I know where it'll be warm. Maybe even hot...

The big event of the next few days
is a pretty easy call for once.

Sunday

The Brooklyn Record Riot is happening now at The Warsaw in Brooklyn until 8pm. $3 admission for all the records you can eat (as long as you're willing to pay for them first -- I recommend eating the kielbasa instead and just taking the records home). Noon - 8pm.

Later tonight is the big Brooklyn Psychfest (see flyer above) with Madam Robot, Philadelphia's Asteroid #4, Traveling Circle, La Otracina, Heavy Hands, and a bunch of bands we don't know personally. That'll be $8. Starts early-ish (7pm).

You can also catch Turbo Fruits at Mercury Lounge, but only if you already have tickets (it's sold out). A better bet to finish the evening is to head over to Union Pool and catch DJs Dave The Spazz and Andy Maltz spinning sounds of the 50s and 60s, soul, garage, oddities and rarities.

Monday

The Reverend Vince Anderson and his Love Choir bring their gospel and soul sounds to Union Pool once again. Starts at 11pm, no cover.

Tuesday

Over at Bruar Falls they're hosting a free garage rock show with The Hydes, The Anabolics, and Guitar Bomb. The show starts at 8pm (yeah, right). Of course, you can also check out DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. We call it Hot Dog!, and it's at Bar Matchless. Featuring a new later start time (10pm) and 2-for-1 drinks.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: something to do (yay!)

This is why we do not mix music and football.

Sunday

I'm sure that some of you know that tonight is Superbowl XLIV. I knew that without looking up the number, thank you*. But here at GaragePunkNYC we don't officially care. We would, however, like to point out a few things:

  • The Superbowl should be over by 11, meaning there's plenty of time to go out afterwards.
  • Several of your favorite bars are showing the Superbowl (Bar Matchless comes right to mind) so your friends can just join you afterwards.
  • The halftime show this year features The Who. Now, I'm not saying that they're exactly in their prime ("And now, a band which could have played Superbowl I..."), I'm just saying that if you have to hang out with your Superbowl-watching friends, you could do a lot worse (e.g. Justin Timberlake again).

After that nonsense has finished, consider heading on over to Union Pool where DJ Dave the Spazz spins in the front room from 10-midnight, followed by DJ Andy Maltz from midnight on spinning a mix of garage, rock-n-roll, oddities and rarities. Or catch DJs Cowboy Mark and Kyle M who are "bringing their funky love" to Coco66. No cover for either I do believe.

Monday

Big Thanks to the Glad All Over!!! Party for making Monday a night worth writing about. This week they're hosting a night of rock-n-roll with The Big Death Scene (formerly Scream and Scream Again), The Anabolics and The Dirty Shames over at 200 Orchard Fontana's in Manhattan. No cover.

In Brooklyn, The Reverend Vince Anderson brings his Love Choir and their gospel/soul sound to Union Pool. Late start (11pm), also no cover.

Tuesday

More free music, starting with a night of insane garage-punk with The Outta Controllers (which includes members of Stalkers and Ex-Humans and members of Ex-Humans), The Back CCs and Foster Care at Union Pool (which is seriously on a roll lately). Fans of funkier sounds can check out The London Souls with Hymns at Mercury Lounge, though this show is not free ($10).

Also tonight it is time for a very special Hot Dog!... because for once I know who's DJing. It's DJ Shimmy, Bobby Boulders (and presumably DJ Jumpy, who is the unofficial emcee of the evening). Also features 2-for-1 drinks, really good bar food, and no cover. Starts at 9:45 (can we just say 10 from now on, please?) Starts at 10 because I say so, dammit.

Marcus

* And here's how to remember: the Giants won Superbowl XLII two years ago. It was awesome.

Labor Day & The End of Summer in New York

Phoenix's Love Me Nots hit Hullabaloo! at Union Pool tonight

Over here in America, we celebrate the end of Summer by having a holiday called "Labor Day". It's a bit less exciting than the marching and slogan shouting of May Day celebrated everywhere else in the world, but at least it's a three day weekend.

This particular LDW starts off with a bang and ends with a whimper... or does it? read 'til the end:

TONIGHT (Friday):

Big Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys bring their swing & rockabilly to Brooklyn's Southpaw after last night's Maxwell's stand. Sandy is great, but he's paired with some roots rockers for some reason this time around. Looks like at least $15 at the door, maybe $20.

Over at Maxwell's in Hoboken, the Nouvellas reunite with friends the Black Hollies for a combo bill of freakbeat & soul. It's $10 at the door.

Mr Fine Wine will be DJing in Jonathan Toubin's absence at LES's Home Sweet Home, which means even more great soul & maybe even some danceable gospel. FREE.

