I hope you all got to go to the beach and feel sand between your toes and sea mist in your hair, to have a shitty part time job that you told to shove off, to make out with the person you really wanted to, got food poisoning from a hot dog, rode the Cyclone, caught a firefly in your hand and let it go and all the other amazing things the season promises.

Reflect on it!

Friday September 3rd:

A night of moody low fi rock shenanigans beings with the hauntingly crazy X-Ray Eyeballs, who are on a tear through town these days with a new lineup as they headline DIY Williamsburg partyhole Death By Audio along with visiting San Francisco band Royal Baths, girl/boy fuzz punk duo Hunters and Mountain Cult. First band is on at 9pm, $7 cover for all this noise…

The Cakeshop hosts a rare evening of acoustic perfromances by kids known more for loud ruckus razing, with slightly quieter than normal performances by Tommy Volume (Star Spangles) and briefly-back-in-town Jadewalkers lead demon Emma Vikingskull (more relating to her later in this post), with performances by the bands Two Tears and  The BurnHearts following. It’s FREE like cigarette butts on the street! Emma, Bobby Boulders and our pet freebird and fellow GPNYC colleague Drew Redmond spin records between and after sets from 8pm onwards…

I believe that Kick and Hiro of The Baxx SiSi’s will be running their monthly banana Go Go Gorilla tonight but I haven’t heard official word on bands or nuthin’ yet! I’ll assume it’s a go, and you should go-go cause’ it’s always fun at Otto’s Shrunken Head. No cover, 10pm till late

Grace of Spades monthly party at rock and roller bowling alley of Williamsburg The Gutter is now moving to the FIRST Friday of the month! Roll on by after 9pm for a good dose of island sounds (rub-a-dub, rocksteady, delay-ridden soul) for no cover!

Garage Lady La La Linda keeps uptown Manhattan hip with her weekly throwdown at The Ding Dong Lounge, where she drops deep cuts of trippy 60′s psych, garage punk, soul and retro funk from 10pm till close, with nary a cover charge in sight…

And of course, Taxidermi-Chic (making up stupid words one blog at a time) spot Home Sweet Home hosts Jonathan Toubin’s dance-a-rama Shakin’ All Over Under Sideways Down tonight! Not sure if he’s got a guest tonight but fantastic selections of bad motherUHN! rock and soul music on ’45 vinyl is guaranteed. Metropolis Vintage Happy Hour is in effect prior to his main event from 8pm till 11 for no cover with Outside Eye’s Ethan Miller spinning international funk.

Saturday September 3rd

Hunx and His Punx and The K-Holes make for a one two punch of cool at The Mercury Lounge for the late shows starting at 10:30. Only $10 for some of the finest grime going today! Better hurry

Over at Otto’s Shrunken Head, it’s another edition of THE ONLY surf rock party in this damn town, Unsteady Freddy’s Surf Rock Shindig. Freddy hangs ten with the twang, spinning surf rekkids in the front room, while in the back you can catch live performances by The Rebel Surfers, Strange But Surf, Thee Icepicks and The Isotopes, each excellent at what they do. All for the cost of ZERO dollars. From 9pm till the end!

DJ C’mon returns to her monthly perch at Avenue B’s Idle Hands downstairs lounge where she plays garage rock, power pop, and non-shitty indie from10pm till late! Have a whisky and a spin, plus I hear tell there’s some good N’awlins style food nibles to be had…

Tighten up your wig for Flip City tonight! I keep hearing nothing but good about what times are to be had at Veronica’s Peoples Club in the uncharted outskirts of Greenpoint Brooklyn when Jumpy and Strage Haze frontman / guitar god extraordinaire Big Sir spin non stop garage rock movers from 10pm till close.

Sunday September 4th

This is the way freaks like us like to end our summer:  Booze, BBQ, Scratchy Records and Rock and Roll REGRETS! The big to-do today will be the Labour Day Pains party presented by Sugar Shack A Go Go at Brooklyn Fireproof in Bushwick BK, a raucous fucking event with trashy garage punk bands, DJ’s, grilled food and a whole lot of brouhaha. The highlight of the night will be a reunion, a once in a almost never performance by The Jadewalkers, who’s lead singer Emma has returned from across the blue sea to terrify you for one night only! They are joined by The Enthusiasts, trash saxers The Jigglers, Philly trouble kids The Improbables and Party Pigs. I’ll be on hand to spin records along with Drew, Charles Gaksins and Bobby Boulder. A lot of fun for only $6 dollars, eh?

