WEDNESDAY, February 24

The bimonthly homage-rock party COPYCAT at OTTO'S SHRUNKEN HEAD has yet another winner tonight with a tribute to the real fucking king of rock and roll, CHUCK BERRY. Doing honors are the scuzzy glammer punks THE DIRTY SHAMES, the slickers of CHARLIE and the CRYBABIES and an all-star band THE NADINES, which features members of MAD JUANA, LOVE PIRATES and THE BOWERY BOYS. Host and Impresario DJ XEROX is joined by none other than the Boogaloo Omnibus PHAST PHREDDIE. Duck walk over to 14th and Ave. B for zero dollars cover and cheap tasty strong drinks.

Still in the City? Check out Jungle Jim, currently of my new fave evil creep-garage band Twin Guns is Djing in the Lower East side at ST. JEROME on 155 Rivington. It's Jungle Jim's Dance Party! He promises "lots of Mersey Beat, Rhythm & Blues, 60's Garage,Psych, Glam and Soul!!" and I am inclined to believe him. No cover! Should kick off around 10 till close...

But wait, there's more for city folks, in the form of Wednesday institutions MR. FINE WINE at Botanica's and NEW YORK NIGHT TRAIN with Jonathan Toubin at Motor City, but of course!

But wait, there's more! Fuck the city, you say? Your call. But a BIG tip of the hat to a new party in Williamsburg: SAND - Obscure Garage Rock & Finer Grades of Nuggest and Pebbles at The Cove, 108 N. 6th btw. Berry and Whythe - Dave A. and Matt Robson (of shimmer psych band THE HIDDEN RATIO) provide the aforementioned styles of tunes, psychedelic light and video projections and the promise to reclaim the spot formerly known as HUGGS (BLECCCH!) from the douche race (I wish them Good Luck - the place went from cheesey hipster dive to unpopulated gay bar to closed for renovation in light speed)! This will be a bi-monthly party on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. Godspeed, good sirs.
THURSDAY February 25th

If you don't know now you know - the real big to-do tonight is Detroit's finest, THE DIRTBOMBS, with the Loco Borricua GaragePunk sensations DAVILLA 666 at THE KNITTING FACTORY. The show's supposed to be free, but if you haven't already RSVPed for this who knows what your chances are. But! You can always hang out at the (very VERY cool) bar on the other side of the joint and peer through the glass window to the live room while eating tasty little samosas and throwing back Tecate...how I love that place and how Brooklyn needed it.

Over at DON PEDRO, where I left part of my brains last weekend, call if you find it, there'll be a whole lot of jingle jangle tremolo rolling through when THE GIRLS at DAWN, with their cute, charming girl-group harmonies and druggy guitars, and THE BEETS with their neo-doo-wop stomp and dirge. They're joined by THE PEACE KILLERS and it's rumored that Davilla 666 MAY just show up late night style for a secret performance - but don't take it from me. Take it from MySpace! HA HA HA HA, what's that?

Over in the City, smiling DAVE READY of SORCERESS is guest Djing for The NYC Rolling Stones Party, where they drop all kinds of known jams, obscurities, covers, inspirations and rip offs of the English band that, along with Captain America, Ronald Reagan, Ronald McDonald and Dr. Manhattan, helped defeat the Russians. This happens at Belmont Lounge, 117 E. 15th St.

Making a rare Thursday spinning appearance at the party he himself started at Enids in Greenpoint BK is Lord JONATHAN TOUBIN for the PUNK-Y THURSDAY THUMP. Danceable Garage and Punk (and if suckers can't dance to rock and roll that's THEIR problem!) is the order of the evening" what mystical wonders shall he extract from his magical case o' 45's? Oh the wonders of the world never cease to mystify, delight and terrify.

Be Good and Keep your Noses Clean, Babies!
Captain Heartlock OUT!

One busy, busy week.

This weekend is on fire
but try to stay focused,
'cause this week is real busy too.

Monday

A couple of free shows tonight. The Studio at Webster Hall hosts a show headlined by The Girls at Dawn. Can't vouch for the other bands, but it's free, so just show up late. Speaking of late... The Reverend Vince Anderson's residency is still going strong at Union Pool. Starts at 11pm.

Tuesday

This month's Underclass Revue at Bowery Electric is going a little nuts. The show features psycho-billy from The Arkhams and The Hydes, plus the old-school rock-n-roll of Charlie and the Crybabies. Looks like a $6 cover for this one. Also on the agenda for fans of funk: The London Souls bring their funk/punk sound to Mercury Lounge for a three-week residency starting today. $10 cover for that one (it's the Mercury Lounge, you see...)

