Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: something to do (yay!)

This is why we do not mix music and football.

Sunday

I'm sure that some of you know that tonight is Superbowl XLIV. I knew that without looking up the number, thank you*. But here at GaragePunkNYC we don't officially care. We would, however, like to point out a few things:

  • The Superbowl should be over by 11, meaning there's plenty of time to go out afterwards.
  • Several of your favorite bars are showing the Superbowl (Bar Matchless comes right to mind) so your friends can just join you afterwards.
  • The halftime show this year features The Who. Now, I'm not saying that they're exactly in their prime ("And now, a band which could have played Superbowl I..."), I'm just saying that if you have to hang out with your Superbowl-watching friends, you could do a lot worse (e.g. Justin Timberlake again).

After that nonsense has finished, consider heading on over to Union Pool where DJ Dave the Spazz spins in the front room from 10-midnight, followed by DJ Andy Maltz from midnight on spinning a mix of garage, rock-n-roll, oddities and rarities. Or catch DJs Cowboy Mark and Kyle M who are "bringing their funky love" to Coco66. No cover for either I do believe.

Monday

Big Thanks to the Glad All Over!!! Party for making Monday a night worth writing about. This week they're hosting a night of rock-n-roll with The Big Death Scene (formerly Scream and Scream Again), The Anabolics and The Dirty Shames over at 200 Orchard Fontana's in Manhattan. No cover.

In Brooklyn, The Reverend Vince Anderson brings his Love Choir and their gospel/soul sound to Union Pool. Late start (11pm), also no cover.

Tuesday

More free music, starting with a night of insane garage-punk with The Outta Controllers (which includes members of Stalkers and Ex-Humans and members of Ex-Humans), The Back CCs and Foster Care at Union Pool (which is seriously on a roll lately). Fans of funkier sounds can check out The London Souls with Hymns at Mercury Lounge, though this show is not free ($10).

Also tonight it is time for a very special Hot Dog!... because for once I know who's DJing. It's DJ Shimmy, Bobby Boulders (and presumably DJ Jumpy, who is the unofficial emcee of the evening). Also features 2-for-1 drinks, really good bar food, and no cover. Starts at 9:45 (can we just say 10 from now on, please?) Starts at 10 because I say so, dammit.

Marcus

* And here's how to remember: the Giants won Superbowl XLII two years ago. It was awesome.

Happy Birthday To Us!

Not to crow too much but, we're a year old! GPNYC launched October 1st, 2008 with the goal of reducing productivity at as many offices, studios and workplaces as possible. Our evil plan seems to be succeeding, since we've had over 26,000 visits in the past year. Not bad for a site dedicated to "dead/outdated/retro/boring/misogynist/neanderthal" music, wouldntcha say? Feel free to thank Marcus, Charles, Blair and myself next week when you get fired for "surfing profane internet sites" while at work.

While we're hoping that we get 26,000 visits at our birthday party on Saturday in Brooklyn, we'll settle for just a couple hundred of you... we've prepared quite a menu of current garage/punk talent from down home new yak and far beyond. From the New York side, we've got veteran garager Andy Maltz's new band the Piggies as well as Brooklyn's Back CCs. From California, Shannon & the Clams and their poppy house party punk (check 7" Hunk Hunt for clues), from Connecticut hazy garagers Medication (forthcoming LP on HoZac) and from Boston, Tunnel of Love and their unforgettable live show.
Not only that but guest DJ Pat-O, late of Chicago's Rocket Reducer distro, one of the best garage/punk distros to come out of the US in quite a while, plus our own Gaskins spinning punk sides. AND special guests-- one of our favorite modern garage bands, absent from NYC for over 6 months, will be making an appearance as well. All this for $6 at Don Pedro, first band at 10 and whip-tight schedule- for real!

But, we digress. Here's what else is going down this fine, warmer than average November weekend in the big city:

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Get started early with a very special happy hour at Lakeside Lounge: Chandler (Raunch Hands, Lost Crusaders) and longtime accomplice Vignault doing the gospel-blues thing for free while you get your buzz on. Great way to tell the work week that was where to go.

