The Wooly Mammoth Emerges from the Wrong Side of his Icy Tomb

Love means never having to say "you terrify me".

Can you feel it, the thaw? Can you hear it, winter's retreat? Oh yeah, March on, wayward sons and daughters. Captain Heartlock here with your midweek mashup of "things to do" and "places to be" for discriminating hep-cats on the retro-rocker scene.

WEDNESDAY 3/3

Two Williamsburg, Brooklyn based DJ happenings of note:

DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch present
their monthly LIVING FOR KICKS party at Satellite Lounge (143 Havemeyer St and South 1st)a full-on smorgasbord of 60's garage, pop, psych and soul. Charlie Kong of Charlie and the Crybabies spins rockabilly, doo wop and other things that the greasers adore over at Rocky's outpost on the northside, Cyn Lounge on Bedford Ave and N.5th. Both these happenings are free at two affordable, dark (in a film noir kinda way) and low key spots that are perfect for taking the edge off your edge.

If it's live you desire, head on over to Don Pedro to catch the "Stoner Pop" stylings of HUMBOLDT FOG. Trippy bass lines and extravagant fuzz solos are waiting to steal your wallets. Should be on after 9pm and is yet another Lady Bree production...Do check out the lush psychedelia of THE HIDDEN RATIO, who kick off a night with fellow heads DEAD STARS and SUBMARINE BELLS at Union Pool, that old den of iniquity. I cannot confirm but I'd expect at least a $7 cover, being Union Pool and all. 30% less douche bag with your purchase on a Wednesday, to boot!

And of course, for the Manhattan side of life there's MR. FINE WINE and his rare delicious soul and r&b 45's at Houston Street's Botanica and JONATHAN TOUBIN and The New York Night Train at the one and only Motor City. Free, Free, Free - unlike your liver transplant...

THURSDAY 3/4

Big to-do over at the tripped out art-party space Secret Project Robot on Kent Avenue and River Street, on the Waterfront of Williamsburg: it's the 1 year anniversary party for Paul Dillon's PERFECT PRESCRIPTION party, promising an array of "Psych, ShoeGaze, Kraut and Space Rock" with psychedelic light show and live performances by fantastic psych-pop vagabonds THE RUNAWAY SUNS and other groups of the more shoegazey variety (FUXA, APOLLO HEIGHTS and SOREN WELL, amongst others). $5 bucks to blow your mind. DJ MOJO 2000 mans the decks into the night. Avast!

More Live: If someone invites you to "take a ride on a short bus", you take them up on it, mother: a louder and sleazier show is to be had at TRASH BAR on Grand St., Williamsburg - THE DEMANDS, GIRL TO GORILLA, THE VONDELLS, THE CRUSHER and THE RUBBER ROOM RATS, in that order from 8pm. Wowy Zowy! $6 cover with their infamous 8-9pm "open bar". The smell of tater-tots compels you!

Finally, if you find yourself in the East Village be sure to hit up Heathers (506 East 13th Street), one of the last cool places in the damn neighborhood, where Mr. Robinson, DosPlatos and BamaLama Mike will spin 50's and 60's pop, soul and doo-wop, fiercely yet lovingly.

Get out on the streets and make your choices known!

Stay Gold, Friends and Fiends...

If You Slap Me on Wednesday I'll Cry on Thursday

Yo, I heard they was givin' some free PBR's, Yo.

Hi. My name is Oweinama. You may know me as Captain Heartlock, DJ and multi-instrumentalist in some bands of some sorts. I like long walks on the beach, picking at my aching teeth, drag queen musicals, and being beaten about the head with rock-stale baguettes. But most of all I love 60’s flavored rock and soul, and going to events where such sounds thrive and fill me with feelings, feelings that make me want to dance and to live, as opposed to kill and destroy. I’ll be your man, your Wednesday man and your Thursday lover on this here GaragePunk NYC blog.

There’s something about going out in the middle of the week – often all the big heavies of event-hood save their mojo for the weekends, either because they’re day jobbers or damned traditionalists…but a lot of good stuff happens in the middle. It’s the cream filling in the Ding-Dong of nightlife. Not having to compete so much with the drooling troglodytes who crawl out from their rancid bogs at the Friday 5’o'clock whistle doesn’t hurt either.