Also on the calendar is a Brooklyn tradition, an institution, a standard of excellence, and many things, but definitely not a surprise... it's Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless! Featuring DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

For the second Copycat of this month The Sweet Ones and Guitar Bomb pay tribute to the music of Neil Young. DJ Xerox and DJ Shimmy (of GaragePunkNYC fame!) spin cover tunes all night. Aside from all the covers, no cover.

Also on the agenda: DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas; New York Night Train Wednesdays at Motor City Bar with weekly guest DJs spinning punk, rock, punk rock, and all things loud; and Mr. Fine Wine of WFMU spinning Soul music at Botanica. All three are free.

Thursday

A couple of shows tonight. The Demands play a free, early show at the Lakeside Lounge. The Othermen and The Electric Mess headline a bill over at The Bowery Electric. Let's call it The "The" Party. The 'The "The" Party' cover is $8.

A week of fuzzy things.

Have you RSVPed yet?
It is "strictly required"
and strictly enforced by
a one-eyed gorilla bouncer
with bad teeth.

Monday

At 200 Orchard (I think that's their website) in Manhattan it is time for a Glad All Over!!! party with The Rats, Des Roar, and DJ Charly Manson. And it's free!!!

Over in Brooklyn, the Rev. Vince Anderson and His Love Choir continue their Monday evening residency at Union Pool. Starts at 11pm, also no cover, and what it lacks in exclamation points it will surely make up for in fervor.

Tuesday

Tonight's special is... Hot Dog! (same special we had last week) at Bar Matchless. Featuring DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and pretty much whatever they want because they are unstoppable! No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Not its usual week or its usual music, CopyCat hosts a night of Sesame Street covers (!!!) with bands Whooping Crane, Anna Copa Cabanna and the MG5, and Madame Robot and the Lust Brigade. With DJ Xerox and his clone (unconfirmed) DJ Larry Red spinning cover songs until bedtime. Plus: furry costumes, special cupcakes (no, not that kind), and even more surprises in store (just not from eating the cupcakes). The cover is not one of them: it's free.

Wednesday night is DJ night in NYC. DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B over at Savalas in Brooklyn. In Manhattan at Motor City Bar it is time for New York Night Train Wednesdays, where guest DJs play punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Botanica where Mr. Fine Wine will spin his favorite Soul grooves. Hell, they even got two of 'em at CopyCat. All of these DJ nights are free.

Thursday

One big show tonight: Jack Oblivian and The Tennessee Tearjerkers along with Mannequin Men at Bruar Falls. Free, but you must RSVP. Anyone else feel like they might just be going to this one? Yeah, me too.

Marcus

This episode of GPNYC is brought to you by the number zero, which is how much every single show and DJ night costs this week. Nice!

Merry Christmas... Eve! (this post only covers Mon-Thurs)

Have you seen these men?
Catch them at Otto's on Wednesday.
You may find it rewarding.

Monday

Ah, for once a little competition for your DJ dollar on Monday night. DJs Jahna and Timmy T will be over at Lucky Strike in Manhattan spinning (insert musical style here). Okay, I have no clue what kind of music they DJ (and I really wish someone would tell me...), but they are on the calendar so I guess Shimmy thinks they're good. As a less novel option, DJ Knifefight will be spinning all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar in Brooklyn. No cover, free pool and "drink specials all night", starting at 10.

Edit: And more... DJs Brenda Brand and Ash Lee spin "good old fashioned rock-n-roll" at Macri Park in Brooklyn starting at 10. Open vodka bar from 11-midnight too.

Tuesday

Hey you know what? There's this thing called Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. Maybe you've heard of it? They've got DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Not going to work tomorrow? No family/they hate you? Then stay out late at one of the following entertaining musical events:

CopyCat! covers night returns to Otto's Shrunken Head. This week featuring Thee Borders, LoveStruck, and the band formerly known as "much, much more" who are now called Captain Ronzo's Thirsty Christmas (more memorable, yes?) I'm guessing they'll cover Christmas songs. Allan Dias and DJ Xerox keep the cover songs flowing between sets.

In the DJ domain, we've got DJ Reverend Vince spinning Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. New York Night Train Wednesdays returns to (or never left?) Motor City Bar with guest DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Once again they will be giving away whichever records they play all night! Last but not least, Mr. Fine Wine spins fine Soul music at Botanica. Everything on Wednesday is free.

Yes, everything.

Thursday

Still got money to burn? Go roast a chestnut over it or something.

Whaddya expect, a Christmas miracle? Ain't nuthin on Thursday.

Just mentally edit out the ice and snow.

