Hey Ya’ll? Anything interesting going on?
Lucky that we are young and debauched, for it’d be so easy to get brought down by the shit of the day, if you’re the world weary sort who wears awareness like a neck weight…And just in case you’re about to assume the coccon position, I say to you: Resist! RESIST I say. Get off the damn internet. Shut off the news. Forget the riots, the stock market, the debt ceiling, the kitchen floor, cause the REAL bottom line is that there’s hard core LIVING to be done, and it’s name is FUN and it’s right outside your door! At least THAT much we have control over, and you ain’t gonna change the world by being a sourpuss.
That said: Let me tell you where you can find your inspiration to BE:
Friday August 12th
Slither down to The Bell House tonight to catch the one and only Detroit Cobras. Motor City’s finest bring their femmed up garage doowop soulpunk swagger through the east coast for a second night in our area (having conquered Maxwell’s on Thursday) on a bill amplified in power by the presence of our very own Nippon Nightmares The Baxx SiSi’s…modernist NYC garage kids Des Roar kick off the night, which starts at 8pm with a $15 ticket charge..
YA YA YA…
The outdoor show of the weekend will of course be Sonic Youth at the Williamsburg Water Front…it’s a pricey ticket at over $30 to get in but it’s a rare chance to see one of the most important New York, let alone American, rock and roll bands of the last quarter century play all your favorite buzzy and near atonal hits under the stars, and it IS a lovely evening after all…Kurt Vile and the Violators support…get there by 6 if you got yer tickets!
British born rockabilly icon Robert Gordon returns to the states with his tight as a tiger band to play tonight at Bowery Electric, supported by the majestically savage beauty of Labretta Suede and the Motel 6. $20 to get in but SAY YOU’RE THERE FOR LABRETTA, who will almost certainly outgun him, to get in for $10…8pm doors!
Over at Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Bar Matchless is quite the trail mix of a rock and roll show, presented by the blonde bombshell of booking Lady Bree: Rockabilly by The Thunderfucks, psycho garage by Edison Rocket Train, old (and I mean old) skool NYC scumbag punk by Billy Rath’s Street Pirates and combo organ fueled garage punk by Triple Hex! $9 cover and bands are on at 9pm prompt – The Lady will stick around and DJ music till 4am in the front room, providing the perfect soundtrack for watching people make fools of themselves…
Roll up your sleeves and open your ears and go aaaaaaaaaaaaah for another dose of Perfect Prescription: this months medicine is brought to you by Britpop via Brooklyn sensations DeVries, the dark and stormy Heliotropes and the fuzz trip psych band The Last Remaining Principle…hosts and DJ’s Paul Dillon and Voidsong spin nothing but the finest psychedelia, shoegaze, kraut, space and garage rock in between bands and into the sweet night at Shea Stadium in the wild warehouse section of Bushwick BK…$7 cover with doors at 9pm…
Terrortastic garage punk trio The Hydes have returned from hibernation to wreck eardrums, playing at 10pm to kick off the 9 year anniversary of the RockEM SockEM party at Otto’s Shrunken Head! No cover, so money for tiki drinks!
Pretty hot selection of live music, no? But it’s Friday night, which means everybody is DJing everywhere:
“The Boogaloo Omnibus” Phast Phreddie presents yet another neat concept night: New Kick will be an evening of dynamic instrumental sounds taking place at Teddy’s in Williamsburg! Playing all 45′s of wildness, he’s joined by none other than Mr. Fine Wine, who’ll be arriving fresh after rocking his Downtown Soulville program on WFMU. The wild eyecandy that is Brooklyn Babydoll will be wearing as close to nothing as the law allows as she go-go’s and shimmys about the place…9pm till about 2am, with no cover!
Tonight’s edition of Shakin’ All Over at taxidermy dive Home Sweet Home finds Jonathan Toubin joined by frequent co-hort Howie Pyro for some radical punk, garage and soul spinning…naturally “PYROMANIA” is the secret “skip ahead of the line” password…$3 dollars after 11 and until 3am to get in…of course it’s FREE if you get there fore Metropolis Happy Hour, where our very own flaxen haired creep Drew Redmond will spin greasy teen beat and r&b 45′s while possibly regaling you with tales of disgust. Upon request.
At Beauty Bar Bushwick, step lively over to check out Grace of Spades bi-weekly Love So Nice, where she and partner Hahn Solo throw down roots reggae, dub, rocksteady and everything else under the banner of red yellow and green. 10pm till close, No cover, and stoopid cheap drinks…
Linda Rizzo holds court at her weekly shindig at The Ding Dong Lounge in the upper west side of Manhattan, probably the only haven in that part of the island to hear some real rock and roll! She got punk. She got psych. She got garage. She got SOUL! 10pm till “kick the bums” out hour…
Saturday August 13th
Shake out your silly’s on the early side and dive into the mad at Bowery Electric, which presents a punch in the nuts bill featuring punk goofs The Sharp Lads, Atlanta GA garage dandies The Booze and the legendary Waldos! Action starts at 8pm with a mere $8 cover…
Punk rock action in Bushwick Brooklyn! Imagine that. The bootstrap stomp of The 45 Adapters, anthemic NYC gunk by The Dirty Spiders and the hell- lady yell of The Screamin’ Rebel Angels, with DJ’s Pickabar and Dolanite spinning soul and reggae between bands and into the night…all taking place at super cool joint Lone Wolf, on Broadway under the elevated tracks, another Pixie 007 production. Kicks off around 9pm…and look at that, NO COVER, ma!
Mr. T who clearly never sleeps is back with yet ANOTHER soul spin: Jonathan Toubin presents A JAMES BROWN Dance Party! Goes like this: Jail Bait (Featuring members of A.R.E. Weapons and Voluptuous Horrors of Karen Black) kicks off the live portion of the evening at 10pm, followed by James Chance and the J.C.’s performing the greatest hits that The Godfather ever laid down on mortals, followed by Jonathan spinning tons of James Brown and other worthy hard dance soul numbers in between and after! Mr. Chance will also do a solo set around 2am, word goes. This is all happening at Zebulon from 9pm till close. $10 cover…
But wait, you can also get your soul fix on in Williamsburg for free down at The Satellite Lounge on Havemeyer when Jumpy and special guest Big Sir (Mic Lo, lead man of Strange Haze) spin non stop 60′s soul 45′s from 10pm till close for Soul-A-Go-Go!
Lastly, if you’re gonna be in the city you’re best served by checking out DJ C’Mon at Idle Hands (downstairs of 25 Ave. B btw. 2nd and 3rd streets), the bar that bills itself as a haven for “Beer, Bourbon and Rock and Roll”. She’ll be spinning retro rock, power pop, indie schlopp and everything else that makes a Saturday for no cover!
So that’s what’s going on, New York City…if we’re missing anything, post it in the comments! Enjoy your weekend!
“Summer’s Almost Gone”, so let’s all live it up these precious warm weekends as if the world is at it’s end…which shouldn’t be too hard to imagine…(whoops! Had the “nihilism lock” key on! BUTTAH FINGERS!)
