I can believe it’s mid way through the week, but the fact that January is almost up should drive you to alarm…as if we are being propelled into some strange mysterious place that the future really wants us to hurry up and get too…maybe it’s just me. Anyway! Psycho Babble Button OFF! Let’s worry about HOW we’re spending our precious free time as opposed to where it’s all going:
Wednesday January 18th
Tonight is yet another thrilling edition of Turtleneck, the futuristic lounge / exotica / spy-track party hosted by Xerox and Ursula 1000. They spin all that noise, and welcome live act for the back room Beninghove’s Hangmen at 11, a multi instrumental straight up 60′s soundtrack band! Check it:
Otherwise, tonight is all about DJ action for the retro rockers:
You can fine ME at the upstairs lounge of 2A (2nd Avenue and corner of Avenue A) spinning psych, garage, soul and soundtrack stuff from 10pm till late, whilst vintage movies are projected large on the wall across the street! No cover…
Mr. Fine Wine does his thing - spinning tough dancing R&B and Soul 45′s – as he has from time immemorial at Botanica on East Houston St near Mulberry. He’s on from 9pm till at least 2 in the AM and there’s never a cover…
DJ Kelley Ryan has a thing over at Chinatown luxurious dive Fontana’s called Vinyl Grime, where servings of greasy garage rock and punk will be had for consumption from 10pm on. Is this a new weekly to add to the pile? Time will tell…
Matt Hollywood spins all kinds of delectably druggy sounds at Local 138 on Ludlow Street from 10pm till late…
Don’t know who’s on deck as of writing but you can assume someone is filling in at Motor City for New York Night Train from about 10pm on…
Chuck Zilla & Maddie Ruthless fill in for a London bound Grace of Spades for reggae and dub party Watch This Sound tonight at Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Stable from 9pm till close, bredren…
Thursday January 19th
Alright, this is the kind of good news I like to hear: it’s the grand opening of a NEW rock and roll venue, and word on the street are the people in charge are doing it RIGHT. Out of the ashes (and space) of what was once Bruar Falls rises The Grand Victory! And it kicks off like a horse on steroids with liver performances by The Dead Tricks, The Threads and the mighty, mighty Born Loose! Plus a combo of some of the finest DJs in town keeping it booming all night: Michael T, Dom Rocket, our own Charles Gaskins and Eddie DC. $1 Rolling rocks all night, FREE Jameson whisky at midnight (oh God help us all), 9pm kick off…
Bushwick underground party space Shea Staudium hosts The Beyond is Beyond/Bang Bang Boogaloo Psych Compilation Release Party! For those who don’t know, Beyond is Beyond is a fantastic weekly radio show on the great East Village Radio (Thursdays at Noon, eastern time, and archived at EVR.COM) where host Mike Newman brings the city the sounds of the best psych, prog and garage bands of not only yesterday, but more importantly NOW, which is what this compilation is all about. He’ll be spinning was along with DJ Invisible Familiars (head honcho Jared of Minerva Lions, who also appear on the comp) in between and after sets by The Zabalas, Woodsman and Hopewell. Psychedelic Light Show by the one and only B.A Miale! $8 Cover, 9pm doors, ya’ll!
Lastly and always, Move Your Mule happens at Otto’s Shrunken Head, with Agent Jay and his crew spinning irie sounds, punk and ska all night for no cover.
Not a bad way to head into the weekend. No, Not at ALL.
Stay Strong, Children