The charming young men of Wellington Ladies' Welfare League
headline at Don Pedro on Thursday.
Don't they look warm?

Monday

DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. No cover, free heated pool (you wish... free billiards), starts at 10.

Tuesday

Well now here's something a little different. Over at Goodbye Blue Monday in Brooklyn, Legs McNeil will give a free reading from his new book "I Slept With Joey Ramone". Mr. Neil is the founder and editor of Punk magazine, so he might be serious, or at least really entertaining. I'm going to mentally edit out the slideshow, though.

As always you can and should check out Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Hopefully it's time once again for CopyCat at Otto's Shrunken Head. I say hopefully because one band canceled. We know that The Siberians and DJ Xerox will be there. Anyone want to volunteer to be the "special guests"? No cover.

Once again Wednesday is the day for free DJ nights. In Brooklyn, DJ Reverend Vince will spin Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. In Manhattan you can head on over to Motor City Bar for New York Night Train Wednesdays, featuring DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Mr. Fine Wine spinning his best Soul grooves at Botanica (in Manhattan).

Thursday

Finally, time for some rock-n-roll! Journey to deepest darkest Greenpoint (namely Coco66, a block from the Greenpoint G stop) Thursday night to catch LoveStruck, The Dirty Shames, Humboldt Fog and Fuck Fuck (a band which I refuse to Google). Or head on over to the Center of the Universe (aka Don Pedro) for Punk Rawk with WLWL, Foster Care and Gimmehead (not, even, thinking about Googling that one). No clue how much either show costs, but they should both be good.

And more... The hardest-workin' band in soul business, Nouvellas play their latest "last show of the year" at Mercury Lounge where they're opening for British folk-blues singers Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs. And over at Enids, this week's Thursday Night Thump features recently married celebrity(-ish) DJ couple Josh Styles and Sophie Thunders.

As an alternative to listening to Christmas carols all week...

The Specific Heats bring their garage-psych sound and
their Thanksgiving dinner to Bruar Falls on Tuesday
because even poultry deserves its 15 minutes of fame.

Monday

Glad All Over! hosts a show at Bowery Electric featuring the (cheese-inspired?) heavy rock of Humboldt Fog and the crunchy-like-a-cracker psych-rock of Whooping Crane, with DJ Lupe Loop spinning the platters. Sounds delicious. Not sure how much it will cost, and no the show does not start at 6pm like it says on someone's MySpace calendar (more like 9pm, which is to say, 10pm).

Also on the agenda, DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. Great music, convenient location, free pool all night, and no cover. It all starts at 10pm (which is to say, 9pm, at least the last time I was there).

I saw a webpage for a show this weekend which said that the show "starts at 9pm, doors at 12pm"*. Have we forgotten how time works, folks?

Tuesday

The Bowery Electric has another good show tonight featuring Organs, Love Pirates and Kelle Calco. Sorceress is probably not on the bill, unless perhaps the show was double-booked? That has been known to happen. Their show this weekend featured a comedian in between two of the bands Maybe this time there will be a contortionist or magician or human floor or something?

Did we mention that the Specific Heats are headlining at Bruar Falls? Not so sure about the other bands, but it's a free show, so check 'em out.

As always, Hot Dog! is at at Bar Matchless on Tuesdays. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late. Oh, and it's our friend Tara's 30th birthday party, so you might be able to mooch some free cake.

Wednesday

Time once again for CopyCat at Otto's Shrunken Head. Not sure what they're covering this week, but for the low low price of $0 you get to catch The Bowery Boys and Sousalves. DJ Xerox spins cover songs all night. Oh, and there's free pumpkin pie "while supplies last" (you know it's the holidays when people start offering you dessert everywhere).

If you're looking for a DJ, have you ever come to the right night. DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. Motor City Bar hosts its traditional Thanksgiving celebration called New York Night Train Wednesdays, a night of punk, rock, and other loud musical offerings. And of course there's Mr. Fine Wine at Botanica spinning his finest Soul grooves (you know, the ones on his records).

Thursday

It's Thanksgiving, so go hang with your family!

If your family happens to like going out and partying while listening to Punk Rock, Rockabilly and more (and that don't mean Christmas carols, folks) then may we suggest the No Thanks-Giving party at Bruar Falls with DJs Just Derek and Seanzi Dirtbag. That's where Mommy and I will be. As an alternative, Jonathan Toubin is DJing Thursday Night Thump this week at Enid's, where they have a wonderful apple pie (and some tasty beats no doubt).

Marcus

* By the way, 12pm is actually noon. Yeah, come on in nine hours early to have a "few" drinks before the show. Not sure if that was a little bit of stupidity or a huge heapin' pile of audacity...

