Hey, Flowers! The Weekend – it’s BACK like Rambo!

It’s the penultimate weekend of May, a month that has been as chock full of rock and roll glory as any we’ve seen in some time! For the third weekend in a row there’s SO much competition for your pleasure that you’re going to either have to make some tough choices or figure out that cloning device Dr. Mindbender left down in the laundry room. My job is to inform you of your options, how you choose to blow your mind is your own concern!

Onwards…

Friday May 18th

If you have the true warriors heart, you’ll be starting early and crashing into the morning star:

Bowery Electric hosts a ferocious bill that kicks off at 7:30 pm (still early enough for happy hour) – first up is the electric blues beasts Daddy Long Legs, followed by The Master Plan (rock and roll group comprising members of The Dictators and the Fleshtones) and a group fronted by Deniz Tek, guitarist and founding member of the legendary Radio Birdman! Again, get to this early as the downstairs transforms like a Cinderalla carriage into something fans of our scene will not like at 11pm…not sure of the cover but count on no less than $8 smackers…

The return of Cavestomp is making major waves in the garage punk and power pop scene of New York city, continuing tonight with a stellar lineup that features (in order, from 9pm) Big Riff, a jangly garage duo from Qeubec called PONCTUATION, <s>their fellow countryman and garage punk veteran Skip Jensen and his new band</s> and our own lords of dark surf and reverb nightmares, Twin Guns. This happens tonight at Bushwick’s Brooklyn Fireproof at 9pm, and is a solid, SOLID block of premium rock for a measly $6 dollars! Can not lose.

MEANWHILE not much farther away at the capital of trash known as Don Pedro, is another stellar line up featuring bands I have not previously been privy to but are worthy of your attention: Baba Yaga (an exceptional poppy psych band with garage flourishes) – the extremely rude and weird punk rock and boogey band Baby Erection, and all star cover band The Psycho Hippies! Party kicks off at 9pm…not sure of the cover ($6 dollah?)

Two shows I’m privy to but can’t find too much information on as far as the other acts or times:

The Arkhams bring their Cthulu lovin’ psychobilly swag to Trash Bar

The Horehound rise from the pound at The Fifth Estate

(any other info is welcome, comment section!)

MEANWHILE at Lone Wolf: Another fantastic Pixie 007 production headlined by the harp and horror yells of Organs, fresh off their conquering tour of the south and midwest! They are joined by psych girls American Sun and two of Richmond VA’s finest, Tungs and Heavy Midgets! $5 Cover…

IN THE CITY: It’s the return of the one two punch to end all boredom at Home Sweet Home: DJ Todd Spinn (Front man of The Siberians) plays raucuous garage and frat rock records for Metropolis Vintage Happy Hour from 8pm till 11pm (no cover, 2 for one beers and well drinks!), after which time Jonathan Toubin returns to his rightful place at the helm of Shakin’ All Over Under Sidways Down from 11pm till the end of the night ($3 cover after 11)…it’s a non stop dance party all night and an education for all the squares. Take your sassafras down there and Show them how!

La La Linda is uptown at The Ding Dong Lounge , doing her Friday Night Best to inoculate you from nonsense with healthy doses of garage, psychedelia, soul and funk from 10pm till the rooster crows…no cover!

If you’re gonna be in Manhattan early for the Bowery Electric gig or just wanna shake your 9-5 ya ya’s out, I can’t recommend more checking out the duo of Popwell and Lil’ Jerk for their happy hour throwdown Living for Kicks at Hi-Fi in the East Village! They’re on from 6pm till 10pm and dare you to bear sonic witness to a domestic argument over which format reigns supreme: sultry 60′s soul or dirty Jamaican rub-a-dub dub? Can’t we all just get along? Fuck that! Dance it out. No cover!

