Week, Parts 1-3

Sorry, that part of the week is over.
It's Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.
You have to pretend to be be normal now.

Sunday

Start the evening with Awesome Color at the Market Hotel BUT BE WARNED... they're playing one of those shows "with their friends" which means that nobody else on the bill sounds anything like them. Check out the openers' MySpace pages first (Tyvek, Talk Normal, CSC Funk Band) and see if you like 'em before you decide when to start your evening (personally I kind of like CSC's stripped-down funk-jazz sound, but could do without the other two). Cover unknown. Seriously, nobody has the slightest clue how much it'll cost, it's not on anyone's MySpace, or on Todd P's site, or anywhere at all.

So anyway, our good pals Dave The Spazz and Andy Maltz will be spinning some good music over at Union Pool starting at 10pm. While they might play just about anything (at least anything you can dance to) they seem to prefer the music of the 50s and 60s, soul, and old-fashioned garage.

Monday

Two shows for ya' tonight. Humboldt Fog engulfs K&M in Brooklyn in fuzzed out rock-n-roll. That show is free and starts at 8pm, and ends "by" 10pm, which means that you can also catch the later show featuring The Reverend Vince Anderson. He and his Love Choir bring the sounds of Gospel, Blues and Soul to the holiest place in Brooklyn, Union Pool (much like God, it is everywhere this week). Starts at 11pm and also free.

Tuesday

Sick of all these choices? Well have we got the day for you! It's called Tuesday and is best known around these parts for Hot Dog!, a night of DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more at Bar Matchless. They've also got 2-for-1 drinks, which'll get you spinning by the end of the night. Starts at 9:44:23pm or some damn thing like that 10pm and there is no cover.

Happy Birthday To Us!

Not to crow too much but, we're a year old! GPNYC launched October 1st, 2008 with the goal of reducing productivity at as many offices, studios and workplaces as possible. Our evil plan seems to be succeeding, since we've had over 26,000 visits in the past year. Not bad for a site dedicated to "dead/outdated/retro/boring/misogynist/neanderthal" music, wouldntcha say? Feel free to thank Marcus, Charles, Blair and myself next week when you get fired for "surfing profane internet sites" while at work.

While we're hoping that we get 26,000 visits at our birthday party on Saturday in Brooklyn, we'll settle for just a couple hundred of you... we've prepared quite a menu of current garage/punk talent from down home new yak and far beyond. From the New York side, we've got veteran garager Andy Maltz's new band the Piggies as well as Brooklyn's Back CCs. From California, Shannon & the Clams and their poppy house party punk (check 7" Hunk Hunt for clues), from Connecticut hazy garagers Medication (forthcoming LP on HoZac) and from Boston, Tunnel of Love and their unforgettable live show.
Not only that but guest DJ Pat-O, late of Chicago's Rocket Reducer distro, one of the best garage/punk distros to come out of the US in quite a while, plus our own Gaskins spinning punk sides. AND special guests-- one of our favorite modern garage bands, absent from NYC for over 6 months, will be making an appearance as well. All this for $6 at Don Pedro, first band at 10 and whip-tight schedule- for real!

But, we digress. Here's what else is going down this fine, warmer than average November weekend in the big city:

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Get started early with a very special happy hour at Lakeside Lounge: Chandler (Raunch Hands, Lost Crusaders) and longtime accomplice Vignault doing the gospel-blues thing for free while you get your buzz on. Great way to tell the work week that was where to go.

More Manhattan or die:
  • Linda Rizzo's DJing up up up town at Ding Dong Lounge. Expect garage punk, free entry and booze clues.
  • Josh Styles & friends take over Jonathan Toubin's perch at Home Sweet Home on Chrystie. Everybody stomp! FREE
Back to Brooklyn:
  • Numero's Eccentric Soul Revue -- this feels a little like a Dig Deeper ripoff, but could be fun anyway-- Syl Johnson (Different Strokes! the song, not the series), the Notations, Renaldo Domino, and uh... Missy Dee (old school hip hop? ok). It's $25 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. But who are the DJs? Will they bring the dance party?
  • Northhamption, Mass garagerockers Evil Bill are at Don Pedro on a bill we wouldn't otherwise investigate. $?
  • Devils' Night! Finally the name of this night pays off on Friday the 13th-- Cowboy Mark and Miss Mary spin devilish 50's / 60's goodies all night at Diamond Bar in western Greenpoint (near the water)
  • 60's night 'Barf-o-Rama' rides again at K&M with "Otto" Bahn and Miss January. Projections on the wall, slightly overpriced but usually strong mixed drinks, and free entry. Step on anyone with a blackberry.
  • "Pop Love Suicide" - Captain Heartlock leads a rag tag team of DJs including Kittybeat and Lady Byrd at Brooklyn's Beauty Bar through sets of glam, garage, soul & psych. FREE.
SATURDAY:

Tri-State Conspiracy, Arkhams & DJ Phast Phreddie at Bowery Poetry Club for an all ages show of Ska, great DJing and psychobilly. $8 at the door.

