Thursday  June 20th

The modern day Delta style shamans Daddy Long Legs headline tonight at Williamsburg’s Cameo Gallery with Mystery Lights and Spain’s amazing Guadalupe Plata…Check out “Milana“, a great raw rocker accompanying my new favorite music video:

Tonight you also get the chance to drink for a cause (as opposed to your usual excuses)! And none better than benefitting the saviors of the airwaves, free form station of the nation WFMU! A whole bevy of DJ’s from the station – Gaylord Fields, Michael Shelley, Rex, Mr. Fine Wine, Todd-a-Phonic Todd, Joe Belock, and Matt Fiveash – will be there for a live broadcast, listener meet up, and all around night of fun at Williamsburg’s video game booze hall Barcade! Who’s gonna get the high score on Arkanoid? Proceeds from specific beers (ask yer server) go towards the station…7pm til midnight, and free!

And only a couple of blocks away Andy Maltz is spinning rock and roll records at Union Pool for the early DJ shift from 8pm till 11pm…also no cover…

I’ll mention the Man or Astro-Man and Jaccuzi Boys show just to be a completist, even though it’s completely sold out. But hey, Craigslist! And there’s ALWAYS somebody out front who wants to unload their tickets if you get toMercury Lounge early enough…show starts at 9pm…

Saturday June 15th

The legendary Zombies return to New York City to perform at Central Park’s Summerstage! And they’ve still got everything that made them great going for them, from the heartbreaking vocals of Colin Blunstone to the baroque freakbeat flourishes of Rod Argent, one of few acts from the 60′s reunion tours that don’t make you feel sad and cheated because they’ve still got it…opening for them is a very strange band from the UK called Django Django that mixes 60′s pop influences with weird synths, odd costumes and an acid mind who are apparently well known for putting on some wild shows at home…pray it doesn’t rain…3pm, and FREE!

I’m going to do my best to withhold my slightly vitriolic and highly conflicted feelings for corporate fuck-festivals  such as CMJ, SXSW and the ongoing Northside Festival of Williamsburg Brooklyn that started Thursday night, only because I like Juniper Rising so much! How can you resist that delightfully crafted and sometimes sinister surf rock and spaghetti western sound? They’re playing at 2pm prompt, outdoors at (ugh) The Doc Martens Stage,  otherwise known as the triangle between North 3rd Street and Metropolitan Avenue. The Burger Records cassette mixtape stars are first amongst acts including Caged Animals, Coastgaard  and The Denzels…Free, of course, and I hear there will be barbecue and that you can drink the sponsored beer without get maced by the 5-0…

Also part of the North Side festival and definitely happening is a big blast at Brooklyn Bowl, for it’s a special edition of The Soul Clap Dance Off! Before the ultimate dance competition even gets started tonight there will be live and raw performances by Daddy Long Legs and The Gories! Doors open at 6:30, 9pm start and $12 for the live show, $7 for just the dance party after midnight…as always there’s $100 cash for the cat with the best moves and a Metropolis Vintage gift certificate for the runner up…ARE YOU SOUL ENOUGH?

Bushwick dive The Cobra Club is a baby! It’s celebrating it’s first year of operation tonight with live performances by the psychobilly terrors The Spastiks and rad greasers Shiro and the Raw Dogs…live, free, and trouble…9pm!

Speaking of anniversaries: It’s the 5 year for Dig Deeper, a party that keeps classic soul alive like no other by bringing the greats to our city to perform for audiences of today! This month Dig Deeper hosts John Ellison, who wrote and performed with the Soul Brothers Six and wrote the hit “Some Kind of Wonderful”…as always DJ Honky and Mr. Robinson keep it going on with soul selections on ’45 between and after sets! At Park Slope’s classy Littlefield, with doors at 9pm… tickets are $20 at the door or $15 if you get them in advance at this link over here!