It is ALSO that Friday of the month for the best 50′s R&B, twist and rockabilly dance party probably ANYWHERE in the east coast, Rebel Night! Otto’s Shrunken Head is the place, ace, and the kids dress and move like they mean it. Your host DJ’s Dj Sei, Jun, and Hiromu (from The Baxx SiSi’s) are joined by the one and only Dirty Dan on the decks this evening! Kicks off at 10pm, and as usual for everything awesome that happens at Otto’s there is no cover…

Finally for Friday, it’s the return of Knights of the Round Table, where Sir Mikey, Sir Chris and Sir (Mr.) Fine Wine regale all the kids with the finest, choicest and rarest 6o’s soul and R&B on 45′ vinyl, over yonder at trouble palace of fried chicken thighs and the big pina colada The Commodore! 10pm – 4am, with a slow dance session to close the night out at 3 for all the horny toads to pair off to…

Saturday May 19th

If you didn’t blow your wad Friday night and you have the wherewithal to rise during daylight hours like a real human being, there’s some fun to be had in the sun on what is forecast to be a gorgeous Saturday – it’s the annual Brooklyn Flea Spring Record Fair! All you vinyl junkies assemble to peruse amongst 34 vendors (indie record shops, labels and dealers alike), taste all that delicious “Artisinal” shit from Smorgasburg (cupcakes and jerk chicken go together like hot sex and cigarettes!) and do it all to the sounds from various cool kids with cool taste who will DJ for you throughout the affair, including members of the bands Psychic Ills and X-Ray Eyeballs! 11am till 6pm, located at 27 N. 6th Street, down by the East River in (where else) Williamsburg BK…

And then…night falls:

Hullabaloo returns! Tonight’s edition takes place in it’s natural habitat Don Pedro, headlined by Cincinnati OH trashy garage punk band The Long Gones! Check their sound:

These guys are supported by some of our own towns grimiest: Glam rock valkyries The Foxx, the fuzz ladies of American Sun and the squawk and roll frenzy of The Jigglers! Our very own Shimmy and Charles Gaskins spin greasy rock and r&b records between bands and into the not so sweet night! First band is on at 9pm, $ 7 cover!

It’s eerie and unfortunate that a just as powerful garage punk bill is happening at exactly the same time across the water, courtesy once again of Cavestomp: at Parkside Lounge, which looks to be holding the mantle for live non-douche rock and roll in the East Village, the garage show purveyors present a killer bill: PONCTUATION and <s>Skip Jensen </s> back for a second night in a row and are joined by the Farfisa drenched psychedelic fury of The Living Kills and King’s County’s Kings of Freakbeat The Above, who are debuting a brand new lineup and configuration! All of this for only $6? PRIMITIVE. 8pm start time, children!

Nick Waterhouse and his Tarots perform their neuvo retro soul revue tonight at Mercury Lounge, with Mr. Robinson (Dig Deeper) as your DJ…the show is SOLD OUT…but hey, hang out in front of the club and somebody might sell you a ticket, miracles HAPPEN, baby…

Not much farther away at Idle Hands catch DJ C’Mon for The Saturday Takeover, as she battles the beasts of village mediocrity with choice selections of garage, indie, power pop and punk records from 10pm till close in the land of bourbon and burgers! No cover…

And that’s the weekend, folks! Check back here on SUNDAY to see what Drew Redmond has to say whats going on for the early week. Have a Good Time, Ya’ll. Go Do You, Girl – Go Do You.

Here we go – another crazy midweek for all you school night suckers… and it’s just prep for another killer weekend. All hail the month of May!

TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY):

Sonny Vincent, he of punk-rock Testors and god of ye olde KBDee, brings a new group to town: the Bad Reactions. They’re made up of members of Ex-Humans/Foster Care and other rock’n'roll miscreants who were likely naught but twinkles in their daddies’ eyes when Vincent first tore up a stage. Two chances to catch Vincent this week– tonight’s at Don Pedro. They’re ably supported by Nuclear Santa Claust whose name will be so much better when it’s December and the Mess Around. I believe this one is $5?

Over at Otto’s Shrunken Head, it’s time to say goodbye to Turtleneck, that biweekly/semimonthly night of film soundtracks and retro-futuristic fun… at least for a while (I guess turtlenecks are a little bit stuffy for the Summer). DJed as always by Xerox and Ursula 1000 with live bands SCORE! and Lightning Kites. FREE

At Motor City, find Danny Goldstein of the Stalkers throwing down the platters that matter all night. FREE

Elsewhere in DJ land, it’s Mr Fine Wine at Botanica, Grace of Spades at Brooklyn Stable and Matt Hollywood at Local 138. All FREE.

THURSDAY:

Power pop goils the Babyshakes are at Union Pool for their first show in a while with 1-800-BAND and a group called ‘Games‘. $8?

