Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: something to do (yay!)

This is why we do not mix music and football.

Sunday

I'm sure that some of you know that tonight is Superbowl XLIV. I knew that without looking up the number, thank you*. But here at GaragePunkNYC we don't officially care. We would, however, like to point out a few things:

  • The Superbowl should be over by 11, meaning there's plenty of time to go out afterwards.
  • Several of your favorite bars are showing the Superbowl (Bar Matchless comes right to mind) so your friends can just join you afterwards.
  • The halftime show this year features The Who. Now, I'm not saying that they're exactly in their prime ("And now, a band which could have played Superbowl I..."), I'm just saying that if you have to hang out with your Superbowl-watching friends, you could do a lot worse (e.g. Justin Timberlake again).

After that nonsense has finished, consider heading on over to Union Pool where DJ Dave the Spazz spins in the front room from 10-midnight, followed by DJ Andy Maltz from midnight on spinning a mix of garage, rock-n-roll, oddities and rarities. Or catch DJs Cowboy Mark and Kyle M who are "bringing their funky love" to Coco66. No cover for either I do believe.

Monday

Big Thanks to the Glad All Over!!! Party for making Monday a night worth writing about. This week they're hosting a night of rock-n-roll with The Big Death Scene (formerly Scream and Scream Again), The Anabolics and The Dirty Shames over at 200 Orchard Fontana's in Manhattan. No cover.

In Brooklyn, The Reverend Vince Anderson brings his Love Choir and their gospel/soul sound to Union Pool. Late start (11pm), also no cover.

Tuesday

More free music, starting with a night of insane garage-punk with The Outta Controllers (which includes members of Stalkers and Ex-Humans and members of Ex-Humans), The Back CCs and Foster Care at Union Pool (which is seriously on a roll lately). Fans of funkier sounds can check out The London Souls with Hymns at Mercury Lounge, though this show is not free ($10).

Also tonight it is time for a very special Hot Dog!... because for once I know who's DJing. It's DJ Shimmy, Bobby Boulders (and presumably DJ Jumpy, who is the unofficial emcee of the evening). Also features 2-for-1 drinks, really good bar food, and no cover. Starts at 9:45 (can we just say 10 from now on, please?) Starts at 10 because I say so, dammit.

Marcus

* And here's how to remember: the Giants won Superbowl XLII two years ago. It was awesome.

Go, Go, Go-Go!

OK! it's on! No more slow weekends from here on out. Instead, incredibly over-booked weekends packed with too many options to count (just try it).

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Maybe a mellow start to your night with an acoustic Georgiana Starlington at Williamsburg's Live with Animals gallery (and some other groops we don't know) $6
--OR--
A rude awakening to a night of "classic punk covers" by the Black Angels (no, not the Texas band) at Desmond's in the city.

Round about 10 o'clock, everything else kicks into gear. If it's live action you're after, there's Mission of Burma at Bowery for $20... or, considerably cheaper, there's Real Gone! which this month features Love-Struck and the Hydes (Otto's, FREE).

On the DJ-side of things, you've got:
  • Jonathan Toubin at Home Sweet Home
  • Phast Phreddie with special guest DJ Lenny Kaye (Nuggets!/Patti Smith) @ Trophy Bar (Williamsburg)
  • A night of rocksteady, soul & reggae @ Huckleberry in Williamsburg called "Another Scorcher"

SATURDAY:

Even MORE action. Let's start it off with the live side of things:
  • The Spines hit Passout Records with their "autoharp punk" -- wait, Passout's still there?! FREE
  • The Girls at Dawn are at Death By Audio $?
  • Blues/garage/rockers Chicken Snake, Two Tears (ex-Red Aunts) and the Othermen are at Don Pedro $?
  • The Stalkers, Nouvellas, Tough Shits & Foster Care are at Cameo (back of Lovin' Cup Cafe) $8
  • Soul/Funkers Ex Caminos are at CoCo 66 in Greenpoint
  • Mission of Burma AGAIN at Bowery $20
  • Andy Maltz's Piggies are at Bar Nine in Hell's Kitchen FREE
When it comes to dancin', saturday night is alright:
  • NYNT's Soul Clap! returns to Glasslands with its $100 dance prize, judged this week by Captain Heartlock, Tara F, and Cowboy Mark among others. Cover has risen to $5 but that won't keep the hordes out.
  • An all female soul DJ night hits Huckleberry with Connie T. Empress, Mary-Clancey and Girlsoul FREE
  • The return of "the shank" - Bury Me in Brooklyn's afterhours club returns, this time near Union Pool on Ainslie St ("Badlands") . It kicks off at 4am-ish, probably has a cover (?) and features Jonathan Toubin post-Clap. It rocks 'til 8AM. Enjoy the bathroom lines.
SUNDAY

DJs Baz & Tito at Motor City spin punk, Bo Diddley and god knows what else. FREE

Andy Maltz & WFMU's Dave the Spazz DJ the front room at Union Pool all night. FREE

That's it for me... bundle up youngins!

