Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: something to do (yay!)

This is why we do not mix music and football.

Sunday

I'm sure that some of you know that tonight is Superbowl XLIV. I knew that without looking up the number, thank you*. But here at GaragePunkNYC we don't officially care. We would, however, like to point out a few things:

  • The Superbowl should be over by 11, meaning there's plenty of time to go out afterwards.
  • Several of your favorite bars are showing the Superbowl (Bar Matchless comes right to mind) so your friends can just join you afterwards.
  • The halftime show this year features The Who. Now, I'm not saying that they're exactly in their prime ("And now, a band which could have played Superbowl I..."), I'm just saying that if you have to hang out with your Superbowl-watching friends, you could do a lot worse (e.g. Justin Timberlake again).

After that nonsense has finished, consider heading on over to Union Pool where DJ Dave the Spazz spins in the front room from 10-midnight, followed by DJ Andy Maltz from midnight on spinning a mix of garage, rock-n-roll, oddities and rarities. Or catch DJs Cowboy Mark and Kyle M who are "bringing their funky love" to Coco66. No cover for either I do believe.

Monday

Big Thanks to the Glad All Over!!! Party for making Monday a night worth writing about. This week they're hosting a night of rock-n-roll with The Big Death Scene (formerly Scream and Scream Again), The Anabolics and The Dirty Shames over at 200 Orchard Fontana's in Manhattan. No cover.

In Brooklyn, The Reverend Vince Anderson brings his Love Choir and their gospel/soul sound to Union Pool. Late start (11pm), also no cover.

Tuesday

More free music, starting with a night of insane garage-punk with The Outta Controllers (which includes members of Stalkers and Ex-Humans and members of Ex-Humans), The Back CCs and Foster Care at Union Pool (which is seriously on a roll lately). Fans of funkier sounds can check out The London Souls with Hymns at Mercury Lounge, though this show is not free ($10).

Also tonight it is time for a very special Hot Dog!... because for once I know who's DJing. It's DJ Shimmy, Bobby Boulders (and presumably DJ Jumpy, who is the unofficial emcee of the evening). Also features 2-for-1 drinks, really good bar food, and no cover. Starts at 9:45 (can we just say 10 from now on, please?) Starts at 10 because I say so, dammit.

Marcus

* And here's how to remember: the Giants won Superbowl XLII two years ago. It was awesome.

One busy, busy week.

This weekend is on fire
but try to stay focused,
'cause this week is real busy too.

Monday

A couple of free shows tonight. The Studio at Webster Hall hosts a show headlined by The Girls at Dawn. Can't vouch for the other bands, but it's free, so just show up late. Speaking of late... The Reverend Vince Anderson's residency is still going strong at Union Pool. Starts at 11pm.

Tuesday

This month's Underclass Revue at Bowery Electric is going a little nuts. The show features psycho-billy from The Arkhams and The Hydes, plus the old-school rock-n-roll of Charlie and the Crybabies. Looks like a $6 cover for this one. Also on the agenda for fans of funk: The London Souls bring their funk/punk sound to Mercury Lounge for a three-week residency starting today. $10 cover for that one (it's the Mercury Lounge, you see...)

Also on the calendar is a Brooklyn tradition, an institution, a standard of excellence, and many things, but definitely not a surprise... it's Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless! Featuring DJs spinning Rock-n-Roll, 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

For the second Copycat of this month The Sweet Ones and Guitar Bomb pay tribute to the music of Neil Young. DJ Xerox and DJ Shimmy (of GaragePunkNYC fame!) spin cover tunes all night. Aside from all the covers, no cover.

Also on the agenda: DJ Reverend Vince spins Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas; New York Night Train Wednesdays at Motor City Bar with weekly guest DJs spinning punk, rock, punk rock, and all things loud; and Mr. Fine Wine of WFMU spinning Soul music at Botanica. All three are free.

Thursday

A couple of shows tonight. The Demands play a free, early show at the Lakeside Lounge. The Othermen and The Electric Mess headline a bill over at The Bowery Electric. Let's call it The "The" Party. The 'The "The" Party' cover is $8.

MONDAY MUCKS

Hope y'all had a good time this past weekend cuz it's Monday which means it's a long way to next weekend. Ouch.

I had a grand ol' time DJing at Legion with Melissa-Anne, Jenni and Charles on Friday night-- they had to turn on the lights at 4 to get people to stop dancing! Saturday I was recording a podcast with a bunch of folks but I hear the Yum Yums show at Don Pedro was great.

Here's a link to some pics from the Friday Southpaw Twistaroos/Fleshtones/A-Bones show:
Fleshtones blurry myspace pics
And some others:
Ana Anabolic's better flickr pics of Twistaroos & Fleshtones

ALSO, I had time this week to finally post a bunch of videos going back to January... so check out these gems:

January 16 @ Union Pool:
Siberians | The Above

March 7 @ Don Pedro:
Bass Drum of Death
| Ryan Pits & The Boy Toys |
Turbo Fruits 1 | 2 | Demon's Claws 1 | 2

In terms of what to do tonight and tomorrow... lezzee...

