Week, Parts 1-3

Sorry, that part of the week is over.
It's Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.
You have to pretend to be be normal now.

Sunday

Start the evening with Awesome Color at the Market Hotel BUT BE WARNED... they're playing one of those shows "with their friends" which means that nobody else on the bill sounds anything like them. Check out the openers' MySpace pages first (Tyvek, Talk Normal, CSC Funk Band) and see if you like 'em before you decide when to start your evening (personally I kind of like CSC's stripped-down funk-jazz sound, but could do without the other two). Cover unknown. Seriously, nobody has the slightest clue how much it'll cost, it's not on anyone's MySpace, or on Todd P's site, or anywhere at all.

So anyway, our good pals Dave The Spazz and Andy Maltz will be spinning some good music over at Union Pool starting at 10pm. While they might play just about anything (at least anything you can dance to) they seem to prefer the music of the 50s and 60s, soul, and old-fashioned garage.

Monday

Two shows for ya' tonight. Humboldt Fog engulfs K&M in Brooklyn in fuzzed out rock-n-roll. That show is free and starts at 8pm, and ends "by" 10pm, which means that you can also catch the later show featuring The Reverend Vince Anderson. He and his Love Choir bring the sounds of Gospel, Blues and Soul to the holiest place in Brooklyn, Union Pool (much like God, it is everywhere this week). Starts at 11pm and also free.

Tuesday

Sick of all these choices? Well have we got the day for you! It's called Tuesday and is best known around these parts for Hot Dog!, a night of DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more at Bar Matchless. They've also got 2-for-1 drinks, which'll get you spinning by the end of the night. Starts at 9:44:23pm or some damn thing like that 10pm and there is no cover.

The Wooly Mammoth Emerges from the Wrong Side of his Icy Tomb

Love means never having to say "you terrify me".

Can you feel it, the thaw? Can you hear it, winter's retreat? Oh yeah, March on, wayward sons and daughters. Captain Heartlock here with your midweek mashup of "things to do" and "places to be" for discriminating hep-cats on the retro-rocker scene.

WEDNESDAY 3/3

Two Williamsburg, Brooklyn based DJ happenings of note:

DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch present
their monthly LIVING FOR KICKS party at Satellite Lounge (143 Havemeyer St and South 1st)a full-on smorgasbord of 60's garage, pop, psych and soul. Charlie Kong of Charlie and the Crybabies spins rockabilly, doo wop and other things that the greasers adore over at Rocky's outpost on the northside, Cyn Lounge on Bedford Ave and N.5th. Both these happenings are free at two affordable, dark (in a film noir kinda way) and low key spots that are perfect for taking the edge off your edge.

If it's live you desire, head on over to Don Pedro to catch the "Stoner Pop" stylings of HUMBOLDT FOG. Trippy bass lines and extravagant fuzz solos are waiting to steal your wallets. Should be on after 9pm and is yet another Lady Bree production...Do check out the lush psychedelia of THE HIDDEN RATIO, who kick off a night with fellow heads DEAD STARS and SUBMARINE BELLS at Union Pool, that old den of iniquity. I cannot confirm but I'd expect at least a $7 cover, being Union Pool and all. 30% less douche bag with your purchase on a Wednesday, to boot!

And of course, for the Manhattan side of life there's MR. FINE WINE and his rare delicious soul and r&b 45's at Houston Street's Botanica and JONATHAN TOUBIN and The New York Night Train at the one and only Motor City. Free, Free, Free - unlike your liver transplant...

THURSDAY 3/4

Big to-do over at the tripped out art-party space Secret Project Robot on Kent Avenue and River Street, on the Waterfront of Williamsburg: it's the 1 year anniversary party for Paul Dillon's PERFECT PRESCRIPTION party, promising an array of "Psych, ShoeGaze, Kraut and Space Rock" with psychedelic light show and live performances by fantastic psych-pop vagabonds THE RUNAWAY SUNS and other groups of the more shoegazey variety (FUXA, APOLLO HEIGHTS and SOREN WELL, amongst others). $5 bucks to blow your mind. DJ MOJO 2000 mans the decks into the night. Avast!

More Live: If someone invites you to "take a ride on a short bus", you take them up on it, mother: a louder and sleazier show is to be had at TRASH BAR on Grand St., Williamsburg - THE DEMANDS, GIRL TO GORILLA, THE VONDELLS, THE CRUSHER and THE RUBBER ROOM RATS, in that order from 8pm. Wowy Zowy! $6 cover with their infamous 8-9pm "open bar". The smell of tater-tots compels you!

Finally, if you find yourself in the East Village be sure to hit up Heathers (506 East 13th Street), one of the last cool places in the damn neighborhood, where Mr. Robinson, DosPlatos and BamaLama Mike will spin 50's and 60's pop, soul and doo-wop, fiercely yet lovingly.