WFMU dudes Dave the Spazz and Andy Matlz continue their Sunday sets at Union Pool, spinning 50s and 60s soul, garage and other rarities in the front room from 10pm till close and providing the perfect soundtrack for making out with unfortunate strangers and getting a case of taco-mouth. No cover!

Monday September 2nd

Nothing much on the calendar for Monday besides sweet, sweet RECOVERY. Odds are you took your brain out the the back and put it down Old Yeller style with your filthy three day weekend ways…but if you’ve got anything left in the tank and are looking to hang you can find Drew at Macri Park spinning his rare as fuck rock and r&b ’45s and cracking wise. I’m almost certain there will be BBQ of some sort, being a holiday and all. Ask Goldilocks what time they’re starting!

Oh Hai!

Happy Sunday, punks. Hope you’ve digested everything you stuffed down your mouth and poured down your gullet this past week (month?) and got everything you asked Santa for.

By the time this post goes up, NYC, nay, the entire tri state area and a good part of the east coast will be under the icy grip of  SNOWPACALYPSE 2010: THE RETURN of FROSTY McGEE. There’s a real good chance the blizzard is going to play havoc with your plans for Sunday evening at the least, so make sure to check in advance, if you are brave enough to venture out. Be careful and drink whisky.

Sunday Dec. 26th – Happy Boxer Day, Canooks!

‘For Steppers Only‘ goes down tonight at Grand Street Williamsburg’s Huckleberry Lounge, where DJ Nogood Nick spins mod, jazz, samba, and other various genres of funky fun for warming up through the night…9pm start I do believe…

Dave the Spazz and Andy Maltz hold down the fort at Union Pool, spinning their usual grab – bag of goodness. Tonight might be a fun night to hang out there, what with the snow in the back yard and the quiet-tude of the post Christmas evening and all that jazz…the dance floor is all yours.

Laura Rebel Angel celebrates the hangovers of Cristmas present tonight at Bedlam Bar (40 Ave C, between East 3rd and East 4th streets, E.VIL NYC), spinning Rockabilly, Jump Blues and Honky-Tonk and holding court over an evening of re-gifting! Drop off your unwanted misfit toys/ugly sweaters and get someone elses! This jam starts early evening (6pm) and goes on till midnight.

DJ’s Sweet V and Tru Tones present a night of 60”s and 70′s rub-a-dub, rocksteady, reggae-break beats and lover’s rock at Savalas in Williamsburg for CRUCIAL SUNDAYS. 10pm – 3am!

Monday December 27th

I believe that Mr. Drew Redmond is doing his thing at Macri Park tonight, no doubt melting the snow squalls with his hot garage and r&b 45s…and his farts…as for always, Spindletop goes down tonight at Botanica’s on East Houstan near Mulberry Street, for your weekly fixing of soul, jazz and r&b…I think there’s a guest DJ tonight but what does I know…free as always!

Tuesday December 28th

Ho Ho Horrors! If it’s Tuesday then it’s HOTDOG at Mathchless, where some of your favorite DJ’s (Many of your GaragePunk NYC writers and various scenesters of the scene) spin garage, psychedelia, R&B and soul for drunk kids who probably could care less because they’re too focused on drowning their brains in the 2 for 1 drink specials!

A very happening edition of The Underclass Revue takes place tonight at Bowery Electric, where The Jigglers, Twin Guns and Dead Tricks wreak havoc upon your ears and your boredom! There’s NO COVER for this one and there’s gonna be an open Vodka bar from 10-11pm. Delish!

SUNDAY!

Mars Bar, the infamous punk rock dive, is having a little shindig at six o’clock.  Every month they have an artist showcase their work inside the bar AND paint a new mural on the outside of the building.  This month it’s Avi Spivak, the bad ass illustrator who’s made all kinds of great gig posters and art for  Vice, Max R&R and other well known well-knowns.  He’s also the guy behind Humanbeing Lawnmower magazine.  Local band Daddy Long Legs will be playing, too.  I think this is free.

Over at the Bell House you can watch TV.  Seriously.  It’s the Mad Men finale.  It’s sold out.  So if you didn’t know about this already you’re SOL.  DJ Ambassador Hazy is spinning soul music.  That’s the only reason this is even being mentioned on here.

Over at Niagra you can hear Seanzi from The Othermen DJ.  Speaking of The Othermen, their LP on Killer Diller Records is out and only $10!  Pick up your copy HERE!

Drew “Biggins” Redmond will be DJing over at Macri Park.  This place isn’t a park, and it’s down the street from Union Pool, which isn’t a pool.  Drew is probably my favourite DJ in NY.  He has amazing records and will melt your face off with them.  Garage, tittyshakers, R&B, soul, punk… This shit is FREE!

