Whatta great time last Friday night: I hit the Natural Child/Habibi show at Cake Shop, which was sold out by 10:30.
I’ll admit– it’s been a while since I’ve actually been at the Cake Shop. Manhattan is less and less my kind of scene, but this place is still cool. Anyway, I digress– the point is that I couldn’t even get close enough to SEE Habibi. Instead I settled for the monitor above the bar.

Yeah, like I was at Madison Square Garden. They were great (well, sonically at least!)
I had never seen Natural Child, but I loved the Turbo Fruits (and booked them a couple of times back in 2009)– and their former drummer and bassist are in this band, who are also based in Nashville.
So I pushed my way to the front, actually the side, of the stage. Â I was pretty blown away by the live action these guys lay down– their records aren’t half as bombastic as their stage presence.
It didn’t hurt that they had 50 people who knew all the lyrics to gems such as ‘Crack Mountain’, which is less Black Lipsey than it sounds, in the audience.
At some point a certain local character made his way up front and handed around some refreshments on stage…
And they covered ‘Born to Be Wild’ – yeah, THAT song.
And encored. twice.
If you want some ridiculous fun, check out these guys next time they hit town!
