Another August, another set of maximum rock’n'roll weekends.
Too bad so many of you are at the beach, camping, or hiding out in the AC. Â Now is the time when some of the greatest bands in the world, freed from work obligations for a time during the Summer, make their way to NYC to knock you down with blasts of fury while local bands are at their free-est and most fun.
Just try to choose between the many possibilites this weekend…
TONIGHT (FRIDAY):
Kick it all off early with a set by Montreal’s garage rock groop Lightbulb Alley for happy hour at Arlene’s Grocery in the LES. $5
Then melt your way over to Home Sweet Home on Chrystie at 8PM where our own cow-pie doll Drew Redmond will be stinkin’ up the joint with mouth-watering slabs of 60′s r’n'b and garage. FREE and possibly 2 for 1 if you bug Drew for kew-ponz.
At 8 (or 9?), it’s time once again to celebrate the birthday of the once-and-again-current booker of Don Pedro, the sultan of nude, Mr. Jake ‘Noodles’ Winn. Â Scheduled to rock this night at ‘Death Cult HQ North America’ are a collection of ponks including Jake’s own Baddasseries, Dino’s Boys, Fucking Bullshit, 60′s cover bunch the Psycho Hippies and Surfing, an out-of-town mob hailed by several folks whose taste I trust. $5 for this, DJs and god knows what else!
Back in the city, it’s another Cavestomp at the Parkside Lounge, tonight featuring the Evil Eyes, the Jay Vons and the Recordettes. $5?
At Motor City Bar, find BamaLama/Dos Platos Mike on the turntables and Anna Copa Cabanna on the stationary tables for a joint they’re calling ‘Motor City Meltdown’ (hopefully not literally). FREE
Finally, returning to Home Sweet Home, you’ll find Mick Collins of the Dirtbombs & Gories joining Jonathan Toubin on the decks from 11PM on. $3 or $5? Find out at the door.
SATURDAY:
This one’s even harder. Lots of getdown around town. Hop a car service or two!
I’m going to selfishly begin with my own throwdown (big surprise). Â Hullabaloo! presents our first show at XPO 929, the formerly old school party space on Broadway off the Myrtle JMZ. Â While “Party Expo” has changed its ways (some), we haven’t– we’ve got an all-kill-no-fill bill of young punk rockers, topped by the beat punks Eeries from Philadelphia (soon to have their very own Burger tape release and LP on Evil Weevil). Â They’re supported by two totally rawesome Virginia bands: the Eurotics, whose drummer actually plays in the nude (someone dig up Bob Markley, fast!) and the Nervous Ticks, who are sporting a new release of their punk rocking sound on fashionable magnetic tape. Â
But that wasn’t enough, so we added local howlin’ rockers Organs and, yes, Norwegian bluegrass punks Flea Market. Â All this plus a pair of Leos (myself and Charles) and guest DJ Craig Bolton of the 45 Adapters on the turntables all night. $7!
Over at the Flat on the South Side of Williamsburg, it’s the release of for the third issue of Humanbeing Lawnmower, Avi Spivak‘s great rock’n'roll zine. Â It’s a long time coming and the bar band rockers the Piggies will celebrate along with DJs including Josh Styles and Billy Miller of Norton Records. FREE!

Yeesh. It goes on and on. Â Next up, it’s the return of the Murder Junkies, yes THOSE murder junkies, sans GG. Â Is it worth it? Even if it isn’t, you’ve got Livids, Blackout Shoppers and more in support. Â In fact, the 7 bands tonight will probably remind you more of CB’s than any cheesy festival can. $10 at the door at Hank’s Saloon on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Â Doors at 8?
Woops, not done yet.  At Don Pedro, Fancy!-endorsed punks the Little Seizures play a show with Lightbulb Alley, the Recordettes and the Connection. Anna and Tony DJ… $5 ?
In DJ news, it’s Phast Phreddie and Mr Vacation squeezed into the Commodore, spinning the best danceable soul & rock’n'roll all night (FREE) and Jumpy and Big Sir spin at Grand Victory for the free shindig Soul-A-Go-Go.
YAAAAAAARGHHHH! Enough already. Just get out there and dance, varmint!
