That’s right– your favorite weather is in the forecast for this weekend– the wintry mix. It’s taken a while, but we might actually get a Winter this year.
Thankfully, that hasn’t stopped the rock one bit and we’ve got several good shows to plunk down a few bits for this weekend.
TONIGHT (FRIDAY):
DJ CrystalBlu spins at Beauty Bar‘s happy hour for the just-off-work-and-ready-to-cut-loose crowd. 7-11 FREE
At 9, options explode:
New Jersey’s “loser” garage rock kings the Ribeye Brothers open a show at Bowery Electric. They’re a rare sighting east of the Hudson these days. $?
At Lulu’s in upper Greenpoint, the bashing punkers the Nubians of Montreal headline a bill with our own Jigglers and Enthusiasts. This is the show of the night for sure. Hurray for loud, fuzzy, cheap beer-fueled nonsense! FREE
Phast Phreddie, Ol’ Stark and Lupe Loop team up to present Let’s Boogaloo, a night of fuzz-drenched and wah-wah infused movers at Williamsburg’s Zebulon. FREE
Over at Otto’s on 14th street, DJ Drew Redmond turns Japanese (at least I think so) at Rebel Night, spinning his best rockin’ R’n'B. FREE
DJs Ursula 1000 and Mick Marsh Someone (Styles?) have got Jonathan Toubin’s rockin’ soul slot at Home Sweet Home,! (chime in please if you do). $5, proceeds to JT’s recovery fund.
SATURDAY:
The Hot Stiffs, recently relocated to NYC from Bloomington, IN, play a show at Lit Lounge near the 3rd Avenue L train. Their sound strikes me as somewhere in the LoveStruck / Laura Rebel Angel vicinity. $?
At Union Pool, Habibi headline a show with glammers the Foxx, Daytona (with Jose of Harlem repute) and a band unknown to us, Yellow Dogs. Only $5.
Zebulon‘s got another good one tonight: The Mighty Fine call a do-over on their record release party. They’ve got the Slackers’ horn section and Mick Collins DJing. Now that’s a party. Updated: FREE!
Back in the city, DJ C’Mon tries to stave off a tidal wave of douchebaggery in Alphabet City at her (usually weekly) Saturday Takeover night at Idle Hands on Avenue B. Expect power pop and real good retro rock. FREE