Spindletop Soul-Jazz will be going on at Botanica, as usual.  Mr Perry Lane DJs bossa nova, soul, R&B, and all kinds of cool stuff.

TUESDAY!

[Just got word that Audacity cancelled their trip.  LAME!]  Over at Cake Shop there is some CMJ show going on.  I love Cake Shop but I find CMJ annoying.  I’m not too sure on the line up for this night, but I do know that Audacity is playing here, at some point.  They’re California kids that play crappy punk music that is awesome.

HOT DOG is going on at Matchless, as always.  It’s two for one drinks, good music, and sluts.  Garage, rockabilly, punk, soul, funk, R&B, surf…  Free entry.

Over at Manhattan Inn you can check out their Heaven & Hell night.  It starts at seven with the Rev. Vince Anderson playing “Dirty Gospel” on the ol’ Joanna, then at eleven switches to Jahna Rain and Das Booty DJing Soul 45.  This shit is FREE.

And, as always, you can check out Dave The Spazz and Andy Maltz at Union Pool.  They do their thing, and they do it well.  It’s free entry and they have pretty great tacos for sale out back.

The only thing I know about tonight, as usual, is the Spindletop Soul-Jazz night at Botanica.  There is nothing else I know of going on this night, so go to this if you want to mod out with your rod out.

Twig The Wonderkid is DJing at Happy Endings for his Disco Down night.  It’s a mix of New Wave, Post Punk, Disco, Indie, and Electro.  I have no clue about cover charge or time.

And then we have trusty ol’ Hot Dog at Matchless.  This week Mary-Clancey is DJing the early shift.  I think Todd Spinn is doing the middle shift, and I think I, Charles Gaskins, might do the late shift.  Two for one drinks all night.  Free entry!  Drunk whores.

We’ve had a bit of debate over whether to include Deadbolt on our calendar. I think they’re basically a surf-rock band rather than a “psychobilly” band so we should give ‘em a mention. They’re definitely unique and may just be worth checking out at Bowery Electric tonight, though with a $15 cover I doubt anyone outside of the rockabilly scene is going. On the other hand, if you like openers The Turbo ACs, The Tombstone Brawlers, and Psycho Charger then this might be the show for you.

If now, how about heading to Union Pool and dancing to Garage Rock, R&B, oldies and oddities with DJs Dave The Spazz and Andy Maltz? No cover, though in this weather it’s gonna be packed ’cause everyone will be inside where it’s warm.

Moving up in the world, local punks German Measles are opening for local more-melodic-and-artsy rockers Vivian Girls at Brooklyn Bowl. That’s a free show ladies and germs, starting at 7pm. Show up early if you want to stand around inside.

Also tonight, a “benefit for cancer” over at Asbury Lanes over in New Jersey. You thought all those Jersey kids were so lumpy because they worked out and/or got siliconed up? Nope, cancer. So sad. The show features the garage-country assault of the Ribeye Brothers. The suggested donation is $10.

Watch go-go dancer Anna Copa Cabanna valiantly attempt to avoid being upstaged by Jake. DJs Derrick Mangroo and Captain Heartlock will keep you dancing all night, or at least until the party gets shut down, flooded, causes a citywide power outage, or gets attacked by giant poodles.

I have a hard time believing that someone actually named it Ashford & Simpson’s Sugar Bar, but I guess that must be a real bar since the Ex-Caminos are playing a show there on Tuesday. Never been there myself, but for fans of funk and R&B this it might be worth checking out. The cover is $10 and there is a two drink minimum, but that’s for two sets.

Apparently someone here at GaragePunkNYC has something against Valentine’s Day, ’cause the calendar is a complete mess. It appears that the Bowery Boys are playing a free show at Otto’s Shrunken Head, a venue which sounds like it needs some Viagra. Okay, in all seriousness it is a free show at a cool if really-really-not-romantic venue, but we have no clue who the other (ahem) four bands on the bill are.

Also tonight is the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre at Le Poisson Rouge. It’s an evening of dancing to some great DJs including Cowboy Mark, Twig the Wonderkid, and possibly Jukebox Jodi. However, despite what our calendar says it does not appear that The Othermen will be performing. You might also head to Union Pool to catch DJs Dave The Spazz and Andy Maltz spinning their peculiar mix of garage rock and more. Not a bad place to be if you’re single on V-Day (or any other day, really), and it’s free, depending on what the meaning of the word “it” is. For this particular venue, there may be many valid meanings…

I am a fan of any holiday which gets me a day off from work, and President’s Day is no exception. Unfortunately it appears that pretty much everyone else is also taking the day off… except for The Reverend Vince Anderson, whose gospel/soul residency continues at Union Pool.