Sonny Vincent brings the Bad Reactions to the Delancey in the city tonight, this time supported by the Stalkers. $5

Elsewhere you can find skankin’ DJ action at Otto’s Shrunken Head for Move Your Mule. FREE

That’s all for me folks… your weekend update will be right here courtesy of Captain Heartlock on Friday.

SHIMMY

After closing off a successful multi-year run five years ago with the first appearance of The Sonics in NYC, Cavestomp! returned this past weekend to a venue much closer in spirit to where the original Cavestomp! series began over 28 years ago. Rebooted as a multi-day garage music festival in 1997 by promoter and former member of The Vipers, Jon Weiss, the festival aimed to keep alive the songs and attitude that helped create a small but vibrant scene in NYC in the mid-80s. Throughout the years the festival brought old and new bands to the attention of hundreds of eager garage music aficionados. The current series of Cavestomp! shows brings the experience back down to its roots by showcasing the new breed of garage bands while keeping a toe in the water of tradition by also booking a small handful of much older local groups.

This past weekend was a perfect example. Friday’s line up brought up The Electric Mess, Paul Caporino (of M.O.T.O.), Light Bulb Alley, The Bambook Kids and The Mess Around. Saturdays showcased Shaw Nuff (a band of garage music veterans originally formed as a tribute band to the late Greg Shaw of Bomb records) and Chris Such and the Savages (members of the 80s NYC garage band The Headless Horsemen playing under their beat/R&B combo alter ego).

As always, more shots can be found here.

I am one tuckered duck and have very little energy to write more than what is necessary today. Lucky you! So lets dip right in on this shit!

Sunday May 13th

Got yourself a few options for Mother’s Day in case you were planning on going out and getting mommy dearest shit faced, do heaps of blow, and fuck a stranger that may soon become your new father. One option being at Knitting Factory tonight with Gentlemen Jesse & His Men, Barreracudas, Fletcher C. Johnson, and DJ Tony Lo-Fi. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8:30 with advance tickets at $8 and $10 at the door.

Perhaps mommy is down for some taco action. Maybe you should bring her to Union Pool where Andy Maltz from Underthings/Little Killers and Dave the Spazz from WFMU will be spinning 50s and 60s gems all damn night from 10PM till 2AM. This would probably be a pretty good option if your mother is a bit aged and you’re concerned about that high fiber diet she’s been on lately to keep herself regular. There’s a lot of bathrooms here so you won’t have to worry about her shitting herself while waiting in line and ruining mother’s day.

Monday May 14th

Alright, Mother’s Day is <over. She's back in the old folks home so you can go back to your usual dirtbag routine for a Monday night without your Mom judging you and telling you how badly she wishes she had gotten an abortion. This Monday actually has a decent amount of stuff going on. Hell! There's even a show! For those of you who happened to miss MOTO the past few nights he played you got one more chance to see Paul Caporino on Monday at Local 269 doing a solo show with Michael Lynch, Dear Hearts, and Big Riff at 9PM for a whopping $7!

Down over in Park Slope territory DJ Uncle Heavy will be spinning at Bar 4 throwing down 50s, 60s, & 70s r'n'b and soul from 9PM till probably 2AM I'm guessing.

There is of course the usual Monday night line-up over at the Lorimer stop with Country Night at Union Pool with Tony & Cowboy Mark spinning from 9PM till 2AM while yours truly is down the street at Macri Park from 10PM till 4AM spinning garage, punk, soul, r&b, rockabilly, and a mix of other crap.

Now last but not least for Monday night is a good buddy of mine from Germany who is in town until Thursday and scored himself some DJ gigs while he was here. He goes by the name Hank Strummer and has a label in Germany called Rhythm Island Records which has had releases by Jon Spencer, Bloodshot Bill, and various other european bands I'm not all that familiar with...YET! He'll be spinning rare german 50s & 60s rock'n'roll records at Otto's Shrunken Head from 10PM till 2AM.

http://www.facebook.com/events/431576836871399/

Tuesday May 15th

Yet another lonely Tuesday with nothing else going on besides Hot Dog night at Bar Matchless with buy 1 get 1 free drinks and kick ass DJs all night long from 10PM till 3AM. Also, as mentioned above with Hank Strummer he will also be having a guest DJ slot this Tuesday at Hot Dog night from 12:30 till 3:00. So for those of you who slacked off on <s>Monday</s>you can catch him here as well.

