Well now, that’s more like it. Actual things, SHOWS even, to go to this January midweek.
WEDNESDAY (TONIGHT):
Tonight is Copycat‘s annual Sesame Street tribute night at Otto’s Shrunken Head. One of the most inspired and popular editions in this biweekly event, it features covers by bands especially assembled to, well, get really silly. Ursula 1000 guest DJs with host DJ Xerox and the whole thang is free. Start time: around 9PM, long after the real kiddies are in bed.
Over at Lakeside Lounge, another free gig, this time with Drug Front Records recording stars (and inveterate rock’n'rollers) the Bamboo Kids.
At Motor City tonight, Dave, Dan & Blake from Pretty Quick keep the candle burning for Jonathan Toubin by DJing his regular Wednesday spot and donating the proceeds to the man’s recovery. FREE entry.
At “Local 138″ (Ludlow that is), find Matt Hollywood of Brian Jonestown repute DJing his favorites. FREE.
Finally Mr Fine Wine holds down his own broken-in slot at Botanica where he spins the best soul & r’n'b. FREE.
THURSDAY:
THREETwo big shows tonight…
At Music Hall of Williamsburg, Ian Svenonius (of Weird War, The Make-Up, etc) puts on his own Jonathan Toubin benefit concert with his group Chain & the Gang plus 5 Dollar Priest (ex-Speedball Baby) $20 cover but you know where your cashola is going tonight.
Over at Don Pedro, the debut of a new North Carolina group, the Paint Fumes, whose debut is out in March on Slovenly Records. This bunch include the greasy haired one-man-bander Pinche Gringo aka Josh Spinn. The promo boosts them as “blasters” and I wouldn’t expect any less from a three piece with Pinche. Opening are surf/instroers Apehangers and a group called the Big Riffs. OH! and, for some reason (?) there’s a gay wedding. Yes, Josh is apparently marrying one of his bandmates. Jake Noodles, booker extraordinaire of Pedro, is officiating. Not sure on cover but this here sounds like some classic Pedro action!
Update: Over at Lulu’s in Greenpoint (corner of Greenpoint Ave & Franklin), there’s another killer show with Jersey punks Night Birds, Foster Care, the Livids and more and it’s FREE!
Back in the city, Move Your Mule skanks on to the sounds of reggae & ska at Otto’s Shrunken Head. FREE
This here Jan-you-airy is shapin’ up better than we thought!
