Eskimo Punk

In Search Of: Dingleberries

Eskimo Punk - see that? I made that. New genre. Call Pitchfork. Brrrrrrrrrrrr!

Hey, I heard there's a snow storm. Did you hear about that? The lady on the news is terrified. Did you get enough milk and eggs and bread and crystal meth to outlast this...this...ARCTIC BLAST!?!?!

This is what's going on tonight and tomorrow - but I'd advise doing a double check before you head out in case people decide to cancel events due to the inclement weather. It's really not looking good.

***********UPDATE: Wednesday's Love tribute at Otto's Shrunken Head has been called off due to the weather. Ghost town out there!*******************

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday night means NEW YORK NIGHT TRAIN with JONATHAN TOUBIN and his array of wild ride '45s for the wild eyed MOTOR CITY Bar on olde Ludlow Street in the LES. Free, like a snowflake

Over at Botanica's on Houston Street by Lafayette is MR. FINE WINE with his faboo collection of 60's soul scorchers. Free, like the cold wind

Another edition of COPYCAT goes down tonight at OTTO'S SRHUNKEN HEAD, this time an homage to the essential grand dad's of the scene, LOVE and the songs of ARTHUR LEE and BRYAN MACLEAN, starring MADAM ROBOT and the LUST BRIGADE, WHOOPING CRANE, MICHAEL LYNCH (The Anything People) and RAZE REGAL (The Stalkers). Free, like Jack Frost nibbling on your nipple.

AGAIN, I urge you to make some calls or use your psychic friend abilities to find out if any of this ends up being cancelled!

THURSDAY

At Bar Matchless, settle in for tales from the literally High seas, m'boy -
Greatest Three-Minute Rock ‘n’ Roll Story Ever
finds a diverse collection of hooligan writers (Vice, Impose Magazine, the Village Voice, ect) and rockers (members of THE GIRAFFES, THE HOLD STEADY, ect) regaling the audience with ribald tales of the seedy rock and roll life.

At Bowey Electric enter the DAMN KIDS party, with the man behind Nuggets and The Patty Smith band Lenny Kaye at 9:30pm, followed by Ivan Julian (Richard Hell and the Voidoids), and noisy fuzzy new kid punks Baby Fangs. Assume at least an $8 door charge as is par for course.

And finally at Williamsburg, Brooklyn's ZEBULON, psych psych PSYCH it out heavy style with SEAN DWYER GRIFFIN, HEAVY HANDS and TRAVELING CIRCLE, follow
ed by Dj's Ambassador Hazy, Hardtop and Your Pal Josh (Traveling Circle/Sorceress drummer extraordinaire) spinning garage, psych and soul into the night.

Good luck out there, and may Sasquatch be with you. HUZZAH!

A week of fuzzy things.

Have you RSVPed yet?
It is "strictly required"
and strictly enforced by
a one-eyed gorilla bouncer
with bad teeth.

Monday

At 200 Orchard (I think that's their website) in Manhattan it is time for a Glad All Over!!! party with The Rats, Des Roar, and DJ Charly Manson. And it's free!!!

Over in Brooklyn, the Rev. Vince Anderson and His Love Choir continue their Monday evening residency at Union Pool. Starts at 11pm, also no cover, and what it lacks in exclamation points it will surely make up for in fervor.

Tuesday

Tonight's special is... Hot Dog! (same special we had last week) at Bar Matchless. Featuring DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and pretty much whatever they want because they are unstoppable! No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Not its usual week or its usual music, CopyCat hosts a night of Sesame Street covers (!!!) with bands Whooping Crane, Anna Copa Cabanna and the MG5, and Madame Robot and the Lust Brigade. With DJ Xerox and his clone (unconfirmed) DJ Larry Red spinning cover songs until bedtime. Plus: furry costumes, special cupcakes (no, not that kind), and even more surprises in store (just not from eating the cupcakes). The cover is not one of them: it's free.

Wednesday night is DJ night in NYC. DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B over at Savalas in Brooklyn. In Manhattan at Motor City Bar it is time for New York Night Train Wednesdays, where guest DJs play punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Botanica where Mr. Fine Wine will spin his favorite Soul grooves. Hell, they even got two of 'em at CopyCat. All of these DJ nights are free.