;

All done.

Oh weekend, how we’ve missed you, and clearly you miss us because you give so much without taking. It’s another one of those “which way do I go, George, which way do I go???” weekends where there’s just so much quality trouble to choose from – and the weather is drop dead gorgeous to boot! And for once Saturday has even more going on than Friday! Well, you are all tough boys and girls, so tighten up your wigs, button your garters, and steel your livers!

Friday May 11th

Show of the night goes to the folks behind the resurgent series of parties under the banner of Cavestomp, tonight over at Parkside Lounge on East Houston Street: kicking off at 8pm it’s the long awaited return of psycho-soul garagepunk witches The Electric Mess (of which I am a proud member, end of disclaimer), a solo performance by Paul Caporino of legendary New Orleans garagepunk group M.O.T.O. (more on that on Saturday!) lo-fi dirty garagers Light Bulb Alley, the Drugfront Records signed Bamboo Kids and The Mess Around! Top to bottom, it’s a kick to your soul’s gall bladder and a punch in your sad! All the bands, in that order, with strict start times and a measly $6 dollar cover…

Oh happy day: fresh off his huge joyous smash of a welcome home party last weekend at Brooklyn Bowl, the mythical beast Jonathan Toubin returns to his party Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down at Home Sweet Home…the man ain’t missed a beat. You know the score, he’s on from 11pm till close rocking all those wicked soul, R&B and garage 45′s for a $3 cover…tonight as a special treat for happy hour it’s none other than dance fanatic and now best selling pulp mystery novelist Jumpy spinning garage and soul from 8pm till 11!

Not much farther away at Motor City you’ve got Gories / Dirtbombs man Mick Collins spinning rock and roll for all the sharks from 10pm till close…no cover for that one…

As always on a Friday night, La La Linda is making it alright at The Ding Dong Lounge, spinning garage punk classics, summertime psych, sensuous soul and funk from 10pm till close…

Saturday May 12th

I’m just going to use the words from the promoter’s mouth as they summed this up the best: “Psychedelic sounds, garage reverberations, druggy Americana, spaghetti-western cinematic spacescapes” – yes, YES to ALL of that. For once, a good reason to be at Lit on the weekend comes to us in the form of an outstanding bill featuring the haunted talents of Spindrift, Weird Owl, Twin Guns and The Strangers Family Band…first act hits at 9pm and you’re going on one hell of a trip for a mere $6 dollars…

Wow, these guys don’t stop ever! I applaud. A SECOND Cavestomp show this weekend back at Parkside Lounge: check out 60′s garage and mod obscurities cover band Shaw’Nuff, a supergroup that comprises various members of The Headless Horsemen, The Left Banke, The Brimstones and The Grip Weeds, amongst others! They are first at 8:30 and followed by Chris Such and The Savages, which is pretty much most of The Headless Horsemen in of itself…I’m thinking this will also be a $6 cover, or maybe free? Find out!

Another Saturday night, another rager at the natural home for all things fuzzy and savage Don Pedro: it’s a new party called Rockerville Strikes Back, with a bill kicking off at 9pm with Foster Care opening, followed by 1-800 Band, Midnight Creeps and a ultra rare appearance by the aforementioned M.O.T.O. ! With Mr. Tony Lo-Fi spinning in between and after sets and an $8 cover for one for the ages…

Over at Cakeshop: tonight it’s the psych-roots-band of gypsy hobos Your 33 Black Angels performing: they are headliners and are preceded by two heady, touring acts: a band that encapsulates the “Haight Ashbury” era of sound, psych band Sky Picnic and Boston’s acid harmony trio Sand Reckoner! Doors at 8pm, $7 cover…

Come say bon voyage to the soul punk kings Mighty Fine before they embark for a tour of the land of “pip pip cheerio fish and chips football oi! sweetey darling” (If I’ve offended any Brits reading this, it’s only out of love)! They are joined on guitar by Mick Collins and headline a bill featuring the baroque disco sexbots Discovery and girl gang a go-go Crazy Pills, with Leah from The Nouvellas spinning all kinds of sick records between bands! 8pm doors, $8 cover…