Repeat after me: ZZ

Williamsburg hipsters: BEHOLD YOUR FUTURE!
CopyCat covers ZZ Top this week.

Monday

DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. It's a dingy little bar, but the music is superb. Also, free pool all night (though there is a line, of course). No cover.

Also on Monday, the Reverend Vince Anderson and the Love Choir continue their gospel-blues residency at Union Pool. It's a free show which starts late (11pm) and ends late (2am!)

Tuesday

I think you know what's coming: Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Time for Copycat once again, this week with a tribute to ZZ Top. Time to let your facial hair down and rock out with (the band) Cheap SunglasseZZ (winner of our "band name of the month" award), The Unpronounceable, and your host for the evening, DJ Xerox. Oh, and it's free!

Also on the agenda, Motor City Bar hosts New York Night Train Wednesdays with punk/rock/hard/loud music all night. No cover. Then of course there's Mr. Fine Wine at Botanica spinning his favorite Soul grooves. Also no cover.

Thursday

Okay, we got nuthin' for Thursday. There will surely be someone DJing at Enid's (edit: it's Katherine Tabor and Alix Brown of Golden Triangle), and possibly at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, but we're not sure who or what kind of music. (Edit: also, The Spits are playing a free show at Bruar Falls.)

Marcus

Nothing but free stuff this week? What, y'all don't want to compete with ZZ Top? Don't forget to send us your shows!

Breathing room

LoveStruck, The Othermen and My Happy Gun
conjure the spirit of Lux Interior
through human sacrifice (and music).

All of the PR guys are gone. All of the label guys are gone. All of the hipster tourists are gone. All related signs of the Apocalypse have abated. And apparently most of the bands are taking a break. It's a slow week for garagepunk once again.

Monday

There's nothing on the calendar for Monday, but if you're a fan the Rev. Vince Anderson and his Tom Waits/Dr. John-esque blues stylings, and can't wait until Thursday, he is playing a free late (11pm) show at Union Pool.

Tuesday

It's Tuesday night. You know that that means!

...

For the two or three of you who don't know what that means, it's time for Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

This must be the Halloween edition of CopyCat, 'cause it's a tribute to the recently deceased Lux Interior and his legendary band The Cramps. Catch his rockabilly disciples LoveStruck and The Othermen and gothic-flavored rockers My Happy Gun as they play their favorite Cramps songs and their other favorite songs... their own! Oh, and that DJ Shimmy guy is DJing along with DJ Xerox.

If that's not up your alley there is more free stuff Wednesday night. Motor City Bar hosts New York Night Train Wednesdays, its usual Wednesday punk/rock/hard stuff night. Botanica features Mr. Fine Wine's night of classic Soul grooves.

Thursday

Krewe de Soul hosts a benefit for the Abeona House child discovery center in New Orleans at The Bell House. Some great garagepunk bands including The Shalitas and The Mighty Fine and Les Sans Culottes are on the bill. The bill also features The High & Mighty Brass Band, Rev. Vince Anderson, Vic Thrill and Tunde Adebimpe ("of TV on the Radio", which may be a genre at this point).

Now here's something a little different: New York Night Train is hosting its Soul Clap! Dance Off party on a Thursday and in New Jersey. It'll be at Maxwell's (surprise!)

Last minute addition: it looks like The Othermen are playing Don Pedro on Thursday with WLWL, Foster Care, Labretta Suede and The Motel 6.

Marcus

This weekend, it's Halloween deja-vu as we set our clocks back while we're still out partying. Extra-long party night. Nice.

My shortest post ever.

Whooping Crane covers Sweet at Otto's this Wednesday.

Last week was crazy, next week is CMJ. In between... we're all sleeping in? This week is extra dead. Dead, buried, forgotten, disinterred and stood up in a museum. A good week to think about your Halloween costume.

If we hear about anything else, we will definitely update this blog post.

Tuesday

Hot Dog! is reliable once again, thank you. DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock and Punk at Bar Matchless. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

It's time once again for Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head. This week, a tribute to The Sweet with Whooping Crane and The Vondelles. With DJ Xerox spinning the cover tunes. The show's free, but do bring a few bucks for the bands por favor.

Going a whole week without a show at Don Pedro? Inconceivable! About as likely as winning a land war in Asia. Sure enough they came through at the last minute: tonight they've got Boysen Girls, Georgiana Starlington, 7 Ton Hand, Black On Brown, and Ghost Dad. No cover!

Motor City Bar hosts New York Night Train Wednesdays, its regular punk/rock/hard stuff night. Botanica has Mr. Fine Wine's night of classic Soul grooves. Both are no cover.