Friday June 7th

So! The Oblivians outdoor show at the South Street Seaport with Ex-Cult at Pier 17  has been moved a few blocks over to Beekman Beer Garden (89 South Street) due to the rain storm…that’s the latest word, but I’d keep myself updated throughout the day because they’ve cancelled shows at THAT venue due to rain in the past as well! We shall see.  But maybe this one is too big to fail! Tonight at 7pm…

Across the river in Gowanus Brooklyn, catch another group of garage heavies of legendary status, as The A Bones join  Bostons classic band The Remains at The Bell House! Tickets still available for this one here – $25 in advance, 7:30 doors…

And now for the new wave, the underground, at that most underground of joints Death By Audio courtesy of Burger Records and the obnoxiously sunny state of California: garage party monsters The Lovely Bad Things perform with the power punk leaning Wyatt Blair this very evening – I don’t have exact info but I’m guessing the doors are at 9, and expecting the cover to be at least $10 smackers…should be solid:

Jonathan Toubin returns triumphantly from Old World to his party at Home Sweet Home we know as Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down, spinning all night soul, R&B and garage movers for the masses from 11pm till the very end…tonight will be the official afterparty for the Oblivian’s show mentioned above, with Greg Cartwright joining JT on turntable troubles! Free if you get in before 11, $5 after and until 3am…

This month’s Dynagroove has switched it up to the first Friday of the month (it’s usually on the second!), with Phast Phreddie joined by Mexico City’s DJ Tropicaza for a night of swinging exotica, Latin beat and boogaloo and 60′s Go-Go sounds after midnight!  This is free as always at the happening and delicious Teddy’s in Williamsburg from 9pm till about 2am…

According to our calendar it’s the monthly Spinning Wheels 60′s Soul Party at a loft in Gowanus BK located at 300 Douglass Street btw. 4th and 5th Avenues with DJ Ben the Beyonder…9pm and $5 donation…I can’t really find any information about this to confirm that it’s still happening on a monthly basis or not, so if the DJ or party regulars would be so kind let us know!

And so it goes, the countdown to the final days of Motor City continue this evening with The Motor City 45 Flip Off by Dos Platos & Lynne K, who will be throwing down 60s soul, r&b, and garage on those greasy Stanton wheels from 10pm till close, with go go action by the incomparable Anna Copa Cabana (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LADY!!!!!!!!!) and superstar ladies Jukebox Jodi and Bridgette B. serving liquid joy…no cover !

Proving that there’s no escaping the rock, even all the way up in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, you can always find La La Linda providing the soundtrack for trouble – soul, funk, psych and punk – from 10pm till close at The Ding Dong Lounge, the kind of place that is going the way of the dodo bird in this cursed town…she’s joined by Linear Progression projecting the contents of your mind…no cover…

Saturday June 8th

I don’t care how dreary it is, day drinking is the king shit of Saturday: if you’re in the slopey side of Brooklyn you must head on over for a long happy hour at Skylark, where Grace of Spades and Bad News Blair will regale whoever will listen with hours of 60′s soul and R&B from 3pm till 9pm…no cover! Drink deals, food, pinball, and the TUNES, what else you want?

Mighty Fine, who I must say killed it last week at Bushwick Open Studios Music Fest, continue their tear tonight at Bowery Electric, playing at 9pm SHARP…$8 cover…

It’s the annual edition of the scum punk festival Welcome To Our Nightmare VIII at Don Pedro tonight! A whole bunch of raw skeeziness by Skum City, The Racitomes, The Will, The Lost Riots, Jones Crusher and 60/40, with artwork – by names such as “Our Lady of Perpetual PMS” and “Horror Boobs” – , crafts, merch and more for your perusal…starting at 8pm for just $7 dollars…

It’s time again for Soul A Go Go, with Jumpy and his guest, DJ Lupe Loop (Kathleen from Discovery) spinning fast 60′s R&B and Soul for dancing after the bands are done at Grand Victory from 11pm till close…no cover!

Yet another reason to return to Bowery Electric tonight: a bill featuring The Dictators (Manitoba, rechristened) The Fleshtones, Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman and Livids, with Tony LoFi DJing between and after bands – can’t lose with this one…it’s LOOKING like this one is sold out, at least online, but you can try your luck at the door…

Over at Manhattan’s Beauty Bar of 14th Street and thoid avenue, yours truly joins forces with Ursula 1000 and Xerox for TURTLENECK: A Retro Futuristic Playground ! It’s been six months since the last one and that was a sexy little mess of a dance party if there ever was…yet again, we’ll be spinning mod, psychedelia, exotica, spy soundtracks, space lounge, soul stompers and more to move the asses of the masses! With go go action by Honeybunny Moneypenny and 60′s exploitation flicks on the screen…10pm till close, no cover!