WEDNESDAY

This Wednesday night, not a lot of options if it’s live music you’re after, but I’d recommend checking out The Bowery Boys at Public Assembly in Williamsburg. They play a literate yet pretty infectious style of melodic, jingle-jangle punk that reminds me of later period Kinks with a bit of The Raspberries/Big Star. They’re on at 10pm for an $8 cover. There’s TONS of DJ action tonight, though – Brooklyn babies can regale to Reverend Vince and his weekly spin at Savalas. His selections of soul and gospel tracks might be enough to wash the stain of sin off your pathetic backs. Then there’s Living For Kicks at The Satellite Lounge, where DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spin a bunch of groovy garage, psych, soul & r&b in one of the newest and more understated joints in the hood. Both of these happenings are free and the drinks run cheap. Across the river is Mr. Fine Wine and his unbeatable collection of rare soul 45’s at Botanica on Houston Street, and "The Man Who Need Not Sleep", Mr. Jonathan Toubin for New York Night Train, playing crazy soul, garage and psych at the dangerous Motor City Bar down on old Ludlow Street.

THURSDAY

Thursday’s move for live music is THE RUNAWAY SUNS and their shimmery, pop-tastic psychedelia at CoCo 66 in Greenpoint. If you haven’t caught them yet, do it before everyone else starts telling you how they always thought they were the coolest. I’m pretty sure it’s a free Lady Bree production. Not too far away and also in Little Poland at relatively new joint The Blackout Bar you can check out the infamous Bushwick Ronnie Seward (Whooping Crane), Alex Moyer and Josh Styles (Smashed! Blocked! and The Stalkers) where they will be educating you kids on the finer points of the Jamaican soul and rocksteady scene of the mid-late 60’s. Or, get your soul saved again by Reverend Vince at Bushwick’s Beauty Bar. If you’re off the beaten path and in Manhattan check out one of the last of the real bars on the island (and you can tell it's alright if the neighbors are trying to shut it down), Heathers, where Mr. Robinson, Dos Platos and BamaLama Mike spin 50's and 60's era soul. All of these happenings are free to get in to.

Staying home, my agoraphobic / broke friends? I recommend prepping for this weekends reading and Smashed!Block! sessions by listening to Dave the Spazz’s show on WFMU tonight, as he’s joined by the legendary Andre Williams, who I hear is gonna be on for the full 3 hours.

BOFFO!

-Oweinama

We have finally recovered!

I admit that going dancing this week may feel a little... odd.
Give it a shot. At least you're allowed to drink while you dance.

And yes, it is supposed to warm up a bit as the week goes on, so wear your best sloggin' shoes.

Monday

One-woman garage-rocker Two Tears is playing a show at "200 Orchard", which is either the laziest name for a bar ever, or it's a parking garage or something. The show is free! Also, German Measles and some (mostly punk) bands are on a bill at Death By Audio (not sure about the cover).

Tuesday

There is something happening on Tuesday! It's Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. What an expected surprise! Featuring DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late. (What an expected write-up!)

Wednesday

As always, DJ work hard on Wednesdays. In Brooklyn: DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch host Living For Kicks at the Satellite Lounge, spinning everything good from the 60s, including Garage, Rocksteady, R&B and Soul. Also on the agenda, DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B over at Savalas. Both free.

In Manhattan: At Motor City Bar it is time for New York Night Train Wednesdays, where guest DJs play punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Botanica where Mr. Fine Wine will spin his favorite Soul grooves. Once again, both free. It's almost as though they want you to come in and buy something from their establishment instead...

Thursday

DJ Reverend Vince spins Gospel, Soul, Funk and more at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, and DJs Mr. Robinson and Dos Platos have a Soul music night at Heathers in Manhattan. Again, both free. You may lose a lot of body heat this weekend, but you won't lose much money.

Beware

You're not worried about the ones who survived?
I am.

Monday

Last day of the month, everyone's broke, and DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. No cover and free pool. Oh yeah! Starts at 10.

Tuesday

A day which could really use its own promoter. Once again we've got Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late. Now that you've been paid, go out and party!

Wednesday

There are DJs everywhere tonight (and they're all free!) In Brooklyn you'll find Living For Kicks at the Satellite Lounge, which is a little late to the whole MySpace thing. DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spin everything good from the 60s, including Garage, Rocksteady, R&B and Soul. Perhaps more Rocksteady than usual this time since they recently returned from Jamaica. If that's not your thing, you can go about two blocks to Savalas, where DJ Reverend Vince (that's Mister DJ Reverend Vince to you!) spins Soul, Gospel and R&B music.

In Manhattan you can head on over to Motor City Bar for New York Night Train Wednesdays, featuring DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Botanica where Mr. Fine Wine will spin his favorite Soul grooves for you.