Thursday

One more show... the The Raveonettes are at Webster Hall on Thursday.

That's all folks! Not much to this week, but come back next week for a much longer post about shows like this and this.

Wau what a week!

The Above (see Tuesday) at Union Pool

Monday

Okay, the the official GaragePunkNYC calendar has nothin' for Monday. However, the Almost GaragePunk calendar (which I just pulled out of my ass) has something on it. Anyway, I'm really sick of trying to come up with new ways to say "nothing's happening", so here's something.

Anna Copa Cabanna will be doing an "unplugged" show at Zebulon starting at 8pm. Not sure if that's just music or music and dancing, but the show is definitely free. Monday is also the last day of the Coney Island Rockabilly Festival. Not sure when the music starts, but something or other starts at 2pm. This also seems to be free.

Tuesday

The last Hullabaloo! was so awesome they decided to throw another a mere four days later. Head on over to Don Pedro Tuesday night at catch Spanish (yes, from Spain) rockers Wau y Los Arrrghs!!! along with local boys The Above (see above) and the local boys and girls in Foster Care (despite the fact they look too old for that sort of thing). With DJs Charly Manson and Pete Solvenly.

Just because three-quarters of the Hot Dog! DJs will be at Don Pedro doesn't mean it ain't happening. It's happening this and every week at Bar Matchless. Yes, even after the Apocalypse there will be cockroaches with funny haircuts and pointy shoes going to Bar Matchless for this thing. Featuring DJs spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B, and 2-for-1 drinks. From 8 till late, no cover.

Wednesday

Wau y Los Arrrghs!!! are! still! here! Wednesday night they'll be at Bar 9. Also featuring: salsa tasting night. Yes, really. At least the band gets top billing. I mean here, not on Bar 9's website. Apparently we're a bit more excited about these guys than they are, but if you missed 'em on Tuesday, this is your second chance.

Wednesday is also the night for Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head. This week they're going waaaay back with tributes to Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly and Otis Redding. We have also been promised a "special surprise guest" instead of the usual mundane surprise guest.

What else? Well, if you're suffering from excessive stability of the head and neck then hit Motor City Bar for the the punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. If on the other hand you prefer your evenings chill, check out Botanica for a night of soul grooves spun by Mr. Fine Wine of WFMU. Both fun, both free.

Thursday

Portland garage rockers Nice Boys visit our favorite Cake Shop on Thursday. They headline a great bill which includes the psych-flavored Birds of Avalon (from Raleigh), Brimstone Howl (from Omaha), and the geographically indecisive Baby Shakes.

As always you have more options for Thursday. You can catch Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, and Thursday Thump, an evening of Punk, Glam, Psych rock (and basically whatever the DJs like) at Enids.

Marcus

...put a picture of The Above on this post just to tell that one stupid joke. Really.

Heavy responsibilities

You ever have one of those weekends when you're just having so much fun and getting so little sleep and you get exhausted and can't manage to "fulfill" your "responsibilities" like updating that blog "you"* help out with and you really don't want to do it but you feel like you'd be letting your friends down?

Welcome to the late Monday edition of the GaragePunkNYC blog. I assure you, next week I'll start writing this thing sooner.

Monday

There is nothing on the calendar for Monday. Through 2010. Nowadays Monday is like the afterparty for a funeral. Personally I suggest that you stay home and post to our web forum to stave off the boredom. Think of it as traveling to a distant and magical land which few other living souls have ever seen...

Tuesday

Hot Dog! Yes, it's at Bar Matchless once again this week. DJs spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B, 2-for-1 drinks, good bar food, 8pm. But the best part: it's actually fucking happening.

Wednesday

All right folks, remember that free Nouvellas show which got rained out a few weeks back? It's this Wednesday, at the McCarren Park blacktop, at 7pm, followed by a showing of the movie Fame. Weather permitting, because of course if it rains there's a chance that someone** will be hit by lightning, so the show will be delayed again.

Now, that's the only show at 7pm on Wednesday, but if you can be patient then you will have many options. There's the second anniversary of Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head starting at 10pm. It's a night of cover songs performed by Guitar Bomb, The Sweet Ones, and DJ Allan Dias. Then we've got Georgiana Starlington and their psych-western sound at Bruar Falls. Also on the bill are This Frontier Needs Heroes, Feather & Folly, and DJ Aaron (of LiveFastDie). Strangely, "psych-western" is not a bad description of Spindrift either, though they're less country and less mellow than GS. They'll be at Union Pool tonight with Hopewell and The Runaway Suns.

