You’ve survived another week of civilization and Mother Nature trying to kill you, so what better way to celebrate than give your first born to the gods of the new flesh?
The heat’s taking a break on the streets, so with pleasant temps the children can play:
Friday July 27th
Let’s kick it off right with King Khan and the Shrines, performing tonight at Bowery Ballroom…as of writing there are still $15 tickets available online…go ahead and click…8pm doors
Parkside Lounge is your place for night one of Cavestomp! action, with another semi-Headless Horesemen reunion via Chris Such and his Savages, headlining a bill that is preceeded by the mighty Philly Vox Combo Soul gang The GTV s and St. Louis fuzz freaks The Nevermores…8pm doors, $8 cover…
Over in industrial Bushwick, Shea Stadium is where you’ll find the atomic wildlings The Nuclears! They headline at midnight (approximately) and always bring it…not to hot on the opening acts but I think you’ll enjoy the dark sounding bubble gum girl-pop group Starlight Girls (11pm) who precede The Nuclears…$8 cover!
It’s that time of the month: Time to freak out about rent and time for REAL GONE at Otto’s Shrunken Head…the creme deluxe musical act tonight are the paisley loud mod-sters The London Egg, who hit the stage at 11pm for your pleasure! A sight and sound to behold…as always KittyBeat, Dr. Jones and their special guests whip the last Friday into a frenzy, spinning psych, garage punk and soul in the front room from 10pm till close…no cover!
Of course if it’s Friday it means there’s a thousand DJ parties…well that’s exaggeration. Here’s all the ones worth it to you:
Home Sweet Home hosts Metropolis Vintage Happy Hour with our favorite dance maniac soul DJ / Detective Novelist Jumpy starting things off this week, free from 8pm till 11 with two for one drinks if you talk to the man! Then Shakin All Over Under Sideways Down with Jonathan Toubin and his special guest DJ Ian Svenonius shake the LES down to the ground from 11pm till close!
La La Linda brings psych, garage, freakbeat funk and soul to uptown dive The Ding Dong Lounge for her weekly ode to joy…10pm till close, no cover, with mind meld light show projections by VJ Linear Progression!
Phast Phreddie and GirlSoul present another edition of The Discophonic Walk at greasy in more ways than one party joint The Commodore in Williamsburg! Dropping boss garage, soul, funk and freak out dance 45′s all night long, along with special guest DJ Mikey Post! No cover, 11pm blast off…
Saturday July 28th
It’s the third? fourth? Something? Anyway…it’s the annual Bushwick Block Party, taking place on the streets surrounding Roberta’s in Bushwick Brooklyn, naturally…it’s a clusterfuck of food, amusements (what’s this I’m hearing about a steel cage wrestling match??? and a freakin’ Bikini contest???), and local freakazoids and also oh yeah some live music: acts of interest to our readers are The Wild Yaks and Natural Child, with Andrew W.K. headlining, on one of two stages outdoors. I can’t really find any kind of definitive scheduling but hey, eat a hot dog and live! 11am till midnight!
One of the best spots in Bushwick for rock, Lone Wolf, has got a doozy on it’s hands in the form of one man blues wrecker Brownbird Rudy Relic, The Rats, Labretta Suede and the Motel 6 and Detroit Rock City’s Olympus Mons, a really rough and sleazy sounding band that sounds exactly like where they come from. DJ Elevator Operator rocks garage records between bands and into the inglorious night…9pm doors, $8 dollars!
You can do Thee Midnight Monster Hop! I know you can! DJ’s Mike Decay and Trash Only spin everything from psychobilly to garage punk to trash rock to outlawed R&B 45′s all night long from 10pm till the breaking point at Otto’s Shrunken Head…they’re joined by guest DJ Greg ‘ZorchSurfer’ Pacheco and live act in the back tiki room, rockabilly newbies The Bloodshots at 11pm. No cover!
Night two of you Cavestomp! weekender at Parkside Lounge! The night kicks off with Montreal psych punk band Melted Faces at 8pm, followed Metalleg, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and legendary garage revivalists The Original Sins! Same deal, dad: 8pm doors, $8 cover
Let’s Boogaloo at Zebulon in Williamsburg is your one stop shop for groovadelic international sounds, hosted and spun by DJ’s Ol’ Stark and his guests DJ Too Much (Eat Records-EVR) and UK DJ Voice of Terror! 10pm, no cover! Summer style!
Meanwhile, Another Scorcher returns to Last Exit in Cobble Hill, BK! Miss Gemini & Ursa Major are joined by guests Upsetter FC and SPQR’s own Commander Straker, dropping unassailable 60′s dub reggae sounds all night from 1opm on, a special night in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence! No cover!
DJ C’Mon brings rock and roll sounds to the East Village’s Idle Hands with her weekly, The Saturday Takeover! Garage, punk and power pop soundtracks to watch the city wretch to all night from 10pm till 4, with nary a cover!
Alright, I’m out. See you in August, Lovers
