Have you ever walked under a ladder cradling a black cat with an open umbrella in your other hand and a dirty rabbit’s foot in your back pocket? Have you ever stepped on a crack on the sidewalk while whistling at night? Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale fluorescent lights of Target? If the answer is yes to any of these, you should smack your ass with a Ouija board and consider yourself lucky to be reading this screed on this day, this most unlucky lucky day, Friday the 13th of January of 2012.
Here’s a fun little tidbit: Including today there are THREE Friday the 13th’s in this calendar year, and they are spaced out…EXACTLY THIRTEEN WEEKS APART.
We’re a-gonna die.
What’s up this weekend, NYC?
Friday January 13th
Tonight I will be hosting a party at Bushwick underground loft space / rock temple The Church: It’s THE LUCKY 13 JOY LUCK SOIREE in which we shall celebrate pagan calendar dates and raise money to help Jonathan Toubin! My psych-punk band Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade plays with shoegaze legends Apollo Heights, the sultry swaggering Lovestruck and the great garage-punk terrors of the east, The Baxx SiSi’s. I’ll be spinning records along with the lovely DJ Glamourpuss and other sundry guests…into the night…for great victory! Party kicks off at 9pm, you know where to find it if you know…suggested donation of $5 – infinity dollars with all proceeds going to benefit the man.
A hop skip and jump away Williamsburg’s hall of iniquity, Union Pool, is a pretty sweet little rock and roll bill: You’ve got the newly reinvigorated twang punk emperors Organs! You’ve got the Cali based, sludgy psych metal band Call of the Wild! You’ve got Gentlemen! You’ve got our golden boy Drew Redmond & Eric Cecil behind the turntables spinning greasy rock stuff all night in the back room! You’ve got a taco! Not that kind of taco, pervert. $8 cover (I THINK!) and 9pm kick off time.
Drew will be arriving at Union Pool straight off his happy hour (8pm – 11pm) spin for Metropolis Happy Hour at Chinatown taxidermy dive Home Sweet Home, which preceeds Todd-o-Phonic Todd manning the decks for Shakin’ All Over from 11pm till close. Needless to say they are still raising money for Mr. Toubin so drink, DRINK I say! And DANCE, because they go so well together and you know how that goes.
The greatest rock and roll bowling alley in the country as far as I’m concerned is Asbury Lanes in majestic Asbury Park, NJ. ‘Tis a fitting place for the debut of Manitoba, the heavy supergroup fronted by the legendary Handsome Dick Manitoba of The Dictators and featuring Dean Rispler, Ross the Boss, Thunderbolt Patterson and Daniel Rey. Supporting acts Ruby the Hatchet, Composure, The Obvious and Lost in Society kick this soiree off at 7:30pm prompt. Not sure of the cover. $10?
The Dictators – America The Beautiful
Uptown Manhattan at the great dive of the north, The Ding Dong Lounge, is Lady DJ La La Linda, regaling all the freaks and rocker rejects with psych, garage, punk and soul sounds from 10pm till the bright lights that say “go the fuck home” flash on – no cover!
Back downtown: The lovely and rad CrystalBlu spins happy hour (7pm till 11pm) at her fabulous weekly spin To Sir With Love! Girls can get their nails did while grooving to max mod, garage, soul, girl group and surf sounds!
Back to Brooklyn! Phast Phreddie and Girl Soul spin “mood” music and vintage soul f and R&B at Teddy’s on the Northside of Williamsburg for a night they call Dynagroove. 9pm till 2am, no cover, and room to shimmy…
Saturday January 14th
Saturday night marks the debut of Cockpit, a new band fronted by Anna Anabolic that is a mutant permutation of the bands Quitty and the Don’ts and Party Lights. They are joined by Montreal power pop combo Kid Sentiment, garage rockers Bradley Dean and the Terminals and yet ANOTHER band making it’s debut Baby Your Baby. Watching a new band do their first show is very much like having a baby, ain’t it? It can either be beautiful or painful and oftentimes both! This all goes down at The Cakeshop on Ludlow Street in the LES. 8 o’clock doors, NO idea of the cover (expect to pay at least $8)
Here’s Kid Sentiment!
Ooooh, ANOTHER Bushwick Brooklyn rock and roll loft party! Girl garage group American Sun celebrates the release of their debut 7 inch record! They play with Naked Beach and Little Victory at 538 Johnson Street (apt. 201) … not sure of the cover. Mapquest that shit!
If a soul dance is what you’re craving tonight (and why the hell wouldn’t you be!) then you want to be at Satellite Lounge in Williamsburg for Soul a Go Go, where the man Jumpy and his special guest DJ partner Connie T. Empress regale you with non stop movers, strictly on ’45, all night long from 10pm till close! No cover, immaculate beer selection and pinball, you wizard!
Lastly, the bourbon palace of the East Village known as Idle Hands hosts weekly throwdown The Saturday Takeover, where DJ C’mon plays non stop garage, power pop, glam and happening now bands for no cover from 10pm till close!
AS ALWAYS, hit us up right here if we’ve missed anything.
Live it!
