Copycat, the twice monthly covers series at 14th Street’s fallen Tiki bar Otto’s Shrunken Head, pays tribute to David Bowie tonight. Luxurious Faux Furs are among the combos rocking a set and guest DJ Allan Dias of PiL makes up for missing the John Lydon night. FREE

At Motor City, Erick Hughes of Golden Error and the Mute Tremors blog DJs Jonathan Toubin’s spot, with some bar proceeds going to JT’s recovery fund. Expect an eclectic but always awesome mix of punk, 80′s post/punk and garage. FREE

Surfacing once again like the white whale, Brooklyn punks Schweinehund appear at Williamsburg’s Trash Bar around 10PM… one day I will actually see this band. I promise. $?

Elsewhere, Mr Fine Wine rocks his usual spot at Botanica and we believe Matt Hollywood is at 138 Ludlow Street.

THURSDAY:

Fuzzanova! With a name like that, how could you go wrong?  This night mixes psych bands the Lightning Kites and Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade with Brazilian and South American DJs spinning crazy fuzz, latin and other goodies.  Guest DJ and lead robot Captain Heartlock throws some MC5 and other crazy shapes into the mix.  Happening at an apparently renovated Suffolk, not far off the Williamsburg bridge on the Mannahatta side and FREE

Otherwise we’ve got two DJ nights:

Sunday February 19th

Got ourselves a semi-active little Sunday this evening with a little more than just the usual stuff! Tonight in Manhattan at Bowery Electric The Waldos, The Nuclears, and The Mess Around will be playing. For those of you who don’t know The Waldos are basically a continuation of The Heartbreakers with Walter Lure leading the band and honestly, its pretty damn good! Worth checking out if you haven’t seen them before. Doors open at 8PM and its $8 to squeeze on in!

Also tonight one of GaragepunkNYC’s very own, Mr. Heartlock, will be spinning at Legion from 10PM till 4AM! He’ll be thrownin’ down garage/psych, soul, exotica, glam, clam, jam-o-rams! Apparently there is also a show in the backroom as well, but there’s no info. Very mysterious! Maybe its Guns’n'Roses playing a super secret show! Oh boy!

Moving on to the usual mumbo jumbo. Andy Maltz from Little Killers/Underthings and Dave the Spazz will be spinning 50s and 60s jams at Union Pool from 10PM till 2AM while Johnny from Mutant Genes/Nervous Assistant will be blasting punk and metal down the street at Macri Park from 10PM till 4AM!

This ones gonna be a quicky…Country night at Union Pool from 10PM till 2AM with Tony & Cowboy Mark and yours truly down the street at Macri Park from 10PM till 4AM spinning garage, punk, soul, r&b, and other shit.

Tuesday February 21st

Didn’t really see much going on besides the bladder busting Hot Dog night at Bar Matchless. Buy 1 get 1 free drinks and kick ass DJs spinning soul, garage, and r&b from 10PM till 3AM! Make that bladder scream for mercy!

Oh and we reached a real milestone today: the most ridiculous ad of all time is being fed through Google right here on the blog: Punk dating! That’s right, you too can date someone who also, uh, has really cheesy taste in earrings?!

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Let’s get started a bit early today…
At 6PM (really, bushwick? SIX o’clock?), another edition of ‘Thought Corruption Fridays’ a marathon-like show of loft punk bands comes to ‘The Kicking Corpse’ (good venue name) at 55-21 Flushing ave, off the Jefferson L.  Featured this time are Mutant Genes (formerly Closed Casket, formerly White Fright) who have already changed names at least 3 times– and I STILL haven’t seen them play. Also on the bill are the Horehound, back after a long hiatus.  The show boasts of $8 packs of cigarrettes (those of you not in NYC right now will probably be wondering why this is a good thing) and $2 beers. Cover $?

At 7 o’clock CrystalBlu swings into happy hour action at Beauty Bar on 14th Street.

At 8, our own skat-loving lovie doll, Drew Redmond, fires up the turntables for happy hour at Home Sweet Home. No cover & 2 for 1 coupons from the DJ, should you dare to get close enough to smell his breath.

Then at 9 o’clock, the doors creak open on two shows in Manhattan.

At Arlene’s Grocery, it’s the album release party for Cudzoo & the Faggettes, a Drug Front records band, supported by glammers the Foxx.  Apparently it’s “sold out” but there might be space to squeeze an extra body in come show time. ($10)

At the Cake Shop, Nashville’s Natural Child (ex-Turbo Fruits) crawl into town. They’re supported by Habibi, the Dead Stars and the Neighbors. I’m guessing $10 for this one.