Thursday

One big show tonight: Jack Oblivian and The Tennessee Tearjerkers along with Mannequin Men at Bruar Falls. Free, but you must RSVP. Anyone else feel like they might just be going to this one? Yeah, me too.

Marcus

This episode of GPNYC is brought to you by the number zero, which is how much every single show and DJ night costs this week. Nice!

Get ready for a long New Years weekend.

The end of the "whatever it's called" decade.
The Naughts? I prefer "The Naught-ies".
But whatever it's called, it's over.

Note: this post is really, really likely to be updated as we hear about more New Year's Eve parties.

Monday

Snow again (supposedly). Warm 'yerself up at Art Land Bar where DJ Knifefight will be spinning all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll. No cover, free pool and drink specials all night starting at 10. And no competition, so go!

Tuesday

The Bowery Electric hosts a Gogol Bordello afterparty upstairs, but we strongly recommend heading downstairs to catch Whooping Crane, The Dirty Shames, Daddy Long Legs and The Bowery Boys. Show starts at 9pm and there's a free vodka bar from 9-10. $5 cover. And/or, head over to Lakeside Lounge to catch The Martinets for free at 9pm.

In Brooklyn, check out Trophy Bar for a "Birthday Blow-Out" with DJs Sophie Thunder, Boogaloo Omnibus and Billy Miller (of Norton Records/The A-Bones). It's a party for folks with birthdays between Dec. 24 and Jan. 1, but everyone is invited. Pretty sure there is no cover, but feel free to bring gifts (I do believe myrrh is traditional). Or you could just go to Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless where they'll have DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, starts at 8.

Wednesday

DJs and more DJs. DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. New York Night Train Wednesdays at Motor City Bar features guest DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Mr. Fine Wine spins fine Soul music at Botanica. And furthermore... DJs Gregg D and Dave Ready (of Sorceress) will spin glam, rock-n-roll and "teenage boogie" at St. Jerome's (the bar -- it's at 155 Rivington in Manhattan). There's supposed to be a special secret guest live performer at that last one. They're all free, so as long as you go, you can not go wrong.

Thursday

Yeah, there miiiight just be something happening this Thursday. But considering that you'll probably get charged a $5 cover just for stepping outside, you might want to plan ahead.

Our suggestions:

1. Don't plan on taking a cab anywhere.

a. Golden Triangle and Electric Tickle Machine at Glasslands Gallery. Also with DJ Thirwell, a "secret performance", and an open vodka bar from 9-10. $10 cover.

α (that's an "alpha" - all of our suggestions should be considered equal). Your 33 Black Angels,The Hoa Hoa's, Hollands, Hobsons Choice, Apollo Heights, akg's Humboldt Fog, and perhaps more at Don Pedro. $8 cover and free Colt 45 from 11-midnight. Served in champagne glasses. Okay, not really.

. The Detriot Cobras, The A-Bones and The Underthings at Mercury Lounge. Tickets are... $25 advance, $30 at the door. Oy vey!

$. The Subway Soul Club presents Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and Obits at The Bell House. DJs after the bands include the Boogaloo Omnibus (that guy again!) Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the door, though after the bands the cover drops to $5.

Edit: and more... DJ Jahna Rain spins funk and soul all night at The Lamp Post Bar and Grill in Jersey City. New York Night Train is throwing all-night parties at Cake Shop, Motor City Bar and Home Sweet Home. Covers range from $0 to $15, check out their website for more info. The Trash Bar is doing a punk rock New Years with Murphy's Law, No Redeeming Social Value, World War IX, Blackout Shoppers and Skum City. $12 cover includes an open bar from 8-9.

Marcus

PS. Anyone know the story behind all these open vodka bars? There's one every week lately, two this week. Did some company hire a really good rep or what? And also, how did Don Pedro get stuck with those little bottles of Colt 45?

And so it begins...

The holiday season cometh... you know what that means. Past-their-prime bands dishing out ill-advised Christmas covers; whole groups on stage in baggy Santa outfits; Facebook event invites with terrible holiday puns-- you know the deal.