Just mentally edit out the ice and snow.

The charming young men of Wellington Ladies' Welfare League
headline at Don Pedro on Thursday.
Don't they look warm?

Monday

DJ Knifefight spins all "pre-Beatles" rock-n-roll at Art Land Bar. No cover, free heated pool (you wish... free billiards), starts at 10.

Tuesday

Well now here's something a little different. Over at Goodbye Blue Monday in Brooklyn, Legs McNeil will give a free reading from his new book "I Slept With Joey Ramone". Mr. Neil is the founder and editor of Punk magazine, so he might be serious, or at least really entertaining. I'm going to mentally edit out the slideshow, though.

As always you can and should check out Hot Dog! at Bar Matchless. Featuring DJs spinning 50's and 60's R'n'B, Soul, Funk, Garage Rock, Punk, and more. No cover, 2-for-1 drinks all night, from 8 'till late.

Wednesday

Hopefully it's time once again for CopyCat at Otto's Shrunken Head. I say hopefully because one band canceled. We know that The Siberians and DJ Xerox will be there. Anyone want to volunteer to be the "special guests"? No cover.

Once again Wednesday is the day for free DJ nights. In Brooklyn, DJ Reverend Vince will spin Soul, Gospel and R&B at Savalas. In Manhattan you can head on over to Motor City Bar for New York Night Train Wednesdays, featuring DJs spinning punk/rock/hard stuff all night. Then of course there's Mr. Fine Wine spinning his best Soul grooves at Botanica (in Manhattan).

Thursday

Finally, time for some rock-n-roll! Journey to deepest darkest Greenpoint (namely Coco66, a block from the Greenpoint G stop) Thursday night to catch LoveStruck, The Dirty Shames, Humboldt Fog and Fuck Fuck (a band which I refuse to Google). Or head on over to the Center of the Universe (aka Don Pedro) for Punk Rawk with WLWL, Foster Care and Gimmehead (not, even, thinking about Googling that one). No clue how much either show costs, but they should both be good.

And more... The hardest-workin' band in soul business, Nouvellas play their latest "last show of the year" at Mercury Lounge where they're opening for British folk-blues singers Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs. And over at Enids, this week's Thursday Night Thump features recently married celebrity(-ish) DJ couple Josh Styles and Sophie Thunders.

Pre-Thanksgiving Feast in NYC

Hey you turkeys! Still a week to go before Thanksgiving, but there's plenty to feast your ears and feet on this weekend in NYC.

Especially,

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

Kick off the weekend with longtime scenemaker Chandler and partner in crime Vignault at Lakeside Lounge during happy hour (6:30 to 8:00 or so). It's free and full or great tunes.

Sticking with Manhattan, you could head to the Cake Shop afterwards for Imaginary Icons and Manikin. II's first show in a while. $8

Or you could head over to Otto's for another installment of ABC Rebel Night, a boppin' set of rockabilly and early r'n'b to dance to. Free.

You could head a bit uptown to Hell's Kitchen for the return of the Underthings with Born Loose at Bar Nine in Hell's Kitchen (9th ave). We think this is a free show too.

Over at Home Sweet Home on Chrystie St, we expect Jonathan Toubin to be rockin' his usual "Shakin' All Over Sideways Down" night. Free this week?

Back over in Brooklyn, there's still plenty to do...

At the "loft" at Public Assembly, it's the second edition of the new Subway Soul Club with DJs Phast Phreddie and Ty Jesso. $6 cover but it's got the exclusive club room vibe and is sure to be the real deal. Look for the door marked "70" next to Music Hall of Williamsburg.

INSIDE Public Assembly (the main space), there's a rock'n'roll show of the most explosive kind: Boston's baroque roquers Upper Crust return and are more than ably supported by the excellent Othermen. $10 at the door.

Further down in Brooklyn you'll find the Reigning Sound, the Swingin' Neckbreakers, and the Jayvons at Southpaw for $12. You might try to cop tickets online as it could sell out at the door.

