Your $3K Peacoat Can't Save You From Gravity OR The Wrath of Time

A crisp chill in the air…a leather jacket zipped just to the chin…the strappy sandal replaced with the leather boot…the switch from mojitos to bourbon…can you feel it?

FALL is IN, you mothers!

And as predictable as magical ponies leaping to their deaths from a rocky New England cliff on the blood harvest moon, rock and roll in this town is kicking into high gear for the season, with a multitude of fantastic happenings. There’s something for everyone this weekend no matter what iteration of rock, soul or sickness you’re into! Let’s waste no time and jump into this burning pile of leaves…

Friday September 16th

If it ain’t already sold out, legendary punk queens The Raincoats are performing tonight at Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Warsaw! 7:30 PM doors…who’s the opener?

It’s the return of comic book scholar / photographer of the gutter stars Nick Gazin’s party Midnite Til Death! Taking place at it’s long time home Don Pedro this is gonna be one tough motherfucking bill, with bands starting at 5pm, just in time for happy hour, creeps! From 5pm: Francis Brady – The Enthusiasts – And Here Comes the Big Black Cloud – The New Rochelles – The Jigglers – Hollywood – The Mean Jeans and headliners Liquor Store. All that mad for only $6 with sounds in between and after by Charly Himmel, spinning sick garage and punk 45′s.

A little further into Bushwick, even more gunky punk action at Brooklyn Fireproof with a firebrand bill featuring The Peacekillers, still fresh as a babe all girl all star band Habibi, LIV!DS and Foster Care. Our golden childe Drew Redmond DJ’s retardedly rare 50′s and 60′s rock and roll 45′s in between and throughout. All for $6 and starting at 9pm…

The last live music punk dive of the island of Manhattan hosts the return of jacked up garage punk band The Mess Around, who are back with a reinvigorated sense of being and inner peace. They’re on at 9pm, preceded by anthemic power punk band Girl to Gorilla and followed by The Vondelles, The Exstatics and The Jukebox Zeros. Starts at 8pm prompt and has a $7 cover…another great one presented by The Underclass Revue!

And at long last! The return of semi regular (needs more fiber) garage punk showcase Hullaballoo! It’s back with vengeance and vitriol with a killer lineup featuring (in order) ’64 sound garage kids from Philly The Eeries, the snarling howl of the newly reinvigorated Organs, the all star glam slap up the head of Pretty Quick and headliners The Jam Messengers, a  boozed up blues duo of Rob K ( formerly of early Sympathy/In the Red release-ees The Workdogs) and Uncle Butcher (of Brazilian garage beasts of Thee Butchers). Your DJ’s are our very own Shimmy and Charles Gaskins, spinning all the weird 50′s R&B and garage you can handle. This takes place a Bruar Falls, so if you have any hope of catching this nonsense make sure to get there on time, for once in your life, because of their arcane and strict “Bands must be done by Midnite” policy. $7 Cover…

Serious meeting of the mod skins tonight at Bushwick Brooklyn’s NEW home of cool under the J/M/Z tracks, Lone Wolf: visiting (from the wilds of Pittsburgh PA) sharps The Pressure play massive rocksteady tonight with Ska-Prest, The Dirty Spiders and Schweinehund! Not sure of there’s a cover or not but expect the place to get jumping around 9pm…

It’s a rare-as-sasquatch day where we post happenings going on in Brooklyn’s ugly little cousin Staten Island, but tonight those psychobilly disciples of Cthulu The Arkhams are performing there tonight along with oi punk band The Templars to celebrate Bound-For-Glory Tattoo Shop’s 2nd Anniversary. Happening over at a joint called The Full Cup on 388 Van Duzer Street…not hard to get to from the ferry, and if you’re on this site you can obviously use Google Maps…

I hear tell of an “18 to enter” show at a party space in Bushwick Brooklyn called The 659 Lounge (659 Flushing Ave, Corner of Harrison)…My pals Appa Day and Chiz Night present a party they call Rock Over Rest Oktoberfest I honestly don’t know any of the bands on the bill except the loud experimental post punk dark stars Imaginary Friends, but maybe you do (with horribly generic names like Outskirts, The Rejects, Green Hots, L Train, Exemption, M.A.D. ) - irregardless, we here at Garage Punk NYC are all about corrupting the youth so let’s let the kids get gone…$6 cover and 8pm doors!