More Manhattan or die:
  • Linda Rizzo's DJing up up up town at Ding Dong Lounge. Expect garage punk, free entry and booze clues.
  • Josh Styles & friends take over Jonathan Toubin's perch at Home Sweet Home on Chrystie. Everybody stomp! FREE
Back to Brooklyn:
  • Numero's Eccentric Soul Revue -- this feels a little like a Dig Deeper ripoff, but could be fun anyway-- Syl Johnson (Different Strokes! the song, not the series), the Notations, Renaldo Domino, and uh... Missy Dee (old school hip hop? ok). It's $25 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. But who are the DJs? Will they bring the dance party?
  • Northhamption, Mass garagerockers Evil Bill are at Don Pedro on a bill we wouldn't otherwise investigate. $?
  • Devils' Night! Finally the name of this night pays off on Friday the 13th-- Cowboy Mark and Miss Mary spin devilish 50's / 60's goodies all night at Diamond Bar in western Greenpoint (near the water)
  • 60's night 'Barf-o-Rama' rides again at K&M with "Otto" Bahn and Miss January. Projections on the wall, slightly overpriced but usually strong mixed drinks, and free entry. Step on anyone with a blackberry.
  • "Pop Love Suicide" - Captain Heartlock leads a rag tag team of DJs including Kittybeat and Lady Byrd at Brooklyn's Beauty Bar through sets of glam, garage, soul & psych. FREE.
SATURDAY:

Tri-State Conspiracy, Arkhams & DJ Phast Phreddie at Bowery Poetry Club for an all ages show of Ska, great DJing and psychobilly. $8 at the door.

Brooklyn's busy Girls at Dawn hit Maxwell's in Hoboken. $?

The Vondells are at Williamsburg's Spike Hill for a free show, hitting the stage around midnight.

Flip City! Jumpy and "Otto" Bahn's 60's night, marks a return at a new venue: Greenpoint's latest hotspot Blackout, on Manhattan Ave near the Greenpoint Ave G stop. It's dark inside indeed but expect these two to brighten it up a bit. Free entry.

Lynne K & DJ Honky return to Union Pool for post-midnight, no cover, DJin' and dancin' in the back room to funk & soul tunes.

Over in Manhattan, Jukebox Jodi leads her "Girls in the Garage" night to new heights at Motor City Bar. Free.

(but of course this is all moot, because you'll be at Don Pedro for our birthday, right?)

SUNDAY:

Daddy Long Legs play the remnants, possibly a burnt out shell of a building, that Don Pedro will be the day after our party. Hopefully there's still electricity and booze. $?

Gentlemen Jesse & His Men from Atlanta are supported by Girls at Dawn at Bruar Falls on Grand St in Williamsburg. $?

Michigan psych/punkers Awesome Color return to favorite haunt Glasslands for a rare appearance. $?

Dave the Spazz and/or Andy Maltz DJ Union Pool (front room).

Quite a weekend-- see you on Saturday, in lieu of gifts, bring money!

They're heeeere...

We may be live-blogging the Mummies shows. It will be like watching a boxing match! On the news! Round-by-round stills and commentary! Yeah!

Monday

Captain Heartlock and Professor Z return to their usual Monday gig spinning Garage and Soul at the Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly. For some reason, they never miss it! Oh yeah!

Tuesday

Thousands of years ago ... at the apogee of the greatest of the great empires of Egypt ... I bought tickets to go see The Mummies at Maxwells. You have to get in on this sort of thing early, folks. They're backed by the Back C.C.s, and they are playing two shows, one at 7:30pm and one at 10:30pm.

As an alternative, check out Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks, and the usual hot DJs will not be there so you'll actually have a chance for once at picking up one of the Gorgeous Hipsters of Greenpoint (GHOGs). Or you might get your kicks dancin' to Soul, Funk and Latin music at Lost & Found at Savalas. No cover! (That's the classy way of saying "free")

Wednesday

The Mummies skip Manhattan* and land in Brooklyn tonight, specifically Southpaw. The Back C.C.s are back as the openers. From what I hear the sound guy has been training on a remote mountaintop in Himalaya for this one.

Check out New York Night Train and their weekly guest DJs spinning Punk and Garage rock at the Motor City Bar, or Mr. Fine Wine as he returns to spin Soul music at his weekly gig at Botanica. Free as always!

Thursday

Now here's something different: DJ Jumpy will spin surf music at Spoonbill and Sugartown Booksellers. Why isn't anyone stopping him**? Well, apparently a famous author is giving a presentation on the Beat Generation in the Los Angeles area (thus the beach music, you see). If you would rather rock out to punk, glam and psych rock, check out the Thursday Night Thump at Enids. Or if you prefer to dance to that sweet Soul music then check out Boogaloo Shampoo at Beauty Bar Brooklyn (not the bar or the event on Fridays in Manhattan). What, two Boogaloo Shampoos? They must be franchising! Yes folks, you too can live the American Dream by owning your own business in the burgeoning bailiwick of boogaloo***... of you could just go dance and have fun.

This weekend...

Two shows by the Detriot Cobras, Hullabaloo!, and many, many great local bands. Check out our calendar.

The dead have returned and they're bringing this town back to life. Yeah. It's confusing, but somehow it works, trust me.

