks. We believe the Thunderfucks are playing at UP at some point in the day as well.
Starting off EARLY (!) is Pixie007/SpacegirlERN’s Peek-a-boo Barbeque at Goodbye Blue Monday (next door to Friday’s Lone Wolf location). Â This show kicks off at 3PM and features 8 bands.
You might be tempted to come late to this show, but stand your usual routine on its head. Â Opening up this show are Burger Records ambassadors Cosmonauts. Â We haven’t seen these folks in the flesh yet but the records sound great and if it’s on Burger, chances are it’s awesome.
Following these California rockers are duo Luxurious Faux Furs, whose Lee Hazlewood cover is another sure fire win. Then you’ve got the Othermen– see? this is another reason to get to this show when it starts, so you’re good and sloshy when these guys take the stage. Â After that there’s a, er, hot pants contest. Â Yes, we said it. “HOT PANTS!”
By the way, we’re only half through the lineup at this point. Â Natural Born, surf rockers the Ape Hangers, modern garage band Triple Hex and LES fingerbangers the Rats follow next. Â It’s all topped off by ex-Atlanta punks the Ex Humans, fresh from tour. Sheez Louise! Â All day there’s grillin’ out on the patio and this is a FREE (!) show– just drop some bills and coinage into the hat when passed.
Whew. Â You’d think we were done, but we’re not. Â There’s still another great show that begins around 9 at Bruar Falls on Grand Street in Williamsburg. Â It’s run by the Daed Pizza girls who are presenting the Wrong Words from San Francisco along with recently-moved-to-NYC girl group The Foxx and more. Â DJing to include awesomeness and out-of-sightedness all nite as well. $7 cover for this rodeo.
See you out there!
