Well ALRIGHT then! Another weekend of rock and soul madness is upon us, and not a minute or day too soon! I know you, rider: You’ve been back in that fall groove, that back to school move, trying to get serious and shit, but inside you, all Mr. Hyde like , you’ve been dying to strip off your stupid human mask and go ape in the streets like a teenager on love and speed! Now’s your chance:
Friday September 23rd
At Bushwick Brooklyn’s Lone Wolf, underneath ye olde elevated J/M/ZÂ tracks on Broadway, there is a 1/2/3 punch in the third eye of amazing modish pop and soul all under one moon – San Francisco transplants and Shocking Blue reminiscent soul rockers Persephonee’s Bees, the freakbeat kings of Brooklyn, The Above and ace combo organ punkers Triple Hex perform for your absoulte pleasure at a shindig put together by Pixie 007 . Bands start at 10pm in that exact order and the cover is a mere mortal $6 dollars…
Danger Divehole Local 269 hosts a night of loud punk action, courtesy of The Underclass Revue: The Beantown Boozehounds (guess what city they’re from! Come on, have a guess!), F Bombers, Dead Tricks and Al G (of The Urgencies). $7 cover, 9pm kickoff, retarded drink specials!
It’s another night for classy-ass food, drink and bad-ass music by Dj’s Tony and Cowboy Mark at gastro hang The Bedford on (where else) Bedford Avenue in the north side of Williamsburg BK. They’ll be playing 50′s and 60′s R&B, rock and roll and obscuro soul from 10pm on for no cover…
A not too far walk a bit further in that hood: It’s that time of the month, but not that kind of flow, the flow of your feet shuffling along with the other sweaty hot messes at The Commodore – Discophonic Walk is on tonight with Phast Phreddie and GirlSoul spinning fuzzed out garage rock and deep soul cuts on ’45 vinyl from 10pm till close for no cover! Eat a fried chicken thigh and work it off!
It ain’t Friday night if Jonathan Toubin and co-horts aren’t educating the bridge and tunnel on what real music is at Home Sweet Home for Shakin’ All Over Under Sidways Down! Always with the garage, psych and soul 45′s! He’s on at 11 and it’s 3 Dollars from then till 3am…I think Golden Drew is holding down Metropolis Vintage’s (THANKS FOR THE COOL BOOTS, DAD!) Happy Hour that precedes it from 8pm till 11, if I ain’t mistaken…
And for those northern Manhattan folk who crave boss sounds, I cannot recommend more heartily to check out DJ La La Linda at her weekly perch The Ding Dong Lounge, a totally classless and therefore cool as fuck dive on Columbus and 105th Street! She plays freaky psych, garage punk, soul and funk all night from 10pm till they turn on the lights at 4am and reveal your leprosy!
Saturday September 24th
I can barely REMEMBER the last time we listed anything cool going on at The Delancey, but this one is the EPITOME of cool – The Cocktail Slippers (all girl garage-y punk band from Norway) rock and roll woman Palmyra Delran and her all star band, the legendary Lenny Kaye and hard blues bandits Daddy Long Legs. Our man Jumpy DJ’s soul and garage for the whole affair on top!
If you’re out and about early, custom motorcycle builders Indian Larry are throwing a block party at their shop on Union Avenue in Williamsburg (400 Union Avenue) featuring all day bands from 5pm, with disciples of Cthulu The Arkhams kicking it off!
Check out the Cocktail Slippers performing this rather 60′s girl-pop flavored ditty while getting advice from Silvio:
Over at Don Pedro, a true punk rock all star show is at hand, with Dirty Spiders, World War IX ,Step 2 Far and Left Alive playing for keeps from 9pm on…$6 cover for this one!
Is it already the end of the month? Well hot damn! So color me suicide for Super Model Death Dive! This month’s affair at Greenpoint’s Bar Matchless features sweet songman Lou Valentine (who now has a full on band), girl gang gone bad Party Lights and the snarling fury of the heart that is LoveStruck! Between both front and back rooms you can thrill to the sounds of host and Puta Records/The Rats frontman Jake Rat and Big Sir (Strange Haze) and Miss Jilly Fiore (The Lovely)! Email smddnyc@gmail.com to get in for free if you’re a broke cheapskate or pay the $5 cover! As always, OPEN VODKA BAR from 9pm till it’s gone…Show starts at 8!
Hey MAX:
Some honky tonk/rockabilly flavored bizness going on at The Rodeo Bar (Corner of 27th Street and 3rd Ave in NYC) thanks to a visit from the amazing Deke Dickson – not sure of the cover charge but he’s on at 9pm…check him out in this clip:
Meanwhile, back at the batcave they call Otto’s Shrunken Head, Memphis Mike Mortican’s monthly massacre Thee Midnight Monster Hop is in full throttle! The man spins bad to the bone rockabilly, R&B and garage all night in the front and has curated for your live listening pleasure in the accursed Tiki room the Rhode Island based loony bluesbilly band The Headcutters and garage fiends The Skeleton Beats! 10pm and never a cover…
SHAKE!
A hop skip and jump from there on Ave. B, check out Dj C’mon! and her night of garage, powerpop and suck-free indie rock at Idle Hands they like to call The Saturday Takeover! 10pm till the bitta end!
School is IN, motherfuckers, and I mean Shoutin’ School! GaragePunkNYC founders and Hullaballoo proprietors Charles Gaskins and Shimmy will be spinning prime 50′s/early 60′s R&B dance numbers for getting out every evil ailment inside of you at Lone Wolf in Bushwick BK from 10pm till close for no cover! Not only will they be pulling newly aquired movers from their recent travels, but they’ve gone through the trouble of making FREE mix tapes of some of the tunes they’ll be rocking FOR YOU. Because they CARE that damn much!
Have a Lovely Weekend, If you Dare —- Captain Heartlock