Brooklyn's busy Girls at Dawn hit Maxwell's in Hoboken. $?

The Vondells are at Williamsburg's Spike Hill for a free show, hitting the stage around midnight.

Flip City! Jumpy and "Otto" Bahn's 60's night, marks a return at a new venue: Greenpoint's latest hotspot Blackout, on Manhattan Ave near the Greenpoint Ave G stop. It's dark inside indeed but expect these two to brighten it up a bit. Free entry.

Lynne K & DJ Honky return to Union Pool for post-midnight, no cover, DJin' and dancin' in the back room to funk & soul tunes.

Over in Manhattan, Jukebox Jodi leads her "Girls in the Garage" night to new heights at Motor City Bar. Free.

(but of course this is all moot, because you'll be at Don Pedro for our birthday, right?)

SUNDAY:

Daddy Long Legs play the remnants, possibly a burnt out shell of a building, that Don Pedro will be the day after our party. Hopefully there's still electricity and booze. $?

Gentlemen Jesse & His Men from Atlanta are supported by Girls at Dawn at Bruar Falls on Grand St in Williamsburg. $?

Michigan psych/punkers Awesome Color return to favorite haunt Glasslands for a rare appearance. $?

Dave the Spazz and/or Andy Maltz DJ Union Pool (front room).

Quite a weekend-- see you on Saturday, in lieu of gifts, bring money!

Buckets of Rain & Fun in NYC

Rain, rain and more rain... whatta week. Well, it's going to rain some more tonight, a little tomorrow, and then it's supposed to clear up for Saturday night. Thankfully there's a 100% chance of rock'n'roll this weekend (yes, yes, in lieu of rocks, please throw money) if you follow our simple steps.

1. Do the "Friday" !

BROOKLYN-Style:
Dylan "Otto" Bahn and January 1963 return for their monthly Barf-o-Rama 60's DJ gig at K&M Bar in Williamsburg. FREE.

Cowboy Mark & Miss Mary are doing their 50's/60's DJ thing at Diamond Bar in upper Greenpoint. FREE.

DJs Jumpy, Mic-Lo and 2 more are at Legion for another 60's night called FLIP CITY with 2 rooms of fun! FREE.

Captain Heartlock bravely embarks on a new night at Brooklyn's garage punk headquarters, Don Pedro. It's called "Radio Shangri La", and it's in the basement where they let you do naughty things AND play pool while the lovely Bree pours and pretends not to see what you're doing. FREE.

AND DJ Smokestack & Miss Polka Dot (of Tuesday's Hot Dog! Night) will be rocking sets of garage, rockabilly and soul at Matchless. Kitchen open 'til 3 - try the wings. FREE.

MANHATTAN-Style:
If it's live fun you're after, the Chrome Cranks reunite at Santo's Party House in Tribeca, ably supported by New Jersey's Friggs. $?

Also 80's Legend and recent Stooges bassist Mike Watt performs with his "Missingmen" at Mercury Lounge. $?

If you're STILL looking for a 60's DJ night (have you been paying attention?) There's Shakin' All Over Sideways Down at Home Sweet Home (assuming Sr. Toubin hasn't left town again?). FREE.

JERSEY-Style:
Rockabilly Hero Roddy Jackson will be doing a set with the A-Bones at Maxwell's in Hoboken.

2. Rock the "Saturday" !

-the Brooklyn Rock-
Liquor Store opens for Cause Co-Motion! at Bruar Falls on Grand St in Williamsburg. $?

Internet sensations/Westcoasters Pink Reason return to Death By Audio. $?

Tunnel of Love & Awesome Color are doing a Todd P show at Market Hotel deep (deep!) in Brooklyn. $?

Jumpy & Girlsoul spin the soul greats at Huckleberry for SOUL A GO GO! FREE.

AND, last but not least, HULLABALOO! returns to Don Pedro featuring the amazing live Demon's Claws, Brooklyn garagers Organs, Montreal's sloppunkers Nymphets and spookiness of K-HOLES. I'll be DJing (mostly the hot rod stuff I wanted to play last week but couldn't) and so will the Charles. $7 and doors at 9PM. By the way, Pedro's has a kitchen so you can get eats too!

-the Manhattan Moog-

The Bellrays return for a rare NYC appearance with Sister Anne at the Delancey. $?

and Chicago's Mannequin Men play the Cake Shop 4th anniversary party (demand their version of "Little Red Riding Hood" !)

3. Slurp the "SUNDAY"

Instrumentalists Moto-Gators will be slinging a set at Union Pool in the front room. Lil' Killers' Andy will be DJing after. FREE.

By the way, in case you're out, about and in doubt, be sure to point your phone/satellite dish/portable Apple IIe to our new... TWITTER account! Yes, we are THAT lame. You're surprised? Anyway, we'll be posting updates about the goings on about town. Follow us: NYC Garage Punk Twitter.

And if you follow our lead, you'll grow up to be handsome alcoholic losers like us. Yippee!