Later on, there’s Rebel Night, the jumpin’ and jivin’ Japanese gig at Otto’s Shrunken Head (free) and Shakin’ All Over Sideways Down, still a benefit for the recovering Jonathan Toubin, with DJs Josh Styles, Mr Vacation and Joel Stones at Home Sweet Home ($3 cover).

Here’s a late breaker: Eric Davidson spins “all manner of sleaze” at Hi-Fi from 9:30 to 2:30 tonight. FREE!

SATURDAY:

More live action!  At 9 tonight you could head to Broomie’s (formerly Brooklyn’s Beauty Bar) with the Electric People, ‘the Library is on fire’ and DJ Matt Hollywood of Brian Jonestown Massacre. FREE PBR for some part of the night as well.  FREE? J train to Myrtle.

At the Bell House, the Jay Vons (aka the Reigning Sound sans Greg Cartwright) headline a show with Strange Haze and the Parlour Tricks. Soul DJ in the front room afterwards. $?

The Horehound plays a “welcome home” show and birthday party for Val Noddy at Don Pedro as well tonight. FREE?

DJ C’Mon rolls on with her Saturday Takeover retro-rock, power pop and classic punk night at Idle Hands in Alphabet City. FREE

And finally, Anna Copa Cabanna presents her occasional live show at Joe’s Pub. This time around it’s “Love in Space” a tribute to Princess Leia and David Bowie. Reserved seating required – $15 tickets (still some available).

Hope ya’ll had a nice Valentine’s Day. Whether you made hot passionate sloppy love on a bed of dandelions, dined on artisenal goat cheeks in balsamic reduction at a fancy restaurant made to look like a bomb shelter, watched a marathon of “I Love Lucy” episodes in your underwear and devoured two pints of “Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Regrets with Loneliness Clusters” Ben & Jerry’s or drank yourself into sweet sweet oblivion at the strip joint with your mates, you’re probably hurting today, or feeling nothing.

Concurrently, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot going on this mid week to cure your love hangover… I’m sure it’s coincidental – but it’s a nice segue, right? RIGHT!

It’s the February installment of the space lounge / spy music / exotica & obscuro soundtrack party Turtleneck: A Retro Futuristic Extravaganza! As usual DJ Xerox and Ursula 1000 bring the aforementioned sounds from 10 till 4, with live act The Boss Guitars – a Ventures cover band! – performing at 11pm. Going down at Otto’s Shrunken Head, no cover, with $5 specialty martinis to be had!

Ursula 1000 is back in the city for the second night in a row, joining forces as special guest of Mick Marsh for a NEW monthly spin caled Beatmaker! These two men of distinguished and mind melting taste will be spinning non stop garage, psych, freakbeat, kraut rock, prog and glam at the Lower East Side’s Lolita (266 Broome Street and the corner of Allen) from 10pm till close. No cover! Dashing cocktails!

Meanwhile, over in Park Slope (closer to Brooklyn Heights, in all actuality!) at Last Exit, come thrill to the sounds of DJ InBetween and his special guest Big Sir for another edition of 7 Inches and a Hole! The gents promise unassailable soul music and garage rock at 45 rotations per minute, and you’d best believe it’ll happen. They’re on from 10-2, with no cover…

Rounding out, you’ve got Agent Jay, Bunny Punch and friends bringing dub and ska sounds for the children to Otto’s Shurnken Head for Move Your Mule…10pm – 4am, no cover…

Monday February 13th

DJ Uncle Heavy will be doing Blue Monday at Bar 4 in Park Slope. He’ll be spinning 50s, 60s, 70s r&b and soul from 9PM till what I can only assume would be till 4AM. Like I’ve previously said about this place, I’m pretty sure this is the place with a heavy duty list of awesome beer.

Up next is Lady Bree’s DJ night at Fontana’s in Manhattan where she’ll be playing punk, post punk, shoegaze, and glam from 10PM until late late late!

Also, last but not least for Monday is yours truly at Macri Park from 10PM until 4AM with country night at Union Pool down the street with Cowboy Mark & Tony from 10PM till 2AM!

Tuesday February 14th

Yaay its Valentines Day! Time to go out, get drunk, try to shack up with a mutually desperate person of the opposite sex, fail, go home, jerk off, cry, then contemplate suicide! Here are just a few places to go to ensure the said routine:

I might as well kick start this bitch with the pizza party at Lulus in Greenpoint with Nouvellas, The Foxx, Steel Phantoms, and DJ Dopewerewolf & MC Hart. Starts at 9PM and this motherfucker is FREE! That’s right…free show AND pizza!