Still, there is relief: it comes in a bottle or a glass and costs between 3 and 7 dollars. We kid! (or not) -- actually there's just a bunch of stuff to do this weekend, so break out your coat (it's officially that time) and head out to one of these fine events.
TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Starting off with Manhattan, there's the usual Smashed! Blocked! dj night at Beauty Bar on 14th with Josh Styles and crew. Free as always.

Over at Bowery Electric, the Victims (the US one!) and the Dirty Shames celebrates the former's new CD with the Jukebox Zero(e)s of Philadelphia. $8

Over at Home Sweet Home, we assume Toubin's got the usual thing going down. FREE

If you're uptown, stop in at Ding Dong Lounge where Linda Rizzo will be dishing out garage, punk, soul and more. FREE

And at Lakeside Lounge, catch a rare appearance of cannoli suckers Jimmy & the Wolfpack at eleven o'clock sharp. Free.

Over in Brooklyn, the ABC Rebel Night crew bring their rockabilly party to Greenpoint's Warsaw on Driggs Ave. Free; and Whooping Crane, Sorceress and a couple of other bands are at "Upper" Greenpoint's CoCo 66 where there is a $5 cover.

SATURDAY:

Looks like a rainy one. Hopefully that won't stop you from heading over to Bowery Ballroom for the great El Vez (the "Mexican Elvis") and his Elvettes doing what ought to be one of the better Christmas shows of the season, supported by surfsters Los Straitjackets. $?

You could also find shelter with more surf at Unsteady Freddie's Surf Nite @ Otto's. It's a FREE country baby.

Over in Brooklyn, the guitar-heavy Humbolt Fog are at Don Pedro with Radio America (and others). $5; at Glasslands, it's New York Night Train's holiday party with (you guessed it!) the Stalkers and the Beets. also $5; but in case $5 is too rich for your blood and/or you just wanna dance, dance, dance, head over to Huckleberry for Jumpy's Soul-A-Go-Go featuring guest DJ Phast Phreddie. It's free like the wind. Ride it!

SUNDAY:

Johnny Chan & the New Dynasty Six return to Arlene's Grocery. No idea on time for this one, but "I Hate You Baby" has been stuck in my head for days. That's a good thing.

As always, there will be good DJs in the front room at Union Pool. Also free.

See you soon lovers!
SHIMMY

As an alternative to listening to Christmas carols all week...

The Specific Heats bring their garage-psych sound and
their Thanksgiving dinner to Bruar Falls on Tuesday
because even poultry deserves its 15 minutes of fame.

Monday

Glad All Over! hosts a show at Bowery Electric featuring the (cheese-inspired?) heavy rock of Humboldt Fog and the crunchy-like-a-cracker psych-rock of Whooping Crane, with DJ Lupe Loop spinning the platters. Sounds delicious. Not sure how much it will cost, and no the show does not start at 6pm like it says on someone's MySpace calendar (more like 9pm, which is to say, 10pm).

Also on the agenda, DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. Great music, convenient location, free pool all night, and no cover. It all starts at 10pm (which is to say, 9pm, at least the last time I was there).

I saw a webpage for a show this weekend which said that the show "starts at 9pm, doors at 12pm"*. Have we forgotten how time works, folks?

Tuesday

The Bowery Electric has another good show tonight featuring Organs, Love Pirates and Kelle Calco. Sorceress is probably not on the bill, unless perhaps the show was double-booked? That has been known to happen. Their show this weekend featured a comedian in between two of the bands Maybe this time there will be a contortionist or magician or human floor or something?

Did we mention that the Specific Heats are headlining at Bruar Falls? Not so sure about the other bands, but it's a free show, so check 'em out.

As always, Hot Dog! is at at Bar Matchless on Tuesdays. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late. Oh, and it's our friend Tara's 30th birthday party, so you might be able to mooch some free cake.

Wednesday

Time once again for CopyCat at Otto's Shrunken Head. Not sure what they're covering this week, but for the low low price of $0 you get to catch The Bowery Boys and Sousalves. DJ Xerox spins cover songs all night. Oh, and there's free pumpkin pie "while supplies last" (you know it's the holidays when people start offering you dessert everywhere).