Get out on the streets and make your choices known!

Stay Gold, Friends and Fiends...

Oweinama

Another scorching week.

I'm referring to the
music of course.
I wish my space
heater worked this well.

Monday

I believe that this is the first benefit for Haiti we've mentioned on GaragePunkNYC: Fresh Kills, Cerebral Ballzy and more perform at The Woods in Williamsburg. There is a $10 minimum donation which goes to the BSVAC Haiti rescue effort (I dare you to look up what that stands for).

200 Orchard hosts the debut of Twin Guns, featuring Andrea Sicco and Jungle Jim from My Happy Gun. We're not sure exactly what they sound like since the only actual song on their MySpace page is a cover of Rumble, but it should be rock-n-roll. If you liked My Happy Gun but wished they sounded more like Link Wray, then you are a very imaginative individual. If you'd like to see Humboldt Fog and The Othermen on the same bill, then Monday is an auspicious day to take a journey... to 200 Orchard (yes, I am plagiarizing fortune cookies now). Should be a good show, try the Peking Duck.

The Reverend Vince Anderson will once again be at Union Pool. That show is free and starts at 11pm.

Tuesday

The London Souls bring their funk/punk sound to Mercury Lounge again this week (we're just not crazy about the bands they keep getting paired with). The show starts at 10pm and admission is $10.

Once again Tuesday is the night for Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless featuring DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night... but I hear it starts at 9:45 this week? Is that true? Who came up with that number?

Wednesday

Not my job anymore. Yes folks, check back in on Wednesday for a post by a new contributer to GaragePunkNYC...

Get ready for a long New Years weekend.

The end of the "whatever it's called" decade.
The Naughts? I prefer "The Naught-ies".
But whatever it's called, it's over.

Note: this post is really, really likely to be updated as we hear about more New Year's Eve parties.

Monday

Snow again (supposedly). Warm 'yerself up at Art Land Bar where DJ Knifefight will be spinning all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll. No cover, free pool and drink specials all night starting at 10. And no competition, so go!

Tuesday

The Bowery Electric hosts a Gogol Bordello afterparty upstairs, but we strongly recommend heading downstairs to catch Whooping Crane, The Dirty Shames, Daddy Long Legs and The Bowery Boys. Show starts at 9pm and there's a free vodka bar from 9-10. $5 cover. And/or, head over to Lakeside Lounge to catch The Martinets for free at 9pm.

In Brooklyn, check out Trophy Bar for a "Birthday Blow-Out" with DJs Sophie Thunder, Boogaloo Omnibus and Billy Miller (of Norton Records/The A-Bones). It's a party for folks with birthdays between Dec. 24 and Jan. 1, but everyone is invited. Pretty sure there is no cover, but feel free to bring gifts (I do believe myrrh is traditional). Or you could just go to Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless where they'll have DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, starts at 8.

Wednesday

DJs and more DJs. DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. New York Night Train Wednesdays at Motor City Bar features guest DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Mr. Fine Wine spins fine Soul music at Botanica. And furthermore... DJs Gregg D and Dave Ready (of Sorceress) will spin glam, rock-n-roll and "teenage boogie" at St. Jerome's (the bar -- it's at 155 Rivington in Manhattan). There's supposed to be a special secret guest live performer at that last one. They're all free, so as long as you go, you can not go wrong.

Thursday

Yeah, there miiiight just be something happening this Thursday. But considering that you'll probably get charged a $5 cover just for stepping outside, you might want to plan ahead.

Our suggestions:

1. Don't plan on taking a cab anywhere.

a. Golden Triangle and Electric Tickle Machine at Glasslands Gallery. Also with DJ Thirwell, a "secret performance", and an open vodka bar from 9-10. $10 cover.

α (that's an "alpha" - all of our suggestions should be considered equal). Your 33 Black Angels,The Hoa Hoa's, Hollands, Hobsons Choice, Apollo Heights, akg's Humboldt Fog, and perhaps more at Don Pedro. $8 cover and free Colt 45 from 11-midnight. Served in champagne glasses. Okay, not really.

. The Detriot Cobras, The A-Bones and The Underthings at Mercury Lounge. Tickets are... $25 advance, $30 at the door. Oy vey!

$. The Subway Soul Club presents Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and Obits at The Bell House. DJs after the bands include the Boogaloo Omnibus (that guy again!) Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the door, though after the bands the cover drops to $5.

Edit: and more... DJ Jahna Rain spins funk and soul all night at The Lamp Post Bar and Grill in Jersey City. New York Night Train is throwing all-night parties at Cake Shop, Motor City Bar and Home Sweet Home. Covers range from $0 to $15, check out their website for more info. The Trash Bar is doing a punk rock New Years with Murphy's Law, No Redeeming Social Value, World War IX, Blackout Shoppers and Skum City. $12 cover includes an open bar from 8-9.