Smashed! Blocked! returns to Beauty Bar in Manhattan. Not sure of the guest DJs for tonight, didn't see a post. FREE.

Over at Williamsburg's Bruar Falls (catacorner across the street from Trash Bar), there's a psych/ish bill featuring the Runaway Suns, who seem to take inspiration equally from 60's pop and 90's stuff like Brian Jonestown & Spacemen 3, and the Smith Westerns from Chicago. Heavy Hands are NOT playing this bill as previously thought. Cover is $6.

And last but certainly not least, Hullabaloo! returns to Union Pool in Williamsburg. We've got a pretty fat bill here, headed up by Arizona's Love Me Nots, a pretty buzzy femme-fronted garage punk band. Their new album is out in a couple of weeks and I'm told there will be advance copies! This is your last chance to catch 'em in NYC before they head out to NJ and other parts. Plus we've got more than able support from 60's garage punks the Electric Mess, Powerpunkers the Anabolics and return of one of my favorite New York bands, the Above! All that and Charles and I will be throwing down on the turntables (totally different sets from last week's Shoutin' School I might add). $8, doors at 9-- that's sharp people, the Lifeguards at the Pool run a tight ship!

SATURDAY:

The Black Hollies rock an early show at the Mercury Lounge... sounds like if you're not there by 8, you'll miss em!

New York's newest (and least typical) Rockabilly band Love-Struck will be at LES's Bowery Electric with some other bands we're not familiar with...

Unsteady Freddie continues to rock his never ending Surf Nite at Otto's...

and... that's it? I guess everyone's out of town!
SUNDAY:

On what should be a good day to party, we're only seeing two possibilities:

Voodoo Flats at Beauty Bar -- a weekly rockabilly party. Unless that's been cancelled, since we haven't seen any posts about it! (help!)

DJ Andy Maltz @ Union Pool - At least Andy's always there!

That was kind of a sad ending to the Summer, right? Well, surprise, surprise, Charles and I are not letting it end that way. Tuesday night, that's right, FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL OMG, we are bringing the greatest Spanish garage band and living legends WAU y Los ARRRGHS!!! to Don Pedro for one last burst of fun. Also on the bill are the fabulous Above and the high energy Foster Care and it's only $5. Doors at 9pm sharp and Wau on stage by 11:30 ! Even Soccer Moms are welcome!

Neither Rain, Nor Snow, Nor Hail...

Montreal's Nymphets play Matchless in Brooklyn Friday.
Nothing will prevent NYC's garage punkers from drinking, partying, puking and rocking this week/end.

It's awful outside but there IS reason not to lock yourself in your room until March, starting with
tonight's Anabolics show at Otto's Shrunken Head. It's part of a series (every other week?) called Copycats in which a band performs covers of some other band's songs. The Anabolics have decided to take on the Sex Pistols; better yet will probably be their originals.

I believe there's a cover, not sure how much, but it might be worth it just to see if there's any monkey business as there was when Thee Yetis played this night a couple of months ago. Let's just say that they had the plug pulled on them, 'Get Back'-style.

Also tonight in the big ol' city is Mr Fine Wine at his usual perch (Botanica). Fine Wine's DJ sets at last Saturday's Dig Deeper were probably the swinginest of all. As a side note, Dig Deeper was a great party in general-- Hannibal was on form! Check out some insanely watermarked / copyrighted photos by the photog who kept jamming his camera in my face here: flash-movie-so-you-don't-rip-him-off photos by oblivious photoloser.

Also I took some mediocre after party dance photos.

Anyway back to tonight! There's also Jonathan Toubin at Motor City in Manhattan doing his regular NYNT thang.

Next up, Thursday night-- Looks like an interesting show featuring ATL/Brooklyn punks Ex-Humans, Philly's Love City and Brooklyn's longtime 70's rockers Electric Shadows plus 2 more at... ahem... Crash Mansion. Doors are at 7:30 (huh?) and the place looks like a club from 1995, but I'm betting the $2million sound system will do interesting things with these bands' sonics...

Also Thursday we assume Jonathan Toubin's at Beauty Bar with the no-cover-all-soul Boogaloo Shampoo and has his satellite party going at Enid's in Greenpoint.

Friday, not as busy as last week but still some good stuff. Live show-wise, we've got the Back CCs, the most excellent boy/girl-vox punks Nymphets (from Montreal) and the Dirty Shames at Matchless in Greenpoint for Brenda's SuperModelDeathDive party. Brenda will also DJ with guest Jesse "Gasface" who recently provided some extremely entertaining reviews to the new Humanbeing Lawnmower Zine (worth it for the reviews & comics alone).

Also live we've got a performance by new "Hillbilly/Bop/Boogie" band Susquehanna Industrial Tool & Die Co at Phast Phreddie's Wang Dang Doogle gig at Soundfix Lounge (the former coffee shop that's now a band with a small stage). Phreddie will be DJing all 50's all night. No cover on this one either.