Your afterparty options are as follows: Motor City Bar hosts the punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays, and Botanica is the backdrop for Mr. Fine Wine and his classic Soul grooves. That is all.

Thursday

If you just can't get enough western psych rock, Spindrift is back at Cake Shop, this time with The Vandelles Electric Tickle Machine and Werewolves.

Not your*** thing? Then have some fun at Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, or at Thursday Thump, an evening of Punk, Glam and Psych rock at Enids. Or you can stay home posting to our web forum maybe?

* By which I mean me, obviously.

** By which I mean Dennis, obviously.

*** By which I mean you, obviously.

Let's be honest, sleep is fuckin' awesome.

The picture above is amazingly similar to what I actually look like most Sunday mornings.

Sometimes I wonder why I try so hard to pitch these shows. It's music, right? Who doesn't like that? And if you didn't like this particular type of music (or want to see your band's name mentioned outside of your own MySpace page) then you probably wouldn't be reading this blog in the first place.

The only thing I can figure is that I'm trying to convince you to stay up late instead of going to sleep. Now that's important, because sleep is really tempting, I know. You lie down and slip into dreamland and then hours later you wake up feeling really good. It's like getting wasted except you wake up feeling really good. Cheaper too.

You know what? I can't win. Just stay home and sleep. What's that you say? The A/C is broken and it's 120 degrees in your apartment? Well then, all of the venues below feature cold drinks and (in most cases) working A/C! Even if you do sweat it will be in the presence of cute sweaty people of the opposite sex and/or same sex (whatever floats 'yer boat). So c'mon out!

Monday

Head on over to Bowery Electric Monday night to catch psych-rockers Whooping Crane and the last performance (for a "long time") by The Jadewalkers. The Jadewalkers ripped it up at Otto's last week, so if you missed 'em, or if you will miss 'em, this is your last chance to see them anytime soon. Oh, and the show is FREE, so unless you really desperately need to spend the evening de-humidifying your underwear or whatever, go go go!

Tuesday

There's a bill at the Trash Bar which gets awfully indie near the end, but Buzzcocks/Stiff Little Fingers pop-punk sound of GeTSeT ("at 8pm") and/or the acoustic blues sound of Jack Buf ("at 9pm") might just be up your alley. And nobody's complaining about the open PBR and well drink bar from 8-9 with admission!

Just like every other Tuesday, you could also check out Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless (8pm to late). No cover, 2-for-1 drinks, good food, and different DJs every week spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B. Oh, and you can play chess in back too. Just don't make any bets (I hear that some of those guys are real chess sharks).

Wednesday

The week gets a little busier on Wednesday. We've got Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head once again this week. Little Black Egg (feat. members of The Rats) are doing a tribute to The Damned, Action Camp will perform (but they don't sound like The Damned) and DJ Xerox will spin cover songs (including covers of Damned songs?) I'm not sure if there's a theme this time or not. It's FREE though, so you can't lose!

Back in Brooklyn, Your 33 Black Angels headline at Bruar Falls. The bill is a little folk-y overall, but when these guys pull out the heavy guitar riffs and organ sounds (performed on a synth, admittedly) they sure do rock.

Also tonight, Mr. Fine Wine spins classic Soul downstairs at Botanica in the City and Motor City Bar hosts New York Night Train Wednesdays with special guest DJs spinning garage rock, punk, and who knows what else.

Thursday

Come visit lovely Brooklyn, New York! Tour our historic apartments and ancient ruins (which are also apartments)! Enjoy the local nightlife! Mingle with the locals at Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn! Experience Thursday Thump, a night of Punk, Glam and Psych rock at Enids! It's the perfect vacation: a free one! (No cover for either DJ night).

So many ways to get censored on this theme. Notice that we are not going that way. All right?

And the venue of tonight's SECRET SHOW is...

... Don Pedro, which will host the Mannequin Men and Davilla 666 tonight. Details will follow shortly.

Monday

Okay here are the details (well that was quick): tonight the Mannequin Men, Davila 666, WLWL and The Choke are playing a secret show at Don Pedro. Go there! Afterwards (and also before) go to Double Down Saloon to catch DJ Emma Vikingskull spinning great pub rock 'till late. Go there too!

Tuesday

We are in fact the #1 result on Goggle for the phrase "Thank you reliable Hot Dog!" So anyway, tonight Bar Matchless hosts the reliable Hot Dog!, a weekly night of 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Garage Rock and more. 2-for-1 drinks, no cover, and a whole bunch of DJs you probably know, have seen around, and/or lusted after.