Also DJ Radio Rahill from Habibi will be celebrating this lovely holiday with CUPID IS DEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAD! at Lady Jays in Williamsburg from 10PM till 4AM.

Fashion Foward

What’s up, city! The weekend is here. Call your mom! (Make sure your gin rage calms down a bit first, though!)

I’d make some quip about Fashion Week but I doubt anyone (who reads this blog) cares too much. You shop at Beacon’s Closet/The Salvation Army/The Dumpster outside C-Town, and let’s  be real, YOUR idea of fashion week is the week you really have to do laundry but you’ve got no time so you don’t, so you reach in your dirty clothes hamper and scratch and sniff for the shirt that doesn’t smell completely like soccer practice.

Not that I am a complete hater of all this artifice: I am a dandy who likes to dress to impress after all, and honestly I WOULD love to go to one of those ridiculous parties one day. Just to drink all their booze, see if all the cliches about stupid beautiful rich people are true and hopefully make a fool out of  them and myself!

You might be able to get CLOSE if you go to the FIRST thing we got on tap tonight…

Friday February 10

The Vivian Girls return from limbo for a special, outdoors performance this evening in conjunction with Fashion Week! Kinda odd, but find the first ladies of dissonant garage rock will be playing in the Meat Packing district,  in the pedestrian walkway called Gansevoort Plaza (Little West 12th and 9th Avenue) to be exact! They’re scheduled to go on at 7:30 sharp, so be timely. And should the Olsen Twins show up: give them PIZZA

But fuck your fashion and back to the grittier side of things: greaser action tonight at Williamsburg’s latest rock haunt of Grand Street, Grand Victory, in the form of loud and raucous performances by The Thunderfucks (who should have their new EP on hand for purchase), Laura Angel’s band The Screamin’ Rebel Angels and The Arkhams!

Keeping it geographical for you – a hop skip and jump away at The Shop Brooklyn, located on Metropolitian Avenue and Driggs and billed as “New York City’s only licensed bar (full liquor, wine and beer) inside an active motorcycle garage (and a place i’m dying to check out personally) – thrill to performances by Bradley Dean and the Terminals,  The Brooklyn What, girl gang Crazy Pills, Twin Guns (playing a set of completely new material!), and only the second show of Auto Bonfire, the new wave/punk influenced project featuring members of The Electric Mess amongst others. $5 cover, bands as listed from the time of 8pm.

Onwards to Greenpoint at the mighty St. Vitus, where amped up power punks The Highway Gimps open up with Organs and freakbeat prince’s of the street The Above! Bands in that order with 8pm doors and $6 cover. Our own intrepid founder/blogger Shimmy DJ’s rock and soul between bands and into the allegedly wintery night!

Tonight at Otto’s Shrunken Head, it’s the “art rock” edition of monthly party RockEM SockEM, featuring bands with art school weirdness dripping down  their guitar strings: freak-folk /country rag performer Larry Krone, spaced out post-punk sounds from a band called Sick Cell and trashy, NYC style trash glam by The Ruffian Arms. Hosts and DJ’s Ultra V and DJ Omega spin punk, garage and new wave in the front all night long. Everything starts at 10 and there’s never a cover in Tiki Rocker Heaven.

Nogood Nick has a happy hour (6pm – 10pm) spin tonight at the aformentioned Otto’s Shrunken Head! His Sophisticated Boom-Boom helps you start your trouble night out right with 50/60′s R&B, soul and rock and roll, no cover of course…

A few blocks west at Beauty Bar of 14th Street, CrystalBlu continues her weekly spin To Sir With Love, regaling cosmetically inclined ladies and post-work everymen with girl groups, psychedelia, surf and garage rock sounds from 7pm till 11pm…

Tonight’s edition of Shakin’ All Over at Chinatown’s Home Sweet Home has Josh Styles spinning tough garage, soul and R&B from 11pm till close, with the $3 cover after 11pm…do I need to mention at the point Metropolis Vintage’s Happy Hour that precedes it from 8pm till 11, with it’s buy one get one specials? Do I? Not sure who’s DJing tonight but you can rest assured it will be TOPS.