Marcus

* Ha! (That's the classy way of saying "neener neener neener")

** Though I do think that all bookstores should have in-house DJs. Anyone wanna hear my "All Cookbooks 20% Off" mix?

*** My Thesaurus just had a stroke.

**** No dead people were harmed in the making of this blog. We did beat up a yeti though.

Start The Week With Two Bangs

Get ready to be invaded by foreign bands. I see that Mr. Eastwood is ready.

Sunday

Yeah, we already did Sunday, but this particular Sunday is hot enough to do twice. If you haven't caught King Khan and The Shrines yet, they'll be at Santos Party House tonight with Mark Sultan (performing as a 3-piece), France's Magnetix, and other great bands. Don Pedro hosts a fine show as well, featuring Swedish punks The Manikins plus the hot and dirty blues of Organs and local punks The Back CCs (whose name also sounds vaguely dirty) and perhaps (we're not sure) The Jadewalkers. Oh, and let's not forget The Spines, the only punk rock autoharp band ever (how hot is that!) They're playing a free show at the Lakeside Lounge.

Monday

French garage-rockers Magnetix drove good men mad at Lake Johnson last weekend. Tonight they explode at Don Pedro alongside the lo-fi sounds of 999999999 and Oakland's Younger Lovers, plus a "special guest". Considering who the Magnetix have been seen hanging around with lately, that special guest may just be be quite special indeed.

Don't feel like heading to Brooklyn? Then you must be in New Jersey. Don't worry, Maxwell's comes through once again with a show featuring Detroit rockers Electric Six and Living Things. And once again, DJs Captain Heartlock and Professor Z will be spinning Garage and Soul music at the Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly.

Tuesday

The Electric Six and Living Things journey to Manhattan on Tuesday for a show at Bowery Ballroom. If that show a bit out of your price range or just not your thing, consider heading to Bar Matchless for Hot Dog!, where several of the top local DJs (according to these guys) will play garage, soul, and more good stuff just for you. And about fifty other people. Or perhaps you'd prefer Lost & Found DJ Night at Savalas, featuring Soul, Funk, and Latin music. Ya' might just be able to dance to that.

Wednesday

Head to Manhattan on Wednesday to catch New York Night Train DJ Night at the Motor City Bar, or Mr. Fine Wine of WMFU fame will be spinning soul music at Botanica, or perhaps a little of both? Who says you have to choose?

Thursday

The legendary British band Eddie & The Hot Rods will be cruisin' into Southpaw this Thursday night, bringing with them Primadonna and one of the several bands called Poison Arrows. Not legendary enough for ya'? Then how about Mike Watt and The Missingmen (yes, featuring the Mike Watt of the Minutemen and more recently the Stooges) at Maxwell's.

If you're more in the mood to groove, check out Mr. Robinson and DosPlatos as they spin 50's, 60's and Soul music at Heathers, Boogaloo Shampoo at the Beauty Bar, Swimsuit Edition at Savalas, and Thursday Night Thump at Enid's. Yeah that's right, "and". Thursday is a long, long night. Take it all in.

We taught the rest of the world to rock. Now they're returning the favor.

SPRING ING ING

Sorry for the long drought between posts, garagepunknycareenos, I was across thee pond in the Burg of Ham, but lo, I hath returned and I bring thee the good word of Alcoholism!

All kinds of goodly getdown (mostly DJ gigs) this weekend but plenty of fun to be had.

Let's start with tonight, shalleth wee?

FRIDAY
DJ Gigs

Shakin' All Over Sideways Down - Jonathan Toubin returns to his weekly 60's gig at Home Sweet Home in the city after a trek down to SXSW in Austin. FREE.Chickaboom! - Melissa-Anne and Jenni's monthly 50's/60's dancey party at Legion in Williamsburg with special guest Charles Gaskins and ME. I'll be slinging lots of fab platters I picked up down in Chattanooga including the famed "Chattanooga Walk" ! FREE.

Real Gone! at Otto's - Kitty Beat and friends return with their monthly party... no band
info as of press time but there will definitely be good dj tuneage. FREE.

Devils' Night - Cowboy Mark and Miss Mary's monthly 50's/60's Garage & RnB Dj gig at the Diamond Bar at Greenpoint. FREE.

Live Shows

The Weakends (France), Golden Triangle @ Don Pedro, Brooklyn -- Golden Triangle is back from SXSW after reportedly (rumor alert) winning some kind of contest down there (label deal yet?) -- The Weakends from France are in town, are on rob's house, I hear they're pretty good. Cheap well liquor til 10. Cover (not sure how much).

The Twistaroos (Norway), The Fleshtones, the A-Bones, The Demands @ Southpaw, Park Slope, Brooklyn -- here's an old school garage night for ya. The Fleshtones' faithful will be there (shoutout Fuzzco!) as will lotsa other folks who like their beer cold and their women easy! $10

SATURDAY
DJ Gig

Soul Clap! Jonathan Toubin's Soul DJ night at Glasslands near the river in Brooklyn is back with the famous dance off contest... whoever wins gets half the door money. $3 cover.