Wednesday

Okay now Copycat is doing a Kinks tribute night at Otto's. Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade headline, Tom Ward joins the party later in the evening, and DJ Xerox will keep ya' going at all points in-between.

Also check out Mr. Fine Wine downstairs at Botanica in the City. It's a nice mellow venue, quiet enough to talk (loudly, but ya' don't hafta yell), and great Soul music. Also this and every week, Motor City Bar hosts New York Night Train Wednesdays with special guest DJs spinning garage rock, punk, and who knows what else. If you missed their anniversary party on Sunday (and you did, but I didn't, which is why this is being posted so late) then be sure to check that out. Muy loud, mucho fun!

Thursday

Not that we haven't seen plenty of reunions lately, but catching the Flamin' Groovies live is in a whole different category than most of 'em (that category: "worthwhile"). It'll be original members Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney backed by the A-Bones. The show tonight is at Maxwell's in New Jersey (they're in Brooklyn on Friday too, so we far-East-ers probably won't be dusting off our PATH passes just yet...)

This and every Thursday night check out Boogaloo Shampoo at Beauty Bar NYC. It's a FREE soul music dance party at Bushwick's hottest and probably only new venue (but it's really cool, so go). Also on the calendar, Thursday Night Thump will be back at Enids. Those of you who prefer Greenpoint or just plan to bar-hop, this is a great place to be.

Ugh, I'm going to beat up the next computer I see...

Help Juliet, Double Richman, Devo Imposters, and Stupidity

Instead of starting this post with my usual idiocy I really want to push the show on Tuesday at Bar Matchless. It's a fundraiser for Juliet Dostalek, the Bar Matchless bartender who was hit by a car last month. Please come! You can also donate via PayPal by sending a contribution to tulipsforjuleps@gmail.com

Monday

Captain Heartlock and Professor Z spin Garage Rock and Soul music at the Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly. Apparently you can mention "oz" to get $8 admission. That's $2 less than the usual cover, and lord knows that less cover is a big part of why you're there, so be sure to mention "oz"!

Tuesday

Check out a very special Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. This week it'll be a fundraiser for Bar Matchless bartender Juliet, who was in a terrible accident last month and needs help paying her continuing medical expenses. God Fires Man and other bands will be performing in the back room. As this is a fundraiser, there is a required minimum donation of $10. There will also be the mandatory raffle with prizes including the mandatory gift certificates, Yankees/Mets tickets, and at least one bigger prize. As always DJs will spin Garage Rock, Soul, R&B and the bartenders will serve 2-for-1 well drinks.

Also of note, Jonathan Richman (of Modern Lovers fame) starts a two-night stand at Bowery Ballroom. His music is all over the map, but includes plenty rock-n-roll. If you're in a dancin' mood instead, check out Lost & Found at Savalas for a free evening of dancing to Soul, Funk and Latin music.

Wednesday

If ya' missed him last night, Jonathan Richman plays at Bowery Ballroom again tonight. Also tonight, Copycat bring us Devo covers night at Otto's Shrunken Head. The Arkhams and Dead Phones perform as Devo, and DJ Xerox spins Devo covers, remixes, and other crazy stuff. The lucky people of New Jersey can also catch the wicked punk rock of M.O.T.O. and Midnight Creeps at Asbury Lanes.

In the mood for a free party? Then head to Manhattan and check out New York Night Train as its guest DJs spin Punk and Garage rock at the Motor City Bar. Or maybe you'd prefer to chill with Mr. Fine Wine as he spins Soul music at his weekly gig at Botanica.

Thursday

The mystery of the old Knitting Factory continues to grow as raunchy rockers Hunx & His Punx perform there Thursday night with Celtic-goth rockers Salem and Bounce rapper Sissy Nobby. It's the "Butt Magazine Party" (like Bust Magazine for men?) Everything nice and clear now? So anyway, for the slightly less adventurous, Sweden's Stupidity perform at Don Pedro "bar and lounge" (classy, huh?) with The Jadewalkers and The Siberians. All three bands exist somewhere in the garage-punk universe. Presented by How Swede It Is (punsters after my own heart!)

Brooklyn is also the epicenter of the garagepunk-dance-party universe Thursday night. Rock out to garage-punk, psych and glam at Thursday Night Thump at Enids! Sway to the sounds of Soul music at the Thursday Boogaloo Shampoo at Beauty Bar Brooklyn! Boogie down with Garage, Surf and Rockabilly music with Swimsuit Edition at Savalas! If you don't you are boring!

The nights are gettin' shorter. Better take advantage of every minute.

A slow week a'comin.

