We’ve hit one of those patches again where the action slows down a bit. Call it the post-New Years slump, or the time when everyone is sick (including myself), the fact is that many bands simply refuse to play January gigs.
Tonight’s your best bet for fun, as this is a very front-loaded weekend (we’ve got ONE confirmed gig on Saturday!)… if you head out, be sure to mainline some airborne first!
TONIGHT (FRIDAY):
Starting with the live shows, you’ve got:
Modern organ garage rockers Triple Hex share a bill with Fly Ashtray, the longtime garage/indie group, at the Rock Shop on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. $7
Cake Shop sees the return of dissonant bluesers Chicken Snake, featuring Jerry & Pauline Teel, plus the Ned Hayden Band (of Action Swingers’ fame), Luxurious Faux Furs and Avondale Airforce (members of Chrome Cranks). Skeleton Boy DJs. $8
At the Gutter, Williamsburg’s vintage bowling alley/bar/venue, local punks Schweinehund play a show with two bands we’re unfamiliar with. $5
On the DJ front:
Also at the Gutter tonight is DJ Grace of Spades, about to embark on a London trip. Check her out in the front room if you like your vinyl hot. (FREE)
Shakin’ All Over Sideways Down rolls on at Home Sweet Home, this week with fill-ins Bossy Boots, Mr Fine Wine and Mikey of Daptone records. That’s quite a trio! All proceeds go to Jonathan Toubin’s recovery fund. $5 cover.
At Otto’s Shrunken Head, it’s time for Go Go Gorilla, the monthly dance party. This month there are no bands but guest DJ ‘Administrator’ fills in. We’re also thinking Jumpy is involved here, unless he IS the administrator. FREE
SATURDAY:
The only confirmed shindig we’ve got is the aforementioned Jumpy‘s monthly garage rock DJ gig at Greenpoint’s Veronica People’s Club called Flip City. This month Boogaloo Omnibus fills in for Big Sir. FREE
Anything else? We’re desperate here! Send it in!
Stay Sickly New York!