Onto DJ gigs, chief of which tonight is the long awaited return of The Soul Clap Dance Off! Jonathan Toubin is back in the saddle slinging high octane soul and R&B 45′s while all the kids do their best to shake it to make it, competing for a $100 cash grand prize and a $75 Metropolis Vintage gift certificate! And even better, Phast Phreddie appears as guest DJ to boot! The party starts at 11, the contest is on at 1am (filled with select judges from the scene) and you’d best make sure to stake your place on the dance floor as I expect Glasslands to fill to capacity with sweaty lovers…not sure of the cover, but count on at least $8…

DJ C’Mon is your surest bet to not hear horrible top 4o music in the East Village on a Saturday night – nay, she is your your salvation, your bastion of garage rock, power pop and punk at whisky palace Idle Hands! No cover from 1opm till close…

Lovers of exotica, soul jazz (and we aren’t talking pretentious and inaccessible college jazz here) wah wah guitars, Hammond organ jams, tribal beats, international go go and grind, Latin grooves, bossa nova, all that good stuff that rich hipsters from the 50′s would shag and frug to – get thee to Zebulon for Let’s Boogaloo! Your captain’s of the high coolness for the evening are Ol’ Stark, Kamui (Hot Peas and Butta from Japan) and Popwell (Take My Tuesdays/Living For Kicks)…I suspect the Boogaloo Omnibus may stop by later on…10pm till 4am, and come to dance!

If you’re at that bad ass Mighty Fine show there’s no reason to go running out the door at the drop of the last note, as Jumpy and Big Sir immediately follow the live jams with another edition of Soul A Go-Go! They are going for high frantic right off the bat, non stop soul and 45′s for rump shaking all night from 11ish till close…

***

Great Googly Moogly, that is some fucking weekend. I am exhausted just writing all that.

Enjoy each and every moment that is your night and your life, child… Captain Heartlock

Ah yes its me again. I have double duty this week as punishment for being a degenerate in the past weeks when I accidentally ditched out on doing my Sunday posts. So you suckers are stuck reading my babbling bullshit twice this week! There’s a shit ton of stuff going on this Wednesday so strap on your party hat and get ready to call out of work on Thursday!

Wednesday May 9th

If any of you are into stuff with a 90s bubble gum type of vibe there’s a show at Union Hall with Caroline & The Treats, Les Sans Culottes, and Party Lights that starts at 8PM and $8 to get in.

For those of you who are fans of musicians who have died in freak airplane accidents then you are in luck with this weeks edition of Copycat Night at Otto’s Shurnken Head! This weeks theme is Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Richie Valens with covers done by mad man Brownbird Rudy Relic, Holly Daze, and Catspaw. Also as always DJ Xerox will be spinning various covers that are related to the theme. Starts at 9PM and although this is technically free your cheap ass better throw in a few bucks for the bands when they pass the bucket around!

This day also marks the birthday of Mitro, owner of #1 garagepunk bar in New York Don Pedro’s. That old bastard heads over the hill and turns the big 5-0 and in celebration will be having a crawfish boil at the bar for free! So be sure to stop by and show some love to Mitro and suck down some crawfish guts! Starts at 9PM! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MITRO!!!

Watch This Sound at Odyssea will be going down with a roots reggae dancehall DJ party from 9PM till what I can only assume is either 2AM or 4AM. I will also assume that this is probably free.

DJ Matt Hollywood from Brian Jonestown Massacre will be spinning at Local 138 for Jump & Shout from 10PM till 4AM. FREE!

Now for the one I’m most psyched about. Thankfully yet another reunion of one of NYC best punk bands from the past ten years, LiveFastDie. They’ll be playing at Legion Bar with Liquor Store and Ned Hayden Band which will be accompanied with DJs Erick Hughes(I think?), Eric Cecil, and Arturo Medrano. All killer, no filler! Not sure when this starts or how much it costs. I’m assuming showing up at 8PM should be about right and who the hell cares how much it is. The show is going to rule! Just throw a wad of money at the door guy when you get there. See ya there, bitches! Now enjoy this incredibly awkward music video that some kids made for Weapons that I just found:

Top soul/r&b collector Mr. Fine Wine will be doing his usual night at Botanica in Manhattan and will make you foam at the mouth with every record he throws down. Starts at 10PM and goes on till late and is free as always!

There is a possible return of Jonathan Toubin this Wednesday at Motor City after his five month hiatus. I’m not 100% sure, but either way there will be a killer DJ there spinning awesome shit. Hopefully he’s back though! Starts at 10PM and goes on until 4AM! FREEEEEEEEE!