AND 60's garage/blues/punkers Organs are at Don Pedro with "Everyone" which, in the very least, is a good band name.

If you're looking for some pure DJ gigs, Melissa-Anne and Jenni return with their 50's/60's DJ night at Legion in Williamsburg called CHICKABOOM! this time featuring guest djs Dave the Spazz (WFMU) and Andy from the Little Killers / Underthings. No cover.

Also going on is Sr. Toubin's Shakin' All Over Sideways Down at Home Sweet Home in the city (no cover).

Saturday... it's a bit of a wasteland, which will help make Jumpy's Soul-A-Go-Go gig at Huckleberry all the more fun. It's soul tunes all night, no cover and some good (if somewhat pricey) food.

See ya 'round suckers!

Wah Wah Wednesday!

Detroit's Terrible Twos are at Cake Shop Friday.

It's hump day once again and so time for us to look forward to the weekend... plenty of good nights goin' down so check it:

Kickin' it off tonight is Jonathan Toubin with guest DJ "Fredric Blasco" at Motor City (FREE). Also tonight Mr. Fine Wine continues his endless run at Botanica.

Tomorrow night, NYNT's soul night Boogaloo Shampoo is once again at Beauty Bar but this time with DJ Josh Styles instead of Sr. Toubin (FREE).

Back in Brooklyn, there's 70's "pinky" rockers Another Saturday Night at Don Pedro, along with Gringo Star. AND at the Charleston, The Terrible Twos (more on them below). Also we assume NYNT's glam/punk Thursday Thump party is chugging along at Enid's.

Friday night, reason to celebrate with the return of Phast Phreddie to Brooklyn! This time he's spinning his top 150 Bossest records of all time at SoundFix Lounge (the bar connected to the record store). No cover and promises to be a good time.

Just a short stumble away we've got Barforama! 60's garage/soul dj night at K&M with hosts Dylan "Otto" Bahn and Miss January 1963 (FREE). The flyer was so good I had to include it:The Friday action continues in Manhattan where LiveFastDie are supporting the Terrible Twos at the monthly Midnite Till Death party at Cake Shop. This sounds like a killer show-- the 'Twos aren't just another Detroit band (although that would probably be good enough)-- their (late 2007?) album is a fastpaced scream of a record with stabbing synths, snotty vocals and vertigo-inducing punk. Highly recommended but a word of caution: the name of the night is misleading and bands may start around 10PM!

Saturday's no slouch in the entertainment department either this weekend-- Atlanta's Howlies return to Union Pool, once again supporting a bunch of kiddie indie rock bands... so check the set time and avoid the "emos".

Over at Don Pedro, there's the best show I didn't book all year long... as of this moment, I believe there's 5 bands including: Siberians, Anabolics, Barberries (ATL), Pinche Gringo (NC) and the Electric Mess.
The Electric Mess are at Don Pedro Saturday.

No, it's not a Hullabaloo! even though it falls on the second Saturday and Charles' band is even playing it (and I'll be there!). Barberries have a sort of ATL garage vibe goin' on (think Black Lips from three years ago but poppier), Pinche Gringo (ex-Spinns) is a great distorted blues-punk one-man band and the Electric Mess (who I haven't seen) are a new-ish old school 60's garage punk band.

If you've still got any energy left after that bill, Jumpy and Girlsoul are doin' their soul dj thing at Huckleberry 10PM-late late (FREE). Expect Don Pedro stragglers to saunter in around 3AM.

See ya 'round garage-a-reenos!

Hump Day / Yom Kippur Eve Celebration!

Thee Yetis appear at Otto's at 9PM tonight.

Tonight, being Hump Day AND Yom Kippur Eve (fasting means no alcohol, so get it in tonight!), is a particularly good time to check out New York's midweek action... check out our garage punk shows calendar including these events:

First up is the happy hour DJing of Miss Christina Ginger (Anabolics) and Frank (of Brooklyn's Above) at The Creek in Long Island City. Starting at 5 and running 'til at least 8 (possibly later), you can grab some Mexican food and hang at this weird venue near the B61 bus, the G train, or the 7 train (if you're coming from Midtown, in which case I suggest you start with some tequila).

Next we've got Thee Yetis, a formerly DC-based and now NYC-resident garage/punk band playing what we believe to be a free set at Otto's around 9PM. These youngins' tunes vary between Pebbles-ish garage to 70's punk pop and now have demo CDs on offer (cheap).

Finally we've got ever-present DJ Jonathan Toubin at Motor City Bar at 10PM, where there will be the usual crowd downing 'em rapidly and listening to the punkier side of his collection.