Live Shows
Anabolics, Jesse Bates & His Flying Guitars, Yum Yums, Jadewalkers, Back CCs @ Don Pedro - this is my pick for Saturday if you're still alive after Friday. Here's a fat bill of
garage, punk, and power pop. Yum Yums are ALSO from Norway (ever get the feeling you've been had?) and the Anabolics, 'Walkers and 'CCs will provide the necessary lesson in how to do the "Manhattan Avenue". You know what I'm talking about. Cover... $5,$6,$7?

Delia "Dee Dee" Gartrell with Sweet Divines @ Dig Deeper, Five Spot Soul Supper Club, Brooklyn -- monthly classic soul night returns with another Atlantian soul/funker. (Once) married to Mighty Hannibal, Gartrell fits into that late 60's "sistah funk" genre with mid-tempo sass to spare. DJs Mr Robinson and Honky round out the night with frenetic soul tunes. $15 at the door.

SUNDAY - Weakends & Ex-Humans @ Lit Lounge in Manhattan. Weekend capper!

Well, that's it for me. Hope to see y'all Friday night, wear your dancing shoes and your stovepipe!

Neither Rain, Nor Snow, Nor Hail...

Montreal's Nymphets play Matchless in Brooklyn Friday.
Nothing will prevent NYC's garage punkers from drinking, partying, puking and rocking this week/end.

It's awful outside but there IS reason not to lock yourself in your room until March, starting with
tonight's Anabolics show at Otto's Shrunken Head. It's part of a series (every other week?) called Copycats in which a band performs covers of some other band's songs. The Anabolics have decided to take on the Sex Pistols; better yet will probably be their originals.

I believe there's a cover, not sure how much, but it might be worth it just to see if there's any monkey business as there was when Thee Yetis played this night a couple of months ago. Let's just say that they had the plug pulled on them, 'Get Back'-style.

Also tonight in the big ol' city is Mr Fine Wine at his usual perch (Botanica). Fine Wine's DJ sets at last Saturday's Dig Deeper were probably the swinginest of all. As a side note, Dig Deeper was a great party in general-- Hannibal was on form! Check out some insanely watermarked / copyrighted photos by the photog who kept jamming his camera in my face here: flash-movie-so-you-don't-rip-him-off photos by oblivious photoloser.

Also I took some mediocre after party dance photos.

Anyway back to tonight! There's also Jonathan Toubin at Motor City in Manhattan doing his regular NYNT thang.

Next up, Thursday night-- Looks like an interesting show featuring ATL/Brooklyn punks Ex-Humans, Philly's Love City and Brooklyn's longtime 70's rockers Electric Shadows plus 2 more at... ahem... Crash Mansion. Doors are at 7:30 (huh?) and the place looks like a club from 1995, but I'm betting the $2million sound system will do interesting things with these bands' sonics...

Also Thursday we assume Jonathan Toubin's at Beauty Bar with the no-cover-all-soul Boogaloo Shampoo and has his satellite party going at Enid's in Greenpoint.

Friday, not as busy as last week but still some good stuff. Live show-wise, we've got the Back CCs, the most excellent boy/girl-vox punks Nymphets (from Montreal) and the Dirty Shames at Matchless in Greenpoint for Brenda's SuperModelDeathDive party. Brenda will also DJ with guest Jesse "Gasface" who recently provided some extremely entertaining reviews to the new Humanbeing Lawnmower Zine (worth it for the reviews & comics alone).

Also live we've got a performance by new "Hillbilly/Bop/Boogie" band Susquehanna Industrial Tool & Die Co at Phast Phreddie's Wang Dang Doogle gig at Soundfix Lounge (the former coffee shop that's now a band with a small stage). Phreddie will be DJing all 50's all night. No cover on this one either.

AND 60's garage/blues/punkers Organs are at Don Pedro with "Everyone" which, in the very least, is a good band name.

If you're looking for some pure DJ gigs, Melissa-Anne and Jenni return with their 50's/60's DJ night at Legion in Williamsburg called CHICKABOOM! this time featuring guest djs Dave the Spazz (WFMU) and Andy from the Little Killers / Underthings. No cover.

Also going on is Sr. Toubin's Shakin' All Over Sideways Down at Home Sweet Home in the city (no cover).

Saturday... it's a bit of a wasteland, which will help make Jumpy's Soul-A-Go-Go gig at Huckleberry all the more fun. It's soul tunes all night, no cover and some good (if somewhat pricey) food.

See ya 'round suckers!