And over on 3rd ave, you'll find the Brought Low at Hank's Saloon doing the free show thing.

Let's not forget the Garden State-- if you've over in Jersey, check out the Doughboys & the Grip Weeds at the Record Collector in Bordentown, NJ. Early show should be fun.

SATURDAY:

No Manhattan happenings as far as we know, here's some Brooklyn action for you:

Infamous dirty "proto-rapper" Blowfly is at Knitting Factory with Jonathan Toubin in between sets. $14

Later on, Toubin hikes over to Glasslands for his "Soul Clap" night with dance party contest and prize. $3 cover.

Nearby at the Hope Lounge, Capt Heartlock & Kitty Beat are once again doing their "Salvation" night with all kinds of great 60's grooves. Free.

Continuing on, NYC's best punk bands, Liquor Store and Foster Care, play a free show at Bruar Falls with Manikin among others.

Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves rock the Brooklyn Bowl. $8.

Over at Union Pool, it's Alana Amram & the Rough Gems. $?

Way out on Broadway, it's a party called "Twist'n'Shout" at the Beauty Bar. The bands don't sound all that great although they seem themselves as "garage punk" bands. Still, Brenda Brand is guest-DJing it and they promise "bubblegum and girl groups" so it sounds like a decent night, especially for FREE.

Once again not forgetting the Garden State, Subway Surfers and Jukebox Zeros will be at the Lamp Post in Jersey City for a free show.

SUNDAY:

Narrowly missing former bandmate Greg Cartwright, Jack Oblivian will be at Southpaw with his Tennessee Tearjerkers. This is a rare appearance folks-- Jack don't come around these parts too often; expect country rock of a sort that will impress. $10

As always, Dave the Spazz and/or Andy Maltz will be Djing the front room at Union Pool.

Wau what a week!

The Above (see Tuesday) at Union Pool

Monday

Okay, the the official GaragePunkNYC calendar has nothin' for Monday. However, the Almost GaragePunk calendar (which I just pulled out of my ass) has something on it. Anyway, I'm really sick of trying to come up with new ways to say "nothing's happening", so here's something.

Anna Copa Cabanna will be doing an "unplugged" show at Zebulon starting at 8pm. Not sure if that's just music or music and dancing, but the show is definitely free. Monday is also the last day of the Coney Island Rockabilly Festival. Not sure when the music starts, but something or other starts at 2pm. This also seems to be free.

Tuesday

The last Hullabaloo! was so awesome they decided to throw another a mere four days later. Head on over to Don Pedro Tuesday night at catch Spanish (yes, from Spain) rockers Wau y Los Arrrghs!!! along with local boys The Above (see above) and the local boys and girls in Foster Care (despite the fact they look too old for that sort of thing). With DJs Charly Manson and Pete Solvenly.

Just because three-quarters of the Hot Dog! DJs will be at Don Pedro doesn't mean it ain't happening. It's happening this and every week at Bar Matchless. Yes, even after the Apocalypse there will be cockroaches with funny haircuts and pointy shoes going to Bar Matchless for this thing. Featuring DJs spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B, and 2-for-1 drinks. From 8 till late, no cover.

Wednesday

Wau y Los Arrrghs!!! are! still! here! Wednesday night they'll be at Bar 9. Also featuring: salsa tasting night. Yes, really. At least the band gets top billing. I mean here, not on Bar 9's website. Apparently we're a bit more excited about these guys than they are, but if you missed 'em on Tuesday, this is your second chance.

Wednesday is also the night for Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head. This week they're going waaaay back with tributes to Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly and Otis Redding. We have also been promised a "special surprise guest" instead of the usual mundane surprise guest.

What else? Well, if you're suffering from excessive stability of the head and neck then hit Motor City Bar for the the punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. If on the other hand you prefer your evenings chill, check out Botanica for a night of soul grooves spun by Mr. Fine Wine of WFMU. Both fun, both free.

Thursday

Portland garage rockers Nice Boys visit our favorite Cake Shop on Thursday. They headline a great bill which includes the psych-flavored Birds of Avalon (from Raleigh), Brimstone Howl (from Omaha), and the geographically indecisive Baby Shakes.

As always you have more options for Thursday. You can catch Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, and Thursday Thump, an evening of Punk, Glam, Psych rock (and basically whatever the DJs like) at Enids.

Marcus

...put a picture of The Above on this post just to tell that one stupid joke. Really.