Another mysterious one. Apparently there is rock’n'rollin DJs at St. Jerome’s as well. No DJs listed, but if you have intentions of going to St. Jermone’s I’m sure music is the last thing on your mind. You know you’re just going there to score some poon. Starts at 10PM, goes on till 4AM, and it is freeeeeeeee!

Thursday May 10th

Mark Sultan AKA BBQ has made a quick return to New York to play at Knitting Factory with Habibi, Des Roar, and DJ Tony LoFi. At this point I really wonder why Mark doesn’t just move to New York. Also I’ve heard that he is now performing with a full band and is straying from the one man band act. Should sound great! Tickets are $10 in advance and $12. Doors open at 8PM and the show starts at 9PM. Now remember, they actually start their shows on time here so don’t be showing up at fuckin’ 10PM like a retard.

DJs Agent Jay, Bunny Punch, and more will be spinning reggae 45s for Move Your Mule night at Otto’s Shrunken Head starting at 10:30. Was this always at Otto’s? I feel like this was somewhere else before.

Ok, I’m done. You guys won’t have to see me again till Sunday!

I have no idea why the fuck I’m awake this early. I don’t think I’ve managed to make a post on GaragepunkNYC any earlier than 4PM. For once I’ll be able to post this at a reasonable hour! But anyways, today calls for two reasons to celebrate. 1) I realized this past week that I’ve reached my one year anniversary for writing for this damn thing. I hope you all have enjoyed my rambling jibber jabber. 2) Today marks the official return of NYC’s favorite DJ Jonathan fuckin’ Toubin! So that being said allow me to inform you on the shit going on for the next few days.

Sunday May 6th

So as previously mentioned above with Toubin’s return of course that calls for one big ass motherfuckin’ party! That party being today at Brooklyn Bowl with a whoooole lot of shit going on. Now apparently there has been some cancelations announced with some of the DJs that were suppose to spin today including Ian Svenonius, but there’s plenty of other stuff going on so no worries! There will be performances by Kid Congo & The Pinky Monkey Birds, The K-Holes, Daddy Long Legs, Andy Animal unplugged & unleashed, Expensive Shit, and one super special super secret super awesome surprise! I will be DJing nasty garage shit in between bands as well. There will also be performances by Anna Copa Cabanna and hula hoop harlot Melissa Anne plus projections B.A. Miale and Spencer Bewley. That basically sums things up. This kick starts around 8PM and goes on all god damn night until the place is empty. Make sure you get there early! Remember, if you snooze you lose! Its gonna be a packed house! See ya there, boners! Oh, and this shit is FREEEEEEE! FREEE! FREEEEE!

http://www.facebook.com/events/314529791949682/

For those of you who are power pop lovers Jim Basnight will be doing a solo show tonight at Otto’s Shrunken Head. Now there is very little info listed on the Facebook event page. Not sure what time this starts. I just sort of assumed it was 8PM or so. If you give a damn you can just look it up yourself to make sure you’re on time.

http://www.facebook.com/events/355308654517754/

The usual DJ duo Andy Maltz from Underthings/Little Killers and Dave the Spazz from WFMU will be spinning at Union Pool as always spinning killer 50s & 60s shit from 10PM till 4AM.

Monday May 7th

Got one thing going on this Monday that’s not just part of the ordinary routine. There’s a show at Grand Victory with No Excuses, Play Like A Champion, Madam Robot & The Lust Brigade, Kill Baby Kill, plus more TBA. This baby starts around 8PM and will cost ya a pesky $6!

http://www.facebook.com/events/293369097414384/

Now onto the routine stuff. Country Night at Union Pool with Cowboy Mark & Tony spinning from now at 9PM till 2AM instead of 10PM. For those of you who were always left disappointed with only a measly four hours of country music they got themselves a one hour extension for their night! So now you’ve got yourself a whopping five hours of country on Monday nights!

Also, I will be down the street at Macri Park spinning garage, punk, soul, funk, r&b, rockabilly, blah, blah, blah from 10PM till 4AM.

Tuesday May 8th

The past few weeks Tuesdays have been pretty grim with options, but this week seems to be pretty good. For you early risers who like to get shit faced early because you’ve got one of those REAL jobs working from 9 to 5 there’s the Happy Hour Freakout at Motor City with our own Captain Heartlock spinning garage, psych, soul, and exotica from 6PM till 10PM.