Thursday

Ever heard of this band The Queers? They're at Southpaw tonight with The Leftovers, Tabo and Hollis, all of whom should be getting a lecture from the masters on how to come up with memorable fucking band names.

Detriot power-poppers The Sights are in town for a show at Bruar Falls. We hear that Nouvellas will be performing and that they may have a new song or two. No clue who's opening.

The calendar is vague this day, like the magic 8-ball. Either Your 33 Black Angels are headlining an album release show at Mercury Lounge tonight, or else 33 black angels are going to be released at the Mercury Lounge tonight. No word on whether it's "of the Apocalypse" type angels or more of the "Victoria's Secret" type, but either way they're going to charge you ten bucks. But on the plus side you get to hear Wakey! Wakey!, Casey Shea and Paperdoll.

If the live music thing is not your thing tonight then check out DJs Mr. Robinson (not a Rev.) and Dos Platos/BamaLama Mike (who may or may not be two people) spinning Soul music at Heathers. I am assured that it will be nothing like the movie.

Life goes on?

Yeah, it was a real fun Halloween. It's over now,
but the memories and scars will last a lifetime.
Also, the head trauma. That will last a lifetime too,
but at least it has a nice self-anesthetizing quality.

Monday

Here's something new: DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar on Grand Street in Williamsburg. It looks like they also have free pool and Happy Hour is all night. We may have to go check this out.

Here's something old: Captain Heartlock and Professor Z are back to spinning Garage and Soul music at Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly. Say you're there for the DJs and you'll get half-price admission ($5). They also have two-for-one drinks until 9.

Tuesday

First of all, go vote. Once you've done that, head on over to Bar Matchless to watch the World Series, or if that's over, then election night coverage. While there you may also enjoy Hot Dog!, featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Lots of stuff tonight. First of all, there will be a silent auction fundraiser for Bar Matchless bartender Juliet Dostalek at Root Studios (131 North 14th Street in Brooklyn). You may recall that she was in a car accident earlier this year. We know you're broke, but check it out anyway. The busier it looks, the more pressure to bid high.

Okay, enough with the public service messages... Humboldt Fog brings their fuzz rock sound to (you get one guess...) Don Pedro tonight. They're playing with (the band) Tight White Jeans, The Hydes, and Brick Mower.

Lotsa places to dance or just hang. In Brooklyn you've got your Living For Kicks at the Satellite Lounge with DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spinning everything good from the 60s, including Garage, Rocksteady, R&B and Soul. Then over in Manhattan at Motor City Bar you've got your New York Night Train Wednesdays where they play punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Botanica where Mr. Fine Wine will spin his favorite Soul grooves for youse. All three are free.

Thursday

At Heathers in Manhattan it's time for Mr. Robinson, DosPlatos and BamaLama Mike and their monthly 50's, 60's and Soul music night. Probably no cover, but we're not sure.

It's not on the calendar, but over at Beauty Bar Brooklyn DJ Rev. Vince (of Reverend Vince Anderson and his Love Choir) will spin Gospel, Soul, Disco, Funk and maybe some Hip-Hop. We hope he'll skip that last one. Perhaps that just means that he can be bribed to play "Baby's Got Back" (which is to say, he's broke). You'll have to ask him. This is also probably free.

Stress release time.

It is just me or has this month been really stressful? I don't just mean work and personal life stuff, I mean the music has been extra loud and crazy. The Brimstones yesterday, the show at Don Pedro the Saturday before, the show at Don Pedro the Saturday before that, the last few Jadewalkers shows... it has been a wild month!

Now I hereby declare that it is time to chill. Summer is ending. We're all slowing down a little bit. Time to sit back with a carefully placed ice pack or two and just enjoy life.

Monday

Yeah right. Monday and the last day of the month and you think people are putting on shows? If you actually have any money left go catch a movie or something.

Tuesday

Hot Dog!, get 'yer Hot Dog! here! This one's made of the finest ingredients: DJs spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B, 2-for-1 drinks, good bar food, and chess hustlers. As compared to real hot dogs, which just contain DJs and old chess pieces. This week and every week at Bar Matchless starting at 8.

Wednesday

All right, we finally know who will be playing at Don Pedro on Wednesday. The lineup will be: Organs, Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade, and Humboldt Fog (but not The Othermen).

If you're in Brooklyn and in the mood for even more variety, check out Living For Kicks at the Satellite Lounge. DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spin 60s Garage, Rocksteady, R&B, Soul, and even a little VU/Roxy Music type stuff.