Further east, it’s Thursday night’s dub delight, Move Your Mule, at Otto’s Shrunken Head with Agent Jay, Rata and guests, 10pm till close, no cover…

If you wanna get a head start on wrecking yourself you can’t do worse than heading to The Flat in the southside of Williamsburg BK for Angry Hour, with members of Bradley Dean and the Terminals spinning punk, garage and other oddities on wax from 6pm till 10pm…angry hour prices on the  giggle juice too…

DJ InBetween will be spinning all manner of vinyl goodness for happy hour at Heathers in the East Village from 7pm till I’m guessing 11…the man is full of surprises, if you’re lucky he’ll drop some late 60′s freaked out Turkish funk on ya!

The choice live show of the night is at Mercury Lounge where for a full on psych out courtesy of Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade, Twin Guns and The Living Kills! Kicking off (in that order) at 10:30, $10 cover…

Down the block at Motor City we are celebrating the last five weeks of that trashy place’s storied existence: Jukebox Jodi and her guest DJ Stack Aly (San Diego) play some prime rock and roll and R&B wax…as ever, Anna Copa Cabana is your go go girl for justice … no cover, 10pm till close

Union Pool tonight gets shaken to it’s taco and sex flavored core, with the psycho wildness of Born Loose headlining a bill featuring The Snails (via Baltimore, features members of Future Islands) and the resurgent psych rockers Birds of Avalon…first band should be on at 9pm timely, not sure of the cover but imagine between $8 and $10…

Tonight at underground party loft The Swamp (somewhere off the Montrose L train, for those who know) it’s Dirty Reggae Party XXI with a bunch of ska and rocksteady bands – The Far East, B-Side Basterds, Roots of Natural Sound and The Pandemics - and the selector crew Shockwave Sound on the decks for a night of positive vibrations…8pm doors, $7 cover…

On the other side of Brooklyn, Jamaica 60′s  Soul, Dub and classic Dancehall can be heard at the monthly burner Another Scorcher courtesy of Ursa Major and Miss Gemini at Atlantic Avenue’s last bastion of cool Last Exit…10pm till close, no cover!

Over at Otto’s Shrunken Head it’s Thee Midnite Monster Hop! DJ’s Mike Decay and Mike Mortician spin trash, psychobilly and garage gunk all night in the front room and welcome North Carolina soul siren Nikki Hill to the tiki room, where she will be performing two sets starting at 10pm! The Hop starts at 9pm and is as ever, no cover!

Dos Platos de Bama Lama Mike and Mr. Robinson play retro soul and R&B at Heathers in the East Village tonight from 8 till midnight. I THINK! I’m really not sure if this still happens (anyone wanna confirm) but it shows up on our calendar every month, so if I’m wrong don’t sue me…

The aforementioned Los Jamones close out their city tour with a performance at Grand Victory with Runny, The Mess Around and The Staggs…8pm doors and I’m GUESSING an $8 cover, with Tony LoFi between bands…

Huge Cavestomp show tonight at Grand Victory featuring some of the true heavyweights of the modern scene: starting off at 9pm with the girl-pop duo Satin Kittens, followed by The Jay Vons, The Lyres, The Woggles and Thee Mighty Fevers from Japan doing a late night set… Hip! Once again Tony LoFi and Anna Anabolic DJ between and after bands…$12 cover…

It’s time for your monthly taste sensation, for your ears, Le Crunch! Josh Styles and Sophie Thunder spin the finest glitter rock and 50′s bop from 9pm till the end of the night, joined by guest Dave Ready of Sorceress! With live performances by New York City’s own Mr. Showbiz himself Breedlove and the twang and roll of Alana Amram! Only a $5 buck cover for all that sparkles…

