Wau what a week!

Monday

Okay, the the official GaragePunkNYC calendar has nothin' for Monday. However, the Almost GaragePunk calendar (which I just pulled out of my ass) has something on it. Anyway, I'm really sick of trying to come up with new ways to say "nothing's happening", so here's something.

Anna Copa Cabanna will be doing an "unplugged" show at Zebulon starting at 8pm. Not sure if that's just music or music and dancing, but the show is definitely free. Monday is also the last day of the Coney Island Rockabilly Festival. Not sure when the music starts, but something or other starts at 2pm. This also seems to be free.

Tuesday

The last Hullabaloo! was so awesome they decided to throw another a mere four days later. Head on over to Don Pedro Tuesday night at catch Spanish (yes, from Spain) rockers Wau y Los Arrrghs!!! along with local boys The Above (see above) and the local boys and girls in Foster Care (despite the fact they look too old for that sort of thing). With DJs Charly Manson and Pete Solvenly.

Just because three-quarters of the Hot Dog! DJs will be at Don Pedro doesn't mean it ain't happening. It's happening this and every week at Bar Matchless. Yes, even after the Apocalypse there will be cockroaches with funny haircuts and pointy shoes going to Bar Matchless for this thing. Featuring DJs spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B, and 2-for-1 drinks. From 8 till late, no cover.

Wednesday

Wau y Los Arrrghs!!! are! still! here! Wednesday night they'll be at Bar 9. Also featuring: salsa tasting night. Yes, really. At least the band gets top billing. I mean here, not on Bar 9's website. Apparently we're a bit more excited about these guys than they are, but if you missed 'em on Tuesday, this is your second chance.

Wednesday is also the night for Copycat at Otto's Shrunken Head. This week they're going waaaay back with tributes to Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly and Otis Redding. We have also been promised a "special surprise guest" instead of the usual mundane surprise guest.

What else? Well, if you're suffering from excessive stability of the head and neck then hit Motor City Bar for the the punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. If on the other hand you prefer your evenings chill, check out Botanica for a night of soul grooves spun by Mr. Fine Wine of WFMU. Both fun, both free.

Thursday

Portland garage rockers Nice Boys visit our favorite Cake Shop on Thursday. They headline a great bill which includes the psych-flavored Birds of Avalon (from Raleigh), Brimstone Howl (from Omaha), and the geographically indecisive Baby Shakes.

As always you have more options for Thursday. You can catch Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, and Thursday Thump, an evening of Punk, Glam, Psych rock (and basically whatever the DJs like) at Enids.

Marcus

...put a picture of The Above on this post just to tell that one stupid joke. Really.

MONDAY MUCKS

Hope y'all had a good time this past weekend cuz it's Monday which means it's a long way to next weekend. Ouch.

I had a grand ol' time DJing at Legion with Melissa-Anne, Jenni and Charles on Friday night-- they had to turn on the lights at 4 to get people to stop dancing! Saturday I was recording a podcast with a bunch of folks but I hear the Yum Yums show at Don Pedro was great.

Here's a link to some pics from the Friday Southpaw Twistaroos/Fleshtones/A-Bones show:

And some others:
Ana Anabolic's better flickr pics of Twistaroos & Fleshtones

ALSO, I had time this week to finally post a bunch of videos going back to January... so check out these gems:

January 16 @ Union Pool:

March 7 @ Don Pedro:
Bass Drum of Death
| Ryan Pits & The Boy Toys |
Turbo Fruits 1 | 2 | Demon's Claws 1 | 2

In terms of what to do tonight and tomorrow... lezzee...

Glasslands tonight, looks like Gringo Star from Atlanta is back (again!). Not sure who else is on this Monday bill (indie rock?), but their show tomorrow night at Mercury is sold out.

Tomorrow night Tuesday, looks like the usual hoedown at Hot Dog-- that's Matchless in Greenpoint. I'll be slinging platters from 10pm-11 in the middle of a grab bag of Brooklyn's best garage, soul & beat djs. 2 for 1 drinks all night as always plus a great kitchen. The best Tuesday party I've ever seen!

Also Tuesday I think the soul djs might be back at "Lost & Found" night at Savalas in Williamsburg. No confirmation on that one.

It's kind of a quiet week, mostly DJ gigs for your pleasure, but we'll check back in later on in the week and see if anything's shakin'.

Try not to kill anybody!

Mercury Lounge Review: Pierced Arrows Still Got It!

Oregon's Pierced Arrows played Mercury Lounge Wednesday night.

Let me quickly add to Blair's post by saying that tonight's Pierced Arrows show at Maxwell's is recommended. Wednesday's show at Mercury Lounge was fantastic... I was definitely surprised that the band are in top form, both of their voices are on, the new drummer is great, overall a great show.

Also Toody promised the band would be back in NYC once a year at least from now on. AND If you're wondering whether they do Dead Moon songs, they do and HOW. Encore consisted of "It's OK" and "54-40 or Fight". Killer!

I took some video mid-set, although we were SO close in to the band that it's a bit distorted. Also it was shot rather stealthily from hip high, due to my recent experience at Bowery Ballroom (owned by same family/consortium as the Merc) where I was apprehended "illegally videotaping" (security's words) a show by the Above (that video is also on youtube: above at bowery ballroom).

Hump Day / Yom Kippur Eve Celebration!

Thee Yetis appear at Otto's at 9PM tonight.

Tonight, being Hump Day AND Yom Kippur Eve (fasting means no alcohol, so get it in tonight!), is a particularly good time to check out New York's midweek action... check out our garage punk shows calendar including these events:

First up is the happy hour DJing of Miss Christina Ginger (Anabolics) and Frank (of Brooklyn's Above) at The Creek in Long Island City. Starting at 5 and running 'til at least 8 (possibly later), you can grab some Mexican food and hang at this weird venue near the B61 bus, the G train, or the 7 train (if you're coming from Midtown, in which case I suggest you start with some tequila).

Next we've got Thee Yetis, a formerly DC-based and now NYC-resident garage/punk band playing what we believe to be a free set at Otto's around 9PM. These youngins' tunes vary between Pebbles-ish garage to 70's punk pop and now have demo CDs on offer (cheap).

Finally we've got ever-present DJ Jonathan Toubin at Motor City Bar at 10PM, where there will be the usual crowd downing 'em rapidly and listening to the punkier side of his collection.

Whatta Night!

The Above played an amazing set on an otherwise uninspiring bill at Bowery Ballroom this Saturday to a large group of devoted fans and some stunned/amazed punters expecting cock rock.

Sadly, I was harrassed by Bowery security for "videotaping" (their words) the show. I did get some video which will be posted shortly... thankfully the vocal harmonies and harmonica rang out particularly well in such a big space while Ihan's guitar flourishes with a hint of late 60's psych were spot on.

Later, the after party in Tribeca was a blast too with Quadrophenia on the bigscreen, classic 80's garage revival tunes pounding and a good group dancing the night away.

Gentlemen, more please.