In Manhattan, another exercise in contrast with two very different DJ nights. The famously grungy Motor City Bar hosts the punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. At the other extreme, Botanica (which is decorated like your grandma's house) is the venue for Mr. Fine Wine's night of classic Soul grooves.

You can pick your poison, but the poison always wins.

Thursday

Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys land at Maxwells. Yet another "distracted" air traffic controller? No! Not this time! They're bringing their classic rock-n-roll sound to New Jersey along with country crooner Eilen Jewell. They're also at Southpaw on Friday in case you feel like waiting or refuse to leave the high-sales-tax zone.

Also on the calendar: Brooklyn is the home of Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, and of Thursday Thump, an evening of Punk, Glam and Psych rock at Enids. Manhattan is the place to catch DJs Mr. Robinson and DosPlatos spinning 50s, 60s, and Soul music at Heathers. Don't panic, you have lots of options.

Take a deep breath.

Now breathe out.

Now keep doing that for the next 70 years or so. Less if ya' feel like it.

You cannot read this blog.

A friend of mine tells me that GaragePunkNYC is blocked by the web filtering software at his workplace due to "sexual content". Yes, really. Personally, I blame Shimmy's profile photo.

For those of you who have all of the necessary permissions and permits to read this blog, hello! I cannot tell you what the weather will be like this week, but I can tell you how to have a good time: write for a blog and make fun of your co-authors. Figure out their passwords and change their profile photos. Or you can just go to some of these excellent shows and DJ nights in the New York area.

Monday

For the last time, at least anytime soon, Emma Vikingskull (recently featured in SPIN by the way) will DJs night of pub rawk at Double Down Saloon, a dive bar in the LES. Afterwards she's heading back to Sweden, which as we all know is a nation composed entirely of sexual content, so if you haven't been there yet, go go go! (I mean Double Down)

Edit: Never mind, it's not happening this week.

Tuesday

Do I even have to tell you? Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. Repeat after me: no cover, 2-for-1 drinks, and different DJs every week spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B (copy-and-paste magic right there). If you haven't been there yet, then I suck at this.

Wednesday

This could be a really long day for some of us. Kicking off the evening while it's still light out, Nouvellas bring their rockin' take on Soul music to McCarren Park for a free show. If you haven't been there yet, it's a park known for its sexual content. Anyway, weather permitting, the performance should start around 7pm since they're on before a free showing of the movie Fame which will start at "dusk" (8pm? 8:30?). I personally plan to skip this particular movie (though the SummerScreen series ain't half bad, check it out) and head on over to Otto's Shrunken Head to catch a night of punk and garage rock featuring The Jadewalkers, The Othermen and Atlas Punch. This'll be one of the last Jadewalkers shows for a while since Emma Vikingskull is the lead singer of that band, so catch 'em while you can. Oh, both of those shows are free by the way.

Edit: So now the Nouvellas/Fame show is canceled because of possible thunderstorms. The weather is engaging in censorship as well, it seems.

If you're in New Jersey and don't feel like leaving the state you might just head to Maxwell's instead to catch Love (with Johnny Echols), Baby Lemonade and Beretta. Note that the Electric Prunes are no longer on the bill for this show (due to a disagreement with the promoters?)

Your afterparty options include Living For Kicks, a night of Soul, Garage, R&B and Rocksteady (?!) at the new Satellite Lounge in Brooklyn, Mr. Fine Wine's classic Soul night downstairs at Botanica in Manhattan, and the New York Night Train Garage and Punk night at Motor City Bar in the LES. They're all free.

Thursday

No live music tonight which we know of, so I get to copy-and-paste again. If ya' want something to do check out Boogaloo Shampoo for a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar NYC, Thursday Thump and its gourmet blend of Punk, Glam and Psych at Enids, and/or DJs Mr. Robinson and DosPlatos spinning 50s, 60s, and Soul music at Heathers. It's like being a kid in a candy store, with a gun, which is why you don't have to pay for anything (all shows no cover).

Here's a way to have some fun: look back through the old posts on GaragePunkNYC and try to find all of the sexual content. It's like a scavenger hunt! Whoever sends us the longest list of sexual content on GPNYC wins free admission to all Hullabaloo shows for the rest of the year. Just think of it as our one-year anniversary contest (ha!) We'll announce the winner in September after we have thoroughly evaluated all of your submissions ;) .

Marcus

P.S. Just kidding about the contest! But do look through the old posts on GPNYC. There's some hot stuff in there.