Perhaps it had to be this way. This week had to be dead so that next week can be undead. That's right folks, The Mummies aren't playing for another week and a half but the whole garagepunk community already seems to be marking time. In fact we were going to put up a Mummies countdown clock on this very site, but we all have tickets to different shows...

Or maybe everyone's going to see Art Brut? They're playing five gigs, one each night Monday through Friday, all at the Mercury Lounge. They're doing five gigs and The Mummies are only doing three. Capitalism fucks up once again.

Monday

Captain Heartlock and Professor Z return to their usual Monday gig spinning Garage and Soul at the Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly. If you're not up for that on Monday, then we cannot help you.

Tuesday

All right folks, if you're a fan of Art Brut then this it the night to see them, unless of course you bought the $50 five-night passes (yes this is a real thing). Opening on Tuesday are faux French rockers Les Sans Culottes. Be sure to show up early 'cause this will be your best chance to dance.

If for whatever reason you feel like skipping that show, why not check out Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless? No cover, 2-for-1 drinks and R&B, Garage Rock, Soul and 60s sounds. Or how about dancin' to Soul, Funk and Latin music at Lost & Found at Savalas.

Wednesday

Check out New York Night Train and their weekly guest DJs spinning Punk and Garage rock at the Motor City Bar, or Mr. Fine Wine as he returns to spin Soul music at his weekly gig at Botanica. Or both. You can go after seeing Art Brut! Or before! Or during!

What's this, a last minute addition? All Hell will break loose as CopyCat throws a Misfits tribute night at Otto's Shrunken Head. Featuring all-girl Misfits cover band Ghouls Night Out and New Jersey "toilet rock" (word of the day material?) band Slaw.

Thursday

Do ya' like the Soul music kids? 'Cause tonight you have options! DJs Mr. Robinson and Dos Platos will be spinning 50s, 60s and Soul music at Heathers (winners of the "most confusing website" award), and the Soul dance galore called Boogaloo Shampoo will be at the new Beauty Bar Brooklyn (not the one in Manhattan). If you'd rather dance to garage, surf and rockabilly music then check out Swimsuit Edition at Savalas. Or hey, why not rock out to punk, glam and psych rock at the Thursday Night Thump at Enids? So many options, and they're all free.

Next week: The Mummies, the Northside Festival, the Detriot Cobras, and a Hullabaloo! at Don Pedro. Next week: actually worth writing about.

It's finally time to see what your friends look like under their Winter outfits.

Nothing ends. Nothing ever ends. Not even weekends.

MONDAY

There won't be any Winter outfits on display when DJs Captain Heartlock and Professor Z spin Garage and Soul music at the Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly.

Still reading after that horrible joke, eh? Well good for you, because there's some really interesting stuff going on later this week, and I assure you that the writing gets much better after this...

TUESDAY

There are always places to go and move 'yer feet on a Tuesday night. Several fine DJs will take their record collection for a spin as Hot Dog! returns to Bar Matchless. 2-for-1 drinks and all the cutest folks in all of Greenpoint! DJ Phast Phreddie (aka the Boogaloo Omnibus) spins 60s Go-Go records at Barrette right on down there in Prospect Heights. We hear there will be go-go dancers (Go-Go music seems to attract those types). Oh, and let's not forget about Lost & Found Soul DJ Night at Savalas.

WEDNESDAY

I personally have heard at least two bands cover "TV Eye" this month alone. If I wanted to hear it a third time then I might just head on over to Otto's Shrunken Head on Wednesday for Copycat. This time around they're featuring the musical catalog of one Ignatious "Iggy" Pop. Live performances by Soldiers & Idiots and Bowery Boys (also idiots?), with DJs Xerox and Allen Dias (clearly idiots), and loads of drunken karaoke idiots all of whom probably sing better than Iggy nowadays.

Also on Wednesday, Mr. Fine Wine returns to Botanica to spin Soul music for your dancing pleasure. New York Night Train will once again bring guest DJs to Motor City Bar

THURSDAY

It ain't cheap ($15 plus a two overpriced drink minimum), but if you can afford it Joe's Pub is hosting a rare(-ish) performance by The Mighty Hannibal. Backed by members of The Sweet Divines, the evening will also include a preview of the documentary "Showtime!" about the life and times of the Mighty One himself and Mr. Fine Wine spinning the Soul music for your pleasure.

If that's not up your alley, you can always check out Boogaloo Shampoo at Beauty Bar, Thursday Night Thump at Enids, and Swimsuit Edition at Savalas. There is plenty of fun to be had by the impoverished on Thursday!

Sleep is for the weak end.

Marcus (just be glad I didn't put a picture of Dr. Manhattan up there)