Marcus

PS. Anyone know the story behind all these open vodka bars? There's one every week lately, two this week. Did some company hire a really good rep or what? And also, how did Don Pedro get stuck with those little bottles of Colt 45?

Just mentally edit out the ice and snow.

The charming young men of Wellington Ladies' Welfare League
headline at Don Pedro on Thursday.
Don't they look warm?

Monday

DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. No cover, free heated pool (you wish... free billiards), starts at 10.

Tuesday

Well now here's something a little different. Over at Goodbye Blue Monday in Brooklyn, Legs McNeil will give a free reading from his new book "I Slept With Joey Ramone". Mr. Neil is the founder and editor of Punk magazine, so he might be serious, or at least really entertaining. I'm going to mentally edit out the slideshow, though.

As always you can and should check out Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Hopefully it's time once again for CopyCat at Otto's Shrunken Head. I say hopefully because one band canceled. We know that The Siberians and DJ Xerox will be there. Anyone want to volunteer to be the "special guests"? No cover.

Once again Wednesday is the day for free DJ nights. In Brooklyn, DJ Reverend Vince will spin Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. In Manhattan you can head on over to Motor City Bar for New York Night Train Wednesdays, featuring DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Mr. Fine Wine spinning his best Soul grooves at Botanica (in Manhattan).

Thursday

Finally, time for some rock-n-roll! Journey to deepest darkest Greenpoint (namely Coco66, a block from the Greenpoint G stop) Thursday night to catch LoveStruck, The Dirty Shames, Humboldt Fog and Fuck Fuck (a band which I refuse to Google). Or head on over to the Center of the Universe (aka Don Pedro) for Punk Rawk with WLWL, Foster Care and Gimmehead (not, even, thinking about Googling that one). No clue how much either show costs, but they should both be good.

And more... The hardest-workin' band in soul business, Nouvellas play their latest "last show of the year" at Mercury Lounge where they're opening for British folk-blues singers Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs. And over at Enids, this week's Thursday Night Thump features recently married celebrity(-ish) DJ couple Josh Styles and Sophie Thunders.

As an alternative to listening to Christmas carols all week...

The Specific Heats bring their garage-psych sound and
their Thanksgiving dinner to Bruar Falls on Tuesday
because even poultry deserves its 15 minutes of fame.

Monday

Glad All Over! hosts a show at Bowery Electric featuring the (cheese-inspired?) heavy rock of Humboldt Fog and the crunchy-like-a-cracker psych-rock of Whooping Crane, with DJ Lupe Loop spinning the platters. Sounds delicious. Not sure how much it will cost, and no the show does not start at 6pm like it says on someone's MySpace calendar (more like 9pm, which is to say, 10pm).

Also on the agenda, DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. Great music, convenient location, free pool all night, and no cover. It all starts at 10pm (which is to say, 9pm, at least the last time I was there).

I saw a webpage for a show this weekend which said that the show "starts at 9pm, doors at 12pm"*. Have we forgotten how time works, folks?

Tuesday

The Bowery Electric has another good show tonight featuring Organs, Love Pirates and Kelle Calco. Sorceress is probably not on the bill, unless perhaps the show was double-booked? That has been known to happen. Their show this weekend featured a comedian in between two of the bands Maybe this time there will be a contortionist or magician or human floor or something?

Did we mention that the Specific Heats are headlining at Bruar Falls? Not so sure about the other bands, but it's a free show, so check 'em out.

As always, Hot Dog! is at at Bar Matchless on Tuesdays. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late. Oh, and it's our friend Tara's 30th birthday party, so you might be able to mooch some free cake.

Wednesday

Time once again for CopyCat at Otto's Shrunken Head. Not sure what they're covering this week, but for the low low price of $0 you get to catch The Bowery Boys and Sousalves. DJ Xerox spins cover songs all night. Oh, and there's free pumpkin pie "while supplies last" (you know it's the holidays when people start offering you dessert everywhere).

If you're looking for a DJ, have you ever come to the right night. DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. Motor City Bar hosts its traditional Thanksgiving celebration called New York Night Train Wednesdays, a night of punk, rock, and other loud musical offerings. And of course there's Mr. Fine Wine at Botanica spinning his finest Soul grooves (you know, the ones on his records).

Thursday

It's Thanksgiving, so go hang with your family!

If your family happens to like going out and partying while listening to Punk Rock, Rockabilly and more (and that don't mean Christmas carols, folks) then may we suggest the No Thanks-Giving party at Bruar Falls with DJs Just Derek and Seanzi Dirtbag. That's where Mommy and I will be. As an alternative, Jonathan Toubin is DJing Thursday Night Thump this week at Enid's, where they have a wonderful apple pie (and some tasty beats no doubt).