Wednesday April 17th

For once, most of the action is pretty Manhattan-centric! EAT IT, Williamsburg-wick!  (joking I love you no I don’t)

Modern Needs presents a Rock and Roll Happy Hour at (where else) Motor City from 6pm to 10pm…Mr. Lee is the boss of tables and will play all kinds of tough punk and garage rock for your drinking. Jukebox Jodipours the poison…and then jumps from behind the stick to hop on the turntables after 10pm to DJ at Motor City all night! Warrior class…

Wild bunch The Nuclears perform their caustic glam-punk at Tammany Hall tonight – they’re third on a bill and are joined by Breedlove for a couple of numbers to boot! They’re followed by Los Angeles band The Nasty Souls (described as a mix of The Stones, AC/DC and The Faces) and a weird rap rock act with a ridick name that you probably won’t like called Deathrow Tull. But DJ Brian Maverick of The Nuclears spins the good rock shit all night between and after bands so there! 8pm, $5 cover.

Tonight at Bowery Electric: Iggy Pop’s classic 1977 album Kill City is to be performed in it’s entirety tonight by a group called The Hebrew Ladies, fronted by downtown performance artist / rock singer extraordinaire Tammy Faye Starlight…if that wasn’t weird/wild enough, they’re followed by The Othermen and a reunion of The New York Howl called The New York Fowl Harmonic…evening kicks off at 8pm and the cover is $8 as well, imagine that…

Tonight at Mr. Fine Wine’s weekly soul spin at Botanica, he is joined by none other than Jonathan Toubin on the decks! Remember when they used to have the dueling Wednesday night hangs? Now they are reunited and it feels so good. Party starts at 10, and Mr. Toubin should be arriving come midnight…no cover.

Back in Brooklyn it’s One Chord Progression taking over the decks at Abilene in Cobble Hill…Tony LoFi, Ana Anabolic, Sommer Santoro and guest Kat Knuka play all the music that’s fit to have a fit to…garage, power pop, punk, 50′s R&B, all that noise…starting at 8pm and going till maybe 2…no cover…

Thursday April 18th

Tonight at The Gutter in Williamsburg: The long awaited album release party for the dark lords of the scene Twin Guns! They got their vinyl and CD’s ready for your ravenous ears tonight, with support from The Othermen and Triple Hex! It’s gonna be quite the affair…8pm kick off time and a mere $5 cover…

Apparently there’s this thing called The East Village Music Festival (they still have music in the East Village???) and part of it is taking place tonight at a place I haven’t been to in forever, Alphabet Lounge (104 Ave. C), with a bunch of hooligans of the garage and punk species: Lex Loser, No Dinner Tonight, Deacon Bishop Revival and Pain Addict…8pm, $10 cover…

Meanwhile in China Town: Fontanas hosts a bill in their rock cavern downstairs featuiring Wax Darts, The Mad Doctors, and The Enthusiasts…9pm for all this, $8 cover…

As always at Otto’s Shurnken Head on a Thursday you can vibe out at Move Your Mule, where Agent Jay and friends drop dub and rocksteady gems and jams from 10pm on… no cover…

Another great night is in store at THE new Thursday hang, Loaded at Passenger Bar…Mick Marsh is joined by partner Jo Murray to play some brit rock, shoegaze, punk and glam for the drinking public from 10pm till close…it will also be the after party for the band Black Onassis so if you wanna rub shoulders with the guy from Kasabian here’s your window…no cover!

ANOTHER big show tonight across town as reunited King Khan and BBQ Show and Bloodshot Bill roll through to Glasslands in the WB…wait never mind, it’s ALSO sold out. Good luck. Kill a rockabilly dude and take his ticket, or something!

Or better, yet, support yer locals: it should be a cool but likely not sold out scene at The Grand Victory tonight, with performances by Bradley Dean and the Terminals, Wizard Sex, The Juggs and Mighty Fine, for a mighty fine bill! All this action kicks off at 8pm in that order for a mere $7 dollars…why not make a night of it and stick around for Soul-A-Go-Go which happens immediately after? It’s that dancing svengali Jumpy and his guest Sheila B dropping soul science from 11pm into the night! No cover after the bands are done…