Glasslands tonight, looks like Gringo Star from Atlanta is back (again!). Not sure who else is on this Monday bill (indie rock?), but their show tomorrow night at Mercury is sold out.

Tomorrow night Tuesday, looks like the usual hoedown at Hot Dog-- that's Matchless in Greenpoint. I'll be slinging platters from 10pm-11 in the middle of a grab bag of Brooklyn's best garage, soul & beat djs. 2 for 1 drinks all night as always plus a great kitchen. The best Tuesday party I've ever seen!

Also Tuesday I think the soul djs might be back at "Lost & Found" night at Savalas in Williamsburg. No confirmation on that one.

It's kind of a quiet week, mostly DJ gigs for your pleasure, but we'll check back in later on in the week and see if anything's shakin'.

Try not to kill anybody!

SPRING ING ING

Sorry for the long drought between posts, garagepunknycareenos, I was across thee pond in the Burg of Ham, but lo, I hath returned and I bring thee the good word of Alcoholism!

All kinds of goodly getdown (mostly DJ gigs) this weekend but plenty of fun to be had.

Let's start with tonight, shalleth wee?

FRIDAY
DJ Gigs

Shakin' All Over Sideways Down - Jonathan Toubin returns to his weekly 60's gig at Home Sweet Home in the city after a trek down to SXSW in Austin. FREE.Chickaboom! - Melissa-Anne and Jenni's monthly 50's/60's dancey party at Legion in Williamsburg with special guest Charles Gaskins and ME. I'll be slinging lots of fab platters I picked up down in Chattanooga including the famed "Chattanooga Walk" ! FREE.

Real Gone! at Otto's - Kitty Beat and friends return with their monthly party... no band
info as of press time but there will definitely be good dj tuneage. FREE.

Devils' Night - Cowboy Mark and Miss Mary's monthly 50's/60's Garage & RnB Dj gig at the Diamond Bar at Greenpoint. FREE.

Live Shows

The Weakends (France), Golden Triangle @ Don Pedro, Brooklyn -- Golden Triangle is back from SXSW after reportedly (rumor alert) winning some kind of contest down there (label deal yet?) -- The Weakends from France are in town, are on rob's house, I hear they're pretty good. Cheap well liquor til 10. Cover (not sure how much).

The Twistaroos (Norway), The Fleshtones, the A-Bones, The Demands @ Southpaw, Park Slope, Brooklyn -- here's an old school garage night for ya. The Fleshtones' faithful will be there (shoutout Fuzzco!) as will lotsa other folks who like their beer cold and their women easy! $10

SATURDAY
DJ Gig

Soul Clap! Jonathan Toubin's Soul DJ night at Glasslands near the river in Brooklyn is back with the famous dance off contest... whoever wins gets half the door money. $3 cover.

Live Shows
Anabolics, Jesse Bates & His Flying Guitars, Yum Yums, Jadewalkers, Back CCs @ Don Pedro - this is my pick for Saturday if you're still alive after Friday. Here's a fat bill of
garage, punk, and power pop. Yum Yums are ALSO from Norway (ever get the feeling you've been had?) and the Anabolics, 'Walkers and 'CCs will provide the necessary lesson in how to do the "Manhattan Avenue". You know what I'm talking about. Cover... $5,$6,$7?

Delia "Dee Dee" Gartrell with Sweet Divines @ Dig Deeper, Five Spot Soul Supper Club, Brooklyn -- monthly classic soul night returns with another Atlantian soul/funker. (Once) married to Mighty Hannibal, Gartrell fits into that late 60's "sistah funk" genre with mid-tempo sass to spare. DJs Mr Robinson and Honky round out the night with frenetic soul tunes. $15 at the door.

SUNDAY - Weakends & Ex-Humans @ Lit Lounge in Manhattan. Weekend capper!

Well, that's it for me. Hope to see y'all Friday night, wear your dancing shoes and your stovepipe!

HOT ACTION FOR A (RELATIVELY) BALMY WEEKEND!

Make plans to go out tomorrow night New York-- Summer is back! That's right, it's going to be 44 whole degrees on Friday-- so break out the bermuda shorts!

Thankfully there's plenty of hot live action this weekend, especially tomorrow for which we have an astounding 10 events listed on the garage show calendar.

FRIDAY NIGHT

MANHATTAN
The Electric Mess & Jock @ Lit Lounge ($6) -- 60's garage oldschoolers Electric Mess join forces with 70's style punkers Jock at Lit Lounge for what's sure to be a good bill... just leave at midnight when the awful house iTunes DJ starts.

MIDNITE TILL DEATH @ CAKE SHOP - The Back CCs (with Rico back from Japan), The Choke and Organs are doing Cake Shop's MTD party which again, starts around 10:30. FREE.

Jimmy & The Wolfpack @ Lakeside - Great to see these ex-New Orleanians back to gigging with a FREE show at Lakeside Lounge. Expect songs about midgets, Coney Island and plenty of saxomophone. 11PM sharp.