If you're looking for a DJ, have you ever come to the right night. DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. Motor City Bar hosts its traditional Thanksgiving celebration called New York Night Train Wednesdays, a night of punk, rock, and other loud musical offerings. And of course there's Mr. Fine Wine at Botanica spinning his finest Soul grooves (you know, the ones on his records).

Thursday

It's Thanksgiving, so go hang with your family!

If your family happens to like going out and partying while listening to Punk Rock, Rockabilly and more (and that don't mean Christmas carols, folks) then may we suggest the No Thanks-Giving party at Bruar Falls with DJs Just Derek and Seanzi Dirtbag. That's where Mommy and I will be. As an alternative, Jonathan Toubin is DJing Thursday Night Thump this week at Enid's, where they have a wonderful apple pie (and some tasty beats no doubt).

Marcus

* By the way, 12pm is actually noon. Yeah, come on in nine hours early to have a "few" drinks before the show. Not sure if that was a little bit of stupidity or a huge heapin' pile of audacity...

My shortest post ever.

Whooping Crane covers Sweet at Otto's this Wednesday.

Last week was crazy, next week is CMJ. In between... we're all sleeping in? This week is extra dead. Dead, buried, forgotten, disinterred and stood up in a museum. A good week to think about your Halloween costume.

If we hear about anything else, we will definitely update this blog post.

Tuesday

Hot Dog! is reliable once again, thank you. DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock and Punk at Bar Matchless. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

It's time once again for Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head. This week, a tribute to The Sweet with Whooping Crane and The Vondelles. With DJ Xerox spinning the cover tunes. The show's free, but do bring a few bucks for the bands por favor.

Going a whole week without a show at Don Pedro? Inconceivable! About as likely as winning a land war in Asia. Sure enough they came through at the last minute: tonight they've got Boysen Girls, Georgiana Starlington, 7 Ton Hand, Black On Brown, and Ghost Dad. No cover!

Motor City Bar hosts New York Night Train Wednesdays, its regular punk/rock/hard stuff night. Botanica has Mr. Fine Wine's night of classic Soul grooves. Both are no cover.

Thursday

One more show... the The Raveonettes are at Webster Hall on Thursday.

That's all folks! Not much to this week, but come back next week for a much longer post about shows like this and this.

A week of hard choices.

Human Eye are in town for two shows this week.

It wasn't so long ago that I was complaining about how boring Monday was. No more! Monday is the new Wednesday, whereas Wednesday is the new black and black is the new lolcat.

Monday

This is your last chance to see The Choke for a long time unless you're planning to follow them around a la Phish. Before they take off for San Diego they're playing one last show at Bowery Electric with Images and Wild Yaks. Rumor has it that Corn Mo and burlesque performer Runaround Sue are also on the bill. The show starts at either 6 or 9 depending on who you believe (probably 9, meaning 10:30, which is also the new black).

Now, if you go to that show you'll miss Human Eye and Terrible Twos at Bruar Falls. The bill includes Stupid Party and Nude Beach (probably not a burlesque performer?) It's the "Bands Named By Nine-Year Old Boys" bill, and it should be pretty good.

It also looks like our pal Kymber Lee NYC is DJing at Double Down Saloon. That DJ at that bar... the word "rowdy" comes to mind. No burlesque (and if you ask, you will lose a human eye) but there will be pumpkin carving. By drunk people. Should be good for a laugh.

Tuesday

It's their "Stereo Vision" tour: the second Human Eye show this week on Tuesday night at Don Pedro. They're sharing the stage Ex-Humans, Liquor Store, VLC and Terrible Twos for a bill which is a little more punk than the one on Monday. Anyone else notice that Human Eye is skipping Manhattan to do two shows in Brooklyn?

Tuesday is also the night for Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Doowop, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock and Punk. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late. Also in Brooklyn. Gee, sorry about that Manhattan.

Wednesday

Don Pedro comes through again on Wednesday. They've got a psych rock show featuring Whooping Crane (more "rock"), The Hidden Ratio (more "psych"), and the Honey Dos ("do"s? "dos"? I dunno.)

