In The Heat of the Morning

What’s up, crab cakes?

Another weekend in the broiler in NYC…yes Virginia, it’s hot as Satan’s crib. But we can take it, yes we can…we’ll grill tilapia on the sun stained hood of a Trans-Am and charge you $8 for it…we’ll make up reasons to put any kind of booze into ice cream shakes…we’ll do the twist in the jet spray of a open fire hydrant while distraught neighborhood children watch and call it a shower, cause we were built for this, with our (relatively for apes) hairless bodies, our lust for the feast, and our rock and roll attitudes!

This weekend we got in front of us is not nearly as sleepy as I would have assumed – usually after 4th of July insanity the town quiets down for a week…chiefly there’s a whole lot of CBGB Festival junk going on, some of which is cool ,  some of it best forgotten (like the last years of the club’s booking practices, HARDEE HAR HAR, JOKES!) – so put an ice cube in your fanny pack and dig:

Friday July 6th

The saxophone trash punk fury that is The Jigglers will be performing tonight at The Bell House as part of the aforementioned CBGB Festival – this is a big coming out for a bunch of silly freaks from the underground, as they open the show for seminal NYC post punks Radio 4 and the headlining experimental musician and alt comedy heavy Reggie Watts. Tickets are $25 for this one, probably cheaper here online than if you try to get it at the door, I reckon…7pm doors!

More CBGB’s Fest madness at Hanks Saloon, with tonight’s punko lineup featuring Runny, 10 Cent Fuck Flicks, The Archive, Man’s Gin, and Vegas based  Surf Punk / Vegas Grind powerhouses Thee Swank Bastards…

A band that SHOULD be part of the CBGB’s fest – just by virtue that they played there seventy thousand times – will be headlining tonight at Grand Victory in Williamsburg, none other than the legendary 80′s punk forefathers Reagan Youth. They should hit at 11pm and are supported by Empty Vessels, Lords of Death, Geek Skull and Death Angel. 7pm doors, $10 cover…

Even New York Night Train is getting in on the CB’s action: they’re contribution to the fest is a bill featuring TV BABY (ex members of noise punks A.R.E. Weapons), the heavy fuzzed blues of Endless Boogie and a reunited and revived Vietnam. Jonathan Toubin spins in between bands before heading to his night at Home Sweet Home, the official afterparty for this event. This goes down on the Lower East Side at The Box (189 Chrystie Street) and kicks off at 8pm. Advance tickets are $15 (available HERE) but I have no idea if it’s more at the door.

DJ parties with cool music for cool people trying to stay cool:

Grace of Spades brings her positive vibrations to Park Slope / Gowanus  Brooklyn for a happening at Skylark (477 5th Avenue) for a tasty thing called The Friday Night Fish Fry! She, DJ Rata and special guests drop R&B, soul, funk, garage and boogaloo vinyl hotness on a hot night at a cool joint that promises good food to accompany good booze (come on, a shot and drink combo named Captain and Tenille? I don’t ever want to be right) and pinball…9pm till close, no cover

La La Linda is back at uptown dive of kings The Ding Dong Lounge, dropping all sorts of sultry psych, garage, punk, funk and soul from 10pm till close, for no cover, with psychedelic visuals flashing on you!

My man Tony (who you can usually find at his country and 50′s R&B spin on Monday nights at Union Pool) is the one starting the fun at Home Sweet Home, as he’ll be spinning for Metropolis Happy Hour from 8pm till 11pm…it’s free till 11 and two for one drinks are to be had, son! Stick around for Shakin’ All Over from 11pm till the end, where Howie Pyro holds it down until Jonathan gets back from the earlier mentioned shindig…

Saturday July 7th

And more CBGB Festival shit goes down tonight: this one may very well be sold out by the looks of things as even the ticketweb link ain’t working: Bowery Electric is where you will find the mighty D Generation, headlining an affair with The Bamboo Kids, Brass Knuckle Enthusiasts and Romans. 7pm, $25 entrance, IF they can still let people in at the door…

It’s Halloween in July! This month’s edition of Glamdammit at Grand Victory celebrates the music, life, and crazy of The Cramps…there will be trivia, a twist contest, free scoops of Goo Goo Muck on sugar cones (I’m making that one up), liver performances by power house groups The Nuclears and Violent Saturday plus a live tribute to Luxx and company by FlameJob. Free PBR from 11 to 12, alright!? All this for a pithy $5 bucks! 10pm doors…

First Saturday of the month also means the ONLY pure surf rock party in town, Unsteady Freddies Surf Rock Shindig! 9pm till close at it’s natural habitat Otto’s Shrunken Head, with surf music spun by Freddie and friends in front and live surf in the back tiki room by 9th Wave, Mister Neutron, Thee Swank Bastards and The WrayCyclers…no cover, Kahuna!

More CBGB’s FEST punk hijinks continue at Park Slope’s Hank’s Saloon, night two: I don’t know these bands but I can’t imagine it’s anything less than the filth it sounds like with names like The Whores, Brunch of the Living Dead, Devil’s Broadcast and Mongrel Bitch. Take THAT, Park Slope…

I am trying to confirm at this time, but I BELIEVE Jumpy and Big Sir will be spinning soul and R&B dance 45′s after 1am at Grand Victory…

And of course DJ C’Mon has the rock and roll the East Village sorely is lacking these days on a Saturday with her Saturday Takeover at Idle Hands! Grab a whiskey and dance defiantly to her punk, garage and power pop selections, yeah?

That’s what I’ve got for you…if we’re missing anything or got any info wrong, we are oh so human and can dig it: Just leave a comment and we’ll make additions or corrections at will…

Be Good, Stay Hydrated (a water between every drink!) and Stay Cool, Dad-E-O…