Marcus

* By the way, 12pm is actually noon. Yeah, come on in nine hours early to have a "few" drinks before the show. Not sure if that was a little bit of stupidity or a huge heapin' pile of audacity...

Life goes on?

Yeah, it was a real fun Halloween. It's over now,
but the memories and scars will last a lifetime.
Also, the head trauma. That will last a lifetime too,
but at least it has a nice self-anesthetizing quality.

Monday

Here's something new: DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar on Grand Street in Williamsburg. It looks like they also have free pool and Happy Hour is all night. We may have to go check this out.

Here's something old: Captain Heartlock and Professor Z are back to spinning Garage and Soul music at Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly. Say you're there for the DJs and you'll get half-price admission ($5). They also have two-for-one drinks until 9.

Tuesday

First of all, go vote. Once you've done that, head on over to Bar Matchless to watch the World Series, or if that's over, then election night coverage. While there you may also enjoy Hot Dog!, featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Lots of stuff tonight. First of all, there will be a silent auction fundraiser for Bar Matchless bartender Juliet Dostalek at Root Studios (131 North 14th Street in Brooklyn). You may recall that she was in a car accident earlier this year. We know you're broke, but check it out anyway. The busier it looks, the more pressure to bid high.

Okay, enough with the public service messages... Humboldt Fog brings their fuzz rock sound to (you get one guess...) Don Pedro tonight. They're playing with (the band) Tight White Jeans, The Hydes, and Brick Mower.

Lotsa places to dance or just hang. In Brooklyn you've got your Living For Kicks at the Satellite Lounge with DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spinning everything good from the 60s, including Garage, Rocksteady, R&B and Soul. Then over in Manhattan at Motor City Bar you've got your New York Night Train Wednesdays where they play punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Botanica where Mr. Fine Wine will spin his favorite Soul grooves for youse. All three are free.

Thursday

At Heathers in Manhattan it's time for Mr. Robinson, DosPlatos and BamaLama Mike and their monthly 50's, 60's and Soul music night. Probably no cover, but we're not sure.

It's not on the calendar, but over at Beauty Bar Brooklyn DJ Rev. Vince (of Reverend Vince Anderson and his Love Choir) will spin Gospel, Soul, Disco, Funk and maybe some Hip-Hop. We hope he'll skip that last one. Perhaps that just means that he can be bribed to play "Baby's Got Back" (which is to say, he's broke). You'll have to ask him. This is also probably free.

Stress release time.

It is just me or has this month been really stressful? I don't just mean work and personal life stuff, I mean the music has been extra loud and crazy. The Brimstones yesterday, the show at Don Pedro the Saturday before, the show at Don Pedro the Saturday before that, the last few Jadewalkers shows... it has been a wild month!

Now I hereby declare that it is time to chill. Summer is ending. We're all slowing down a little bit. Time to sit back with a carefully placed ice pack or two and just enjoy life.

Monday

Yeah right. Monday and the last day of the month and you think people are putting on shows? If you actually have any money left go catch a movie or something.

Tuesday

Hot Dog!, get 'yer Hot Dog! here! This one's made of the finest ingredients: DJs spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B, 2-for-1 drinks, good bar food, and chess hustlers. As compared to real hot dogs, which just contain DJs and old chess pieces. This week and every week at Bar Matchless starting at 8.

Wednesday

All right, we finally know who will be playing at Don Pedro on Wednesday. The lineup will be: Organs, Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade, and Humboldt Fog (but not The Othermen).

If you're in Brooklyn and in the mood for even more variety, check out Living For Kicks at the Satellite Lounge. DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spin 60s Garage, Rocksteady, R&B, Soul, and even a little VU/Roxy Music type stuff.

In Manhattan, another exercise in contrast with two very different DJ nights. The famously grungy Motor City Bar hosts the punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. At the other extreme, Botanica (which is decorated like your grandma's house) is the venue for Mr. Fine Wine's night of classic Soul grooves.

You can pick your poison, but the poison always wins.

Thursday

Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys land at Maxwells. Yet another "distracted" air traffic controller? No! Not this time! They're bringing their classic rock-n-roll sound to New Jersey along with country crooner Eilen Jewell. They're also at Southpaw on Friday in case you feel like waiting or refuse to leave the high-sales-tax zone.

Also on the calendar: Brooklyn is the home of Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, and of Thursday Thump, an evening of Punk, Glam and Psych rock at Enids. Manhattan is the place to catch DJs Mr. Robinson and DosPlatos spinning 50s, 60s, and Soul music at Heathers. Don't panic, you have lots of options.

Take a deep breath.

Now breathe out.

Now keep doing that for the next 70 years or so. Less if ya' feel like it.

Marcus