Real Gone @ Otto's -- we assume this is happening but we haven't heard about bands or DJs!

Shakin' All Over Sideways Down -- Jonathan Toubin's regular 60's DJ gig at Home Sweet Home on Chrystie St.

BROOKLYN
Golden Triangle @ DeathByAudio ($?) - another show for these very active Brooklyn avant punkers.

Soul Habit DJ party @ Monkeytown -- Jumpy returns with a soul gig @ this interesting Restaurant/Bar/Performance Space (back room). No cover and apparently a special guest "Masked" DJ!
DJ SHIMMY @ MATCHLESS -- I'm back to my longest running gig at my favorite Matchless. This time I'm following a relatively strict clock, starting with 70's Power Pop & Punk at 10:30 and running through Modern Garage Rock, 60's Gospel 45s (starts at midnight sharp!), Honkin' R'n'B and Doowop and Soul. Special guest set by Miss Mary-Clancey at 1:45! FREE and the KITCHEN will be open til 2-- try the new burgers/wings/barfood menu!

NEW JERSEY
Gripweeds & Doughboys @ Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park -- the Doughboys are a recently reunited supergroup of 60's NJ veterans and include songwriter Richard X. Heyman in their ranks.

The Muffs & The Nouvellas @ Maxwell's ($12ADV/$14DOS) -- Suddenly reactivated NJ garage/indie group the Muffs headline a bill with Brooklyn's soul group the Nouvellas.

SATURDAY NIGHT
Quiet in comparison to Friday, but still some great events to shake it at:

BROOKLYNTHE MIGHTY HANNIBAL w/ Sweet Divines @ Dig Deeper/Five Spot Soul Supper Club ($7ADV/$10DOS) - Atlanta soul/funk legend is back with his first show up here in quite a while. He was backed ably by a similar band at Mccarren Pool a while back and still (even at a very advanced age) has the energy to kick out "Fishin' Pole" as well as my personal favorite gospel-funk monster "The Truth Shall Make You Free". Live sets generally start at midnight at this place.

The Muffs w/ Muck & The Mires @ Southpaw ($12ADV/$14DOS) - NJ's Muffs are opened for this time by Boston's greatest Merseybeat style band (think Dave Clark Five sans saxophone), Muck & The Mires.

SOUL CLAP! @ Glasslands - New York Night Train's soul dj party & dance contest is back. $3 cover (and free beer 10-11pm?).

The temperatures might not be that hot outside, but this Spring is shaping up to be epic. Hope to see some of y'all at Matchless Friday!

GIVE THANKS FOR BOOZE! A GPNYC T-DAY GUIDE

SOME of us get through thanksgiving (the dealing with family, the possibly working the next day and the hating our bosses for it...) by overeating, but that's not "very garage"... unless you're getting high on the Tryptophan! So instead let's give thanks for the cause of (and solution to) all of our problems: booze!

You can accomplish this by attending one or more of the following events:

Tonight Mr Fine Wine is in his usual spot at Botanica spinning his amazing collection of 45s while Jonathan Toubin is at Motor City Bar spinning garage, glam & punk (having apparently lost a large number of records in a taxi on saturday morning, you might buy HIM a beer!)

Tomorrow, on the day itself, the only apparent gig (besides your mom putting on the christmas CDs/cassettes for the first time this year) is Mr. Toubin and others at Brooklyn's Enid's.

After the turkey, there's tons of events this weekend to dance at (AKA "work off the calories" or insert other holiday cliche here):

FRIDAY:
Jumpy & Dylan "Otto" Bahn are at Brooklyn's Daddy's from 10PM on, spinning 60's garage (FREE).
Melissa Anne & Jenni host CHICKABOOM! a night of 50's & 60's DJin' just a few blocks away at Legion (FREE).
For Manhattan-or-Die people, there's REAL GONE at Otto's with Tom Ward (ex-Dansettes/Nashville Ramblers) plus the DJing of regular honchos Heartlock, Kittybeat, January 1963... (FREE) And Sr. Toubin parties on at Home Sweet Home on Chrystie St. with his weekly Shakin' All Over Sideways Down gig(FREE?).
There's also a Humanbeing Lawnmower "Benefit" party at Matchless hosted by Avi with Edison Rocket Train and a couple of others ($5).

SATURDAY:
I'm (yes, ME!) DJing at Matchless with DJ Smokestack-- I'll be slinging recent acquisitions from my Portugal trip including some weirdo Soundtrack stuff, 60's AFRICAN garage (REALLY!), Brazilian Surf, Chico Magnetic Band, etc. etc.

Also, Avi hosts the second Humanbeing Lawnmower "benefit" at Don Pedro in Brooklyn featuring the Back CCs and WLWL ($6).

Last but not least, King Khan & BBQ Show are headlining a bill with Golden Triangle and Jacuzzi Boys at Music Hall of Williamsburg ($13?). I can only assume there's an afterparty somewhere. Sunday night they're at Bowery.