Meanwhile on the upper west side: you are the fiend and La La Linda is the dealer and she’s got your fix of garage punk, psych, soul and funky funk at  The Ding Dong Lounge from 10pm till the end of the night! Never a cover…

Back to Brooklyn: It’s edition 12 of Let’s Boogaloo, the dance party du jour at Zebulon in Williamsburg: tonight Girl Soul, Ol’ Stark and fellow colleague and Killer Diller Records proprietor Charles Gaskins spin an eclectic mix of  international beat, Latin rump shakers, bongo breakbeat, and exotic R&B and killer hula music, all for dancing! 10pm kickoff, no cover!

Grace of Spades monthly roots, dub and dancehall reggae party Love So Nice returns to it’s NEW home, the underground party and performance spot The Lake in Bushwick (258 Johnson Ave of the Montrose Avenue L stop). Certainly more irie vibes to be had here than in some bar, no doubt! A mere $2 cover and 9pm doors for this fun…

Saturday February 11

The super heavy psychedelic, prog-metal band The Phantom Family Halo will be celebrating the release of their debut full length “When I Fall Out” (from Knitting Factory Records) this very evening at St. Vitus, hitting the stage at 11pm and supported by Loom and Old Baby…show starts at 8 with a $10 cover

Saturday night basement punk at The Charleston, you say? Put THAT on top of your somewhat dry free pizza, foolie! Downstairs bill with Puerto Rican hard core Cojoba, trashy thrash punkers The Amputees, everyone’s favorite sax-i-tude terrors The Jigglers, The Harlots and The Grains…first band hits at 8, not sure of the cover ($6? $8?)

Our mystery man of dance Jumpy is joined by Big Sir for tonight’s edition of Soul A Go Go at The Satellite Lounge! You know just what to expect, danceable hi octane soul and R&B movers on ’45 rpm format all night long from 10pm till close for no cover. Move!

WEDNESDAY (TONIGHT):

February generally sucks here in the big city, but one thing to look forward to is perhaps the best edition of Copycat all year– the tribute to Arthur Lee & Love.  It’s been nearly 6 years since Arthur Lee died and I’ve got to believe that between Shaw’Nuff and this bunch of devotees, New York City has the finest tributes anywhere in the world to one of my favorite 60′s dudes.

This year Madam Robot & the LOVE Brigade return to headline and they’re opened for by the You Followers (featuring Michael Lynch of the Brimstones/Anything People, Matt Marando from the Dirty Shames among others) and the Bonet Lockes (with members of the Minerva Lions).

Having been to the past couple of these, I can say that these folks work hard to wring the right sounds out of these timeless songs. Not to be missed tonight at Otto’s Shrunken Head on 14th street. FREE.

So strap on your crash test dummy helmet and prepare for battle against drunken bros in the street if you leave the house. But anyways, your options for entertainment are pretty scarce tonight. You’ve got Andy Maltz & Dave the Spazz at Union Pool spinning choice 50s and 60s slabs from 10PM till 2AM and down the street Johnny from what once was Closed Casket and now Mutant Genes(ran into issues with the band name) will be DJing punk and metal at Macri Park from 10PM till 4AM. They’ll more than likely have the game on at Macri too if you feel like multitasking and pretending that you care about football.

Monday February 6th

Yet another day that will be easy to sum up in just a few words. There’s country night at Union Pool with Tony & Cowboy Mark from 10PM till 2AM and then I’ll be down the street at Macri Park spinning garage, r&b, soul, and other shit from 10PM till 4AM. However to spice things up this week Avi Spivak will be guest DJing with me. Should be an awesome night! Kickin’ out the jams, motherfucker!

As the pattern would show Tuesday is also slim on options. You’ve got yourself Modern Needs with DJ Lee Greenfield will be spinning at Last Exit Bar from 9PM till what I can only assume is 4AM? Then the always awesome Hot Dog Night at Bar Matchless with a rotation of awesome DJs spinning killer 50s and 60s shit while you make your liver shiver with fear with buy 1 get 1 free drinks the whole fucking night from 10PM till 3AM.

The big to-do of tonight is the bon voyage party for Labretta Suede and the Motel 6 at Lone Wolf in beautfiul Bushwick Brooklyn. Those insane garage rock Kiwi’s are going away on tour for over a whole damn month to their native New Zealand…the city is just about to get a little more quiet and slightly more sane. They are joined in this rock and roll bacchanal by The Naked Heroes and Lovestruck, with Drew Redmond (you again?) spinning greasy rock and soul all night long! Supposedly Lux Interior’s ghost is scheduled for a special guest appearance on the anniversary of his ascension. Hide your mom!

First Saturday’s means the only pure surf rock party going in the entire tri-state, Unsteady Freddie’s Surf Rock Shindig at Otto’s Shrunken Head!
