Is That a Fountain Pen In Your Pocket or Are You Just Glad It’s The Weekend?

A little bit you, a little bit me, a lot of smoke

Happy Weekend, children! Looky Look: the month is up, the weather is apocalpytically warm, and you are jonesing for trouble! Here’s where that’s at:

Friday February 24th

The clear pick for live show of the night is at the one true mecca of rock and roll in Bushwick (and only place I know that serves whisky AND fried balls of maccaroni and cheese YUM), DON PEDRO, an UNSTOPPABLE bill with four of this town’s greatest now bands: Organs, The Jigglers, The Baxx SiSi’s and Daddy Long Legs. Fucking A! The loudest ginger chick in town Charly spins sick punk and garage records between and after bands, with go-go keytar controlled light show by multi-media darling B.A Miale, fresh off her Bruise Cruise bruising. All the bands in order mentioned, 9pm start and a meek $5 dollar cover….

Last Friday of the month (already?) means it’s time to get GONE for REAL GONE at Otto’s Shrunken Head: tonight’s edition is a straight up invasion of Philly based garage psych greats,  featuring live performances in the accursed tiki room by St. James and the Apostles (10pm), the near legendary Improbables (11pm)! Headlining act for the night is the debut of brand spanking new group Cheap Vibes, which counts Steve from The Victims and Mr. Jim from The Misfits as members! Hot! As always, hosts and DJ’s KittyBeat and Dr. Jones spin psych, garage, soul and vintage rock and roll all night long in the front room! No cover for none of this mess…

Do you like blow up dolls? How about blow up dolls with an unnatural number (for a human) of tits? Do you like sex manikins? Do you like sex manikins with rock and roll juice on the side? OF COURSE YOU DO, creepazoid! Tonight is the debut of new monthly party Finger Lickin’ Fridays! Mah boi Charles Gaskins and Drew Redmond present not just another DJ spin, but a party like no other lover – in their own words: “We’ve got a piñata full of candy and weird shirt, sex dolls(including a three-breasted alien and a sheep), a bunch of Mardi Gras beads, a very ethnic piece of cardboard, projections of naked women and little kids and muscle men on the wall, and a bunch of records!” Well dig on that! Surf, garage and skanky R&B vinyl ALL night at Grand Victory (former site of Bruar Falls and Lucky Cat before it), from 10pm till close!

My man The Appa-Rition has a weekly, fucked up punk rock party called Thought Corruption that goes down in the badlands of Bushwick at a place called The Kicking Corpse (55-21 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, N.Y, 11378, L Train Jefferson Stop). You probably have never heard of these very young and unknown bands but hey, they probably never heard of you: Outskirts, Impatient Twitch, Osifer, Stereo Space, Endogeny and Black Doctor Jr perform at this weird ass dive that promises $3 dollar beers, has a stripper cage and sells smokes (smoking is BAD, kids!) – starts at 6 and goes late…

If you’re in the city and wanna kick it off early, no better place than Beauty Bar on 14th and 3rd for the lovely CrystalBlu and her weekly mashup of girl group/garage/surf/psych records, To Sir With Love! She’s on from 7pm till 11pm, leaving you plenty of time to get your nails did and get mildly plastered before the real night starts…

Chinatown taxidermy dive Home Sweet Home is the place for the one two punch of Metropolis Vintage Happy Hour (8pm – 11pm) and Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down, with the none other than Mr. Fine Wine and sweet and deadly Leah Lugosi from The Nouvellas throwing down blazing 60′s soul and R&B ass shaking ’45s from 11pm till close! $3 after midnight, and yes, still raising money for Mr. Miracle, Jonathan Toubin!

A lil’ farther north, Upper Westside of Manhattan to be precise, you’ll find Lady La La Linda laying down funk grooves, garage punk, mind blowing psych and filthy rich soul at one of the last dives in that part of town The Ding Dong Lounge from 10pm till close…absolutely free for all the kids and a sure bet!

Saturday February 25th

FIRST AND FOREMOST, I simply MUST shout out birthday girl and supporter of all things groovy Miss Terre T of The Cherry Blossom Clinic, which airs THEE HOT SHIT every Saturday afternoon from 3-6 on freeform radio station of the nation WFMU. It’s their pledge drive so everyone should GIVE HER SHOW SOME MONEYS because this station is the LAST bastion of real music on the airwaves. It is ESSENTIAL that this radio station survives, and you look like a fool to NOT support them while complaining about how much music sucks now and there’s never anything on the radio – these people present the full spectrum of everything cool from yesterday to the music you will be talking about on the NME message boards tomorrow. You know you love life and rock and roll, so DO IT.

DJ C’mon has her Saturday night stomp down, The Saturday Takeover at East Village whisky hang Idle Hands, where the bourbon selection is unmatched and the lady spins sweet garage, punk, and power pop nonsense all night from 10pm on…never a cover!

And…is that really it for Saturday????

Help me out people. I know there’s some relevant show or hang that we MUST be missing. POST A COMMENT below so people know!

Whatever, Carpe Diem!

-Captain Heartlock!