There aren't so many bands playing on Wednesday but there are lots of DJ nights. Living For Kicks lands at the Satellite Lounge. DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spin everything good from the 60s, including Garage, Rocksteady, R&B and Soul. Motor City Bar (in Manhattan!) hosts its regular punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. Bring earplugs. As always Botanica is the venue for Mr. Fine Wine's night of classic Soul grooves (no earplugs required).

Thursday

The Girls at Dawn are (already!) releasing a record. The show at Mercury Lounge with headliners Thee Oh Sees and The Fresh and Onlys is also their record release show.

A bunch of bands are playing at Trash Bar. If you can only catch one, go see local punks The Hydes at 10, because by Thursday they'll be the new black.

There may be a soul night at Beauty Bar Brooklyn and a rock/funk/punk night at Enid's, but I guess they're not on our calendar anymore. Also, our calendar previously said something about Plastic Crimewave Sound, but actually they're coming to Brooklyn in November (Knitting Factory Brooklyn on the 8th, then Bar Matchless on the 9th).

Let's be honest, sleep is fuckin' awesome.

The picture above is amazingly similar to what I actually look like most Sunday mornings.

Sometimes I wonder why I try so hard to pitch these shows. It's music, right? Who doesn't like that? And if you didn't like this particular type of music (or want to see your band's name mentioned outside of your own MySpace page) then you probably wouldn't be reading this blog in the first place.

The only thing I can figure is that I'm trying to convince you to stay up late instead of going to sleep. Now that's important, because sleep is really tempting, I know. You lie down and slip into dreamland and then hours later you wake up feeling really good. It's like getting wasted except you wake up feeling really good. Cheaper too.

You know what? I can't win. Just stay home and sleep. What's that you say? The A/C is broken and it's 120 degrees in your apartment? Well then, all of the venues below feature cold drinks and (in most cases) working A/C! Even if you do sweat it will be in the presence of cute sweaty people of the opposite sex and/or same sex (whatever floats 'yer boat). So c'mon out!

Monday

Head on over to Bowery Electric Monday night to catch psych-rockers Whooping Crane and the last performance (for a "long time") by The Jadewalkers. The Jadewalkers ripped it up at Otto's last week, so if you missed 'em, or if you will miss 'em, this is your last chance to see them anytime soon. Oh, and the show is FREE, so unless you really desperately need to spend the evening de-humidifying your underwear or whatever, go go go!

Tuesday

There's a bill at the Trash Bar which gets awfully indie near the end, but Buzzcocks/Stiff Little Fingers pop-punk sound of GeTSeT ("at 8pm") and/or the acoustic blues sound of Jack Buf ("at 9pm") might just be up your alley. And nobody's complaining about the open PBR and well drink bar from 8-9 with admission!

Just like every other Tuesday, you could also check out Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless (8pm to late). No cover, 2-for-1 drinks, good food, and different DJs every week spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B. Oh, and you can play chess in back too. Just don't make any bets (I hear that some of those guys are real chess sharks).

Wednesday

The week gets a little busier on Wednesday. We've got Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head once again this week. Little Black Egg (feat. members of The Rats) are doing a tribute to The Damned, Action Camp will perform (but they don't sound like The Damned) and DJ Xerox will spin cover songs (including covers of Damned songs?) I'm not sure if there's a theme this time or not. It's FREE though, so you can't lose!

Back in Brooklyn, Your 33 Black Angels headline at Bruar Falls. The bill is a little folk-y overall, but when these guys pull out the heavy guitar riffs and organ sounds (performed on a synth, admittedly) they sure do rock.

Also tonight, Mr. Fine Wine spins classic Soul downstairs at Botanica in the City and Motor City Bar hosts New York Night Train Wednesdays with special guest DJs spinning garage rock, punk, and who knows what else.

Thursday

Come visit lovely Brooklyn, New York! Tour our historic apartments and ancient ruins (which are also apartments)! Enjoy the local nightlife! Mingle with the locals at Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn! Experience Thursday Thump, a night of Punk, Glam and Psych rock at Enids! It's the perfect vacation: a free one! (No cover for either DJ night).

So many ways to get censored on this theme. Notice that we are not going that way. All right?