There’s apparently a new night at The Cove that one of the old bartenders from Macri Park has started with a Bring Your Own 7″ policy with punk, garage, glam, and anything else rock related pretty much. Starts at 9PM and goes till 4AM! I’ll probably swing by and thrown down some singles.

http://www.facebook.com/events/165692396892612/

Oh shit! A third option? Eric Davidson from Livids/New Bomb Turks will be spinning at 200 Orchard in Manhattan from 10PM till 4AM and I can only assume he’s spinning punk, garage, and other rockin’ shit.

As usual, last but not least there is good ol’ Hotdog Night at Bar Matchless with buy 1 get 1 free drinks and kick ass DJs all fucking night from 10PM till 3AM. Get drunk and slay some drunken Greenpoint poontang!

I’ve got some action for you this Friday & Saturday but the real action seems to be kicking off Sunday with Jonathan Toubin’s big ol’ party at Brooklyn Bowl… after that, it’s pretty much a steady stream of awesomeness every week into late June!

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Two early happy hour DJ gigs tonight:

DJ CrystalBlu at Beauty Bar Manhattan (FREE)

Our own Drew Redmond spins 45s, possibly changes out of his impossibly stained Toubin shirt and generally stinks up the joint at Home Sweet Home from 8 til 11 (FREE)

In live action news, we’ve got the Pierced Arrows (formerly Dead Moon) at Mercury Lounge tonight (the late show). There’s not much more to be said about these folks except that they are totally crucial. $12?

Elsewhere, Habibi plays a show at DeathByAudio with a bunch of bands we’re not familiar with. $?

Late night, someone (???) is DJing Home Sweet Home after Drew. I’m just going to toss out there that it’s going to be the returning JT and friends, because I have no info and assume this makes sense. $3 cover.

SATURDAY:

Early live action at Secret Project Robot in Bushwick for the launch of the K-Holes new record. The show starting at 7:30 features the ‘holes, Call of the Wild, Hard Nips and DJs Kid Congo Powers and Micki Pellerano. $?

Over at Don Pedro, it’s Cinco de Mayo with a few folks who know how not to drink tequila (and do it anyway): Born Loose and the Blag Dahlia-admired Hookers (one of those ‘metal/punk’ bands we get frequent emails about). They’ll be doing it loud and proud, and in true Pedro style, the DOORS are at 10PM. How do you say “rager” in Spanish? $5?

On to the dancin’ parties:

It’s Flip City time once again at the Satellite Lounge on Havemeyer with DJs Jumpy and Big Sir. 60′s pop & garage 45s all night! FREE

Over in Mannahatta, find Eric Davidson wedged into HiFi in Alphabet City spinning the best rock’n'roll 45s on the island, even Prince’s “rockabilly” records if you ask nicely. 10PM-2AM FREE

DJ Mr Vacation spins everything from soul to Tropicalia to boogaloo at the Commodore in Williamsburg. Top tip: arrive around 2AM for the best dancing. FREE

Not confirmed: Punk/glam band & DJ night Glammdammit is on the schedule for Grand Victory, but we haven’t heard anything. Let us know, will ya?

That’s all the time we have this week folks. Be sure to check back Sunday for Drew’s rundown of your early week!

SHIMMY

This blog is late and I gots a raging case of crazy bleeding brain disease brought on by bourbon. So let’s not waste time and let me tell you what you should be doing with your crazy ass tonight and tomorrow evening. The midweek is for lovers, haven’t you heard?

Wednesday May 2nd

Don’t you love it when an old party rises from the grave? If even for just one night and one night only it’s the return of Miss Jilly’s party Glad All Over, a fun fest featuring performances by her grungy punk band The Lovely, along with Patrick Salt Ryan and heavy psych band Street Smells, amongst others! Special guest DJ’s and retarded drink specials are in order. All this! at Tammany Hall on Orchard Street in the city. 8pm doors…cover?