You can Party for a Good Cause: Tonight at trapeze training ground and fabulous party space Big Sky Works is a benefit for Vic Thrill! All around musical madman and frontman for bands like The Bogmen and The Saturn Missle, he is victim to the plight of many an artist (or American in general) in these times: he got seriously injured and is weighed down with shamefully obscene medical bills. Hoping to help him out is a veritable CIRCUS atmosphere of music, performance, psychedelic visuals by BamIAmTV and a silent auction with goods kindly donated by folks like Main Drag Music, Mikey’s Hook Up and more…$25 suggested donation for a dude who’s done the same for so many others…starts at nine pm!

And now…the cavalcade of DJ parties:

It’s that Friday, Rebel Night at Otto’s Shrunken Head where DJ’s Sei, Jun and Baxx SiSi’s kids Kick and Hiromu spin the baddest 50′s rockabilly R&B twist party anywhere in this damn town! For those who don’t know this is a party for dancing, not standing around with your vodka tonic, and these Far(out) Eastern slicksters are more than happy to teach you how to dance like a greased up piranha! And watching a gang of girls in poodle skirts or rolled up jeans doing the stroll is a sight to behold, truly. 10pm – 4am with never a cover!

The one and only Boogaloo Omnibus, Phast Phreddie and Ol’ Stark present another installment of Let’s Boogaloo, where The Man drops deep, deep cuts of Latin soul, sensuous funk, and exotic French and Brazillian groovers on wax from 10pm till close at Zebulon in Williamsburg BK.  This will without a doubt be the Sexiest thing going tonight. No cover!

Leading the northern front against apathy and boredom as always on a Friday night, DJ La La Linda Rizzo cuts through the uptown grease at The Ding Dong Lounge (Columbus Ave. and West 106th Street), where she plays tough psychedelia, bratty garage, and groovadelic soul and funk from 10pm on! Dig?

We’re always happy to hear of a NEW party at a NEW venue: Thunderfucks frontman Charlie and ginger-haired trouble girl Jordan Danger will be spinning a cornucopia of vintage R&B, soul, surf rock, punk and glam at Brooklyn Stable (486 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg BK) – there’s  no cover, cheap drinks and even food till 2am, so it could be good ending on your way home from wherever you’re coming from or headed…

As if there was any doubt, Jonathan Toubin‘s Shakin’ All Over is in effect Home Sweet Home. You know he’s got all the R&B, garage rock, girl group and doo-wop on ’45 wax you need to make Friday make sense…tonight’s “skip the herd” password is “Apache”, $3 cover after 11pm and until 3…Metropolis Happy Hour warms up the corpses on the walls with Ethan Miller of Outside Eye spinning afro-beat and Caribbean groove tracks from outside your world from 8pm till 11 for no cover!

Saturday September 17th

Of course the big to-do on the minds of many is the return of D Generation at Irving Plaza, with their decendants The Biters opening up for them…as of press time tickets are still available…doors at 7pm…

Tonigth at Big Sky Works, more circus circus action: banjo two piece Peculiar Pretzelmen, powerpop monsters When Particles Collide be-masked psych band The March Fourth and Quebec group Leafer), trapeze hijinks,  psychedelic visuals (courtesy of BamIAm TV) and more big top fun…$10 cover and 9pm doors for tonight’s happening!

Les Sans Culottes, the long running purveyors of French language ye-ye inspired rock and roll, celebrate the release of their brand  new album “Pataphysical Graffiti” tonight at Park Slope Brooklyn’s Rock Shop (249 4th Avenue )! Helping to bring this sophisticated baby into the world of night are Johnny Chan and the New Dynasty Six and an oddball Montreal pop band  Malajube…Ten dollar cover, 8pm doors!

Meanwhile, a pretty solid rock and roll show at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory, with Hunx and his Punx continuing their tear through our side of the country, peforming along with boogie band Natural Child, The Beets and lo-fi disco/R&B  inspired band Making Friendz – $10 cover, 8pm doors, and another ALL AGES event to take your cool younger sibling / illegitimate child to!

A bunch of filthy, horrible hardcore punk bands are playing at Otto’s Shrunken Head tonight! Enrage thyself from 7PM on with The Dead Tricks, The Bloody Muffs, Cry Havoc! and S.M.U.T. - No cover!

DJ C’Mon continues her fight for righteous in a city that needs it on a Saturday night with her Saturday Takeover at Idle Hands on Ave. B. The place has a killer bourbon selection and the lady spins retro rock n roll, garage, punk and non sucking indie all night from 10pm till close…and I keep hearing about some fancy ass hamburgers they’ve got in this joint to soak up the poison to boot!

***************

Whew! That’s what’s waiting for you out there in the wild!

Whatever you choose I’m sure you’ll be fine as long as we all stick together (Aaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwww!)

Be Seeing You …