No Bummers in the Summer

Mike Edison's birthday Saturday: Go Gorilla!

YES. More. Rain.

There's not much left to say about it, but don't let the Summer slip away because August starts tomorrow. Can you believe it?!

One thing I can believe is that New York Garage Punks are a bunch of fucking lions. Yes, lions! Why you ask? Because we're all apparently Leos! This weekend features the birthdays of no less than Steve Myers (Mighty Fine), Jake Noodles (WLWL/Don Pedro) & Mike Edison (Edison Rocket Train, etc). They are proving their cred by drinking themselves into comas and performing, both at the same time, or whichever comes first, etc... so dig:

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

In the slickest of boroughs, we've got a number of fine doo-dahs for the doing:

The Anything People play their first show in well over 6 months at this month's edition of Real Gone at Otto's with DJs Capt. Heartlock & Kitty Beat. FREE.

Kid Congo Powers & Howie Pyro team up to fill a Jonathan Toubin-sized void at Chrystie St's Home Sweet Home for what could be a good night of DJing for the dancefloor. Not sure if it's free, but if not the cover's probably pretty small.

The Mighty Fine celebrate the birthday of frontman Steve Myers along with probably the best new Brooklyn punk band, Foster Care, at Hell's Kitchen's Bar Nine. FREE.

In the most bagelicious of boroughs, there's still a gaggle of goo-gaws for the getdown:

The Wang Dang Doodle returns with host Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus plus our very own Charles Gaskins and the wonderful Gaylord of WFMU to DJ surfin' and twistin' music. What could be more perfect for the Summer time. It's at the Trophy Bar on Broadway (near the Hewes St JMZ / 2 stops into Brooklyn). FREE.

Boston main man of soul, Eli 'Paperboy' Reed, opens the first edition of 'Tear It Up', a new soul DJ gig at Brooklyn's Bell House. It takes place the last Friday of the month every month, is FREE and features guest DJs (no info at Press time who that might be tonight). For those of you who don't know, Bell House is in Gowanus, now easier to reach via the expanded G train but still slightly more than a hop, skip or jump. We suggest doin' the worm. Fits the environs real nicely.

And at Brooklyn's home of garage punk, we've got the K-Holes, Foster Care, the Men and WLWL, who will be celebrating frontman Jake's birthday. We're guessin' the walls of Don Pedro will once again see the nether regions of Jake's anatomy... Not sure on cover. It might be free if you show your bits too!

Not forgettin' the Garden State (the most corrupteriffic of states), the Swingin' Neckbreakers & the Gripweeds are at Asbury Lanes in beautiful downtown Burbank Asbury Park. $7.

SATURDAY:

To start, we've got TWO (count em- TWO!) afternoon parties this Saturday in the Grand Duchy of Markowitz:

Mike Edison brings his Space Liberation Army (a virtual definition of Supergroup with Jon Spencer, Hollis Queens & Dean Rispler) to favorite Bushwick restaurant Roberta's on Moore St near the Morgan L around 3PM. Guess what? It's his birthday, and he's got a new paperback version of essential tome "I Have Fun Everywhere I Go" and DJ Viking Thrust (of now defunct LiveFastDie and slightly less defunct Jail Hippies/Indian Casino) *and* the Wild Yaks are throwing down. You'll need a jazz cigarette just to RELAX after this gig. PS) we think it's FREE.

Meanwhile, back in Williamsburg, it's almost a redux of Thursday's Bowery Electric gig, this time at Passout Records with Greatest Hits, Pretty Vanilla, Andy Animal, Tough Shits & Sorceress. FREE. We hear they're cracking down on brownbagging now though. LAME.

What else... what else... right!
SATURDAY NIGHT!

It's a heartbreaker at Greenpoint's Matchless featuring the Doughboys (reunited 60's garage group with Richard X Heyman), the Beat Rats, the Von Ghouls and Tight White Jeans. Note: Get there by 10 or you won't be able to get to the live room at the back due to the rather popular OHIO PARTY with their distinctly ungarage records... sniff). $7.

Over at Union Pool, it's more of a heavy/stoner rock night with Heavy Hands and the Atomic Bitchwax.

Don Pedro's got the remnants of the Passout show-- Greatest Hits, Pretty Vanilla, Tough Shits...plus the Rats and the Ex Humans.

And back in the city, Unsteady Freddie continues his reign of surf at Otto's.
SUNDAY

I'm really doubtin' you'll be doing much after Saturday, but if so, Andy Maltz will be at Union Pool as always.
