This is one of the first results I got when I randomly Google searched "Sexy Hobo"...I'm more appalled than aroused.
What’s up, Witches! We’ve powered through and survived yet another week in Hooverville. You deserve a cookie…or at the very least a rock and roll night out. What do you say, a little levity with your ennui?
Friday October 7th
In case you missed them when they played last month (or if you didn’t catch them on this weeks Sugar Shack-a-Go-Go), your next chance to catch “San Francisco’s reigning kings of ‘don’t give a fuck’ garage-punk” (a la their label Daggerman Records) The Outdoorsmen will be TONIGHT at Bushwick Brooklyn’s Lone Wolf for yet another Pixie 007 presented Friday night delight! They are joined by the trash-sax insanity of The Jigglers, fuzz tone power rock duo The Psyched and the children of disaster we all know as Foster Care. A whole lot of solid trash rock for a mere $7 dollars! 9pm kickoff…
Over yonder at Union Pool, will the kids know what hit them before it’s too late? Drown your id in the sonic waves of the heavy psych scene tonight with a bill headlined by mind warriors La Otracina, who are joined by metal leaning Northwest mashers Thrones and Danava, a band who will draw pleasant comparisons to the best of Blue Cheer and Sabbath. 9pm doors, $10 cover.
It’s Volume VII of Go-Go Gorilla at Otto’s Shrunken Head tonight, where hosts Kick and Hiro of The Baxx SiSi’s host a full on push the damn tables out of the way dance party, with live performance tonight by The Rats! No cover, 10pm party time excellent
If you’re in the Park Slope / Downtown Brooklyn area, why not head down to the endangered / saved(?) dive Hank’s Saloon, where the one man show stopping steel guitar wielding Brownbird Rudy Relic will perform at 9pm? No cover…No idea who else is on the bill considering the bar’s not much for updating it’s calendar, but hey, adventure!
And now: SUMMON the DISC JOCKEYS:
What better way to kick off your Friday night than by shimmying down to Manhattan’s Beauty Bar for To Sir With Love, where the lovely Crystalblu persuades you to have a joy to her wild selections of 60′s pop, garage, psych, surf and soul? She’s on from 7pm till 11pm, prime time for happy hour and getting your mind prepped for action. Free!
Grace of Spades has her monthly throwdown of soul, R&B, doo wop and dub at rock and roll bowling alley The Gutter – she goes from 10pm till close and provides the soundtrack to roll perfect!
As always on a Friday, Home Sweet Home is the place for your for your 8 hour block of guaranteed bad ass tunes – kicking off tonight with Metropolis Happy Hour from 8pm-11pm with Charly Himmel spinning her best garage and punk 45′s for happy hour (stop by Metropolis Vintage for the deals!), with Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down coming right on the heels! This week Jonathan Toubin is joined at 1am by guest DJ and Kansas City soul ’45 legend ‘Superwolf’ Jimmy Trotter! $3 dollars after 11pm and until 3am, and this weeks “skip the line herd” password is “Superwolf”…as if that ain’t all, Matt Hollywood (Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Rebel Drones) spins the good shit in the upstairs fancy cocktail lounge into the night!
DJ La La Linda keeps uptown Manhattan KOOL with her selections of wild eyed psychedelia, garage punk, soul and funk bangers at The Ding Dong Lounge, dropping retro science like hot yams from 10pm until they turn on the bright lights that say go home in Spanish. No cover!
Saturday October 8th
Tis this season of not only ghouls and ghosts, but large scale record fairs here in Gotham – get your lazy ass up early on Saturday (10am – 5pm) for the fourth annual Superstar DJ Record Fair + Independent Label Market at the Brooklyn Flea (27th North 6th Street between Kent and East River in Williamsburg BK). For there, you’ll find some of the finest independent record labels here there and everywhere hawking their wares, including our boy Charles Gaskins brainchild Killer Diller Records (home to artists like The Othermen, The Above, Twin Guns, Organs, The Jigglers, etc) amongst GREAT labels like 4AD, WEIRD, Mexican Summer, Fool’s Gold, Secretly Canadian and many more! Independent record dealers will also be on hand for all the vinyl you’re missing from your collection, you junkie! Support the scene, MAAAAAAAAN. And for you hipsters with babies, there’s gonna be an outdoor disco dance party for kids! but I don’t know nothing ’bout that. Just please do not give a three year old coke bumps.
Back to night time happenings: Here’s one addiction that’s fun for the ENTIRE family: Jumpy and Big Sir team up for Soul Habit at Williamsburg Brooklyn’s Satellite Lounge! These two throw down ’45 after ’45 of non stop rump shakers of the retro soul and R&B variety from 10pm till close for no cover at a great bar with plenty of room to shake it, great draughts on tap and old school pinball wizardry…no cover!
Creatures of the East Village, be aware of DJ C’Mon and the Saturday Takeover at Idle Hands on Avenue B, where the bourbon flows in accompaniment to this lady’s rad selection of garage, power pop and indie rock! She’s on from 10 till close with no cover.