Two personal faves of mine – The closest thing you’ll get to seeing Shocking Blue in this day, the psych pop band Persephonee’s Bees and psychotic fuzzed out garage punk band (returning from a long hiatus) The Caterpillers are kicking off a bill tonight at Bushwick party space Big Snow Buffalo Lodge, playing at 9 and 9:45, respectively. The other bands on the bill are a little too “indie” for my taste and probably yours, but I can certainly vouch for these two. Doors at 8pm, $5 cover…

As for the rest of the evening, it’s the regular weekly DJ spins:

*Mr. Fine Wine and his legendary 60′s soul and R&B party at Botanica

* Matt Hollywood at Local 138 (I THINK??? Seeing as The Brian Jonestown Massacre were at The Austin Psychfest only a few days ago I cannot confirm)

*Grace of Spades, Sweet V & Maddie Ruthless spinning roots, reggae & dancehall classics at Williamsburg cool spot The Brooklyn Stable

*SOMEONE at Motor City, though I believe the return of New York Night Train as we know it is imminent…

*SOMEONE and the Smoke Machine playing rock and roll at St. Jerome while Ashley Moree pours poison…

All that stuff starts at 10 and is as free as a bird…

Thursday April 3rd

The legendary Waldos are celebrating their 30th anniversary tonight at Bowery Electric, with many members of the band past and present performing on stage for the people…there’s a pretty good chance this will be sold out but hey, now you know it’s happening. 8pm doors…

A bill of gritty, modern soul this evening at Brooklyn Bowl: James Chance headlines with his new band James Chance and the JC’s, along with bossa beat inspired chanteuse Evi Antonio and punked out, distorted soul group The Immaculates. Mr. Fine Wine DJ’s this soiree in one of the best sounding rooms in town…8pm doors, $10 bones to get in

What’s this, a decent underground rock show at Mercury Lounge? Get the fuck out! Weird Rivers, Habibi, Total Slacker and Night Manager rock the joint, in that order from 7pm. $8 cover, and your ticket purchase gets you into a super secret rooftop keg afterparty where all the cool kids will be…

Retard Strength is the name of a new DJ night at newish bar on the Southside of Williamsburg called The Flat and stars Nick Gazin, Alix Brown and Will Berman from Bosco Delrey and Melissa Scaduto as your trouble makers. All kinds of rock and roll spun, I’d gather. 9pm kickoff, no cover…

Mr. Robinson and BamaLama Mike are at Heather’s in the city spinning soul and R&B from the late 50′s and 60′s this evening, I believe starting around 8 and also for no cover…

Agent Jay, Bunny Punch and friends hold down with old school reggae and dub at Otto’s Shurnken Head for their weekly hang Move Your Mule from 10pm till close, no cover…

That’s what I’ve got…check back here Friday afternoon for Shimmy’s guide to your fucked up weekend!

Stay Gold, Pony Boy… Captain Heartlock

Alriiiiight! I managed to not fuck up this weeks post! I know you were all very concerned with my absence and your lives weren’t quite the same without my half ass write up, but never fear! I am back and worse than ever! Ok now its time for to talk about all the crap that’s going on today.

Sunday April 29th

Today marks the day of your last opportunity to see a show at Lakeside Lounge before it closes its doors for good within the next 48 hours. Fortunately with the bad comes some good and due to such shitty circumstances it has brought The Underthings together to play there tonight at 7PM. So be sure to go there and party your ass off at one of the best bars in New York for possibly the last time. Well, unless you go there tomorrow.

For those of you who can’t handle a whopping 12 inches and you’re just not satisfied with a scrawny 7 inches, maybe you should waddle your fat ass to GowANUS and hit up the Bell House for THE BIG TEN INCH and find yourself just the right size! Hosted by the one and only Boogaloo Omnibus and kicks off at 5PM! They’ll also be ordering pizza around 7PM apparently. WOOO PIZZA PARTY!

Apparently there is some 1960s poppy garagey band playing at B.B. Kings today. The Left Bankes? Pioneers of baroque pop? Whatever the hell that is. Nothing I’m really familiar with. I know you’re all probably cringing seeing that this is at B.B. Kings, but that place actually isn’t so bad. I went there for the first time about 7 months ago and had a surprisingly good time. They had some DJ there actually playing some really good music. However, I felt like I was getting raped every time I bought a beer, but whatever…its midtown. It goes with the territory. Fuckin’ $7 Coronas…

Now onto the regular stuff with Andy Maltz from Littler Killers/Underthings and Dave the Spazz from WFMU DJing at Union Pool from 10PM till 2AM spinning killer 50s & 60s shit.

Monday April 30th
