It’s a bit less exciting than the marching and slogan shouting of May Day celebrated everywhere else in the world, but at least it’s a three day weekend.

This particular LDW starts off with a bang and ends with a whimper… or does it? read ’til the end:

TONIGHT (Friday):

Big Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys bring their swing & rockabilly to Brooklyn’s Southpaw after last night’s Maxwell’s stand. Sandy is great, but he’s paired with some roots rockers for some reason this time around. Looks like at least $15 at the door, maybe $20.

Over at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, the Nouvellas reunite with friends the Black Hollies for a combo bill of freakbeat & soul. It’s $10 at the door.

Mr Fine Wine will be DJing in Jonathan Toubin’s absence at LES’s Home Sweet Home, which means even more great soul & maybe even some danceable gospel. FREE.

Smashed! Blocked! returns to Beauty Bar in Manhattan. Not sure of the guest DJs for tonight, didn’t see a post. FREE.

Over at Williamsburg’s Bruar Falls (catacorner across the street from Trash Bar), there’s a psych/ish bill featuring the Runaway Suns, who seem to take inspiration equally from 60′s pop and 90′s stuff like Brian Jonestown & Spacemen 3, and the Smith Westerns from Chicago. Heavy Hands are NOT playing this bill as previously thought. Cover is $6.

And last but certainly not least, Hullabaloo! returns to Union Pool in Williamsburg. We’ve got a pretty fat bill here, headed up by Arizona’s Love Me Nots, a pretty buzzy femme-fronted garage punk band. Their new album is out in a couple of weeks and I’m told there will be advance copies! This is your last chance to catch ‘em in NYC before they head out to NJ and other parts. Plus we’ve got more than able support from 60′s garage punks the Electric Mess, Powerpunkers the Anabolics and return of one of my favorite New York bands, the Above! All that and Charles and I will be throwing down on the turntables (totally different sets from last week’s Shoutin’ School I might add). $8, doors at 9– that’s sharp people, the Lifeguards at the Pool run a tight ship!

SATURDAY:

The Black Hollies rock an early show at the Mercury Lounge… sounds like if you’re not there by 8, you’ll miss em!

New York’s newest (and least typical) Rockabilly band Love-Struck will be at LES’s Bowery Electric with some other bands we’re not familiar with…

Unsteady Freddie continues to rock his never ending Surf Nite at Otto’s…

and… that’s it? I guess everyone’s out of town!
SUNDAY:

On what should be a good day to party, we’re only seeing two possibilities:

Voodoo Flats at Beauty Bar — a weekly rockabilly party. Unless that’s been cancelled, since we haven’t seen any posts about it! (help!)

DJ Andy Maltz @ Union Pool – At least Andy’s always there!

That was kind of a sad ending to the Summer, right? Well, surprise, surprise, Charles and I are not letting it end that way. Tuesday night, that’s right, FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL OMG, we are bringing the greatest Spanish garage band and living legends WAU y Los ARRRGHS!!! to Don Pedro for one last burst of fun. Also on the bill are the fabulous Above and the high energy Foster Care and it’s only $5. Doors at 9pm sharp and Wau on stage by 11:30 ! Even Soccer Moms are welcome!

SHIMMY

It is just me or has this month been really stressful? I don’t just mean work and personal life stuff, I mean the music has been extra loud and crazy. The Brimstones yesterday, the show at Don Pedro the Saturday before, the show at Don Pedro the Saturday before that, the last few Jadewalkers shows… it has been a wild month!

Now I hereby declare that it is time to chill. Summer is ending. We’re all slowing down a little bit. Time to sit back with a carefully placed ice pack or two and just enjoy life.

Monday

Yeah right. Monday and the last day of the month and you think people are putting on shows? If you actually have any money left go catch a movie or something.

Tuesday

Hot Dog!, get ‘yer Hot Dog! here! This one’s made of the finest ingredients: DJs spinning Garage Rock, Soul and R&B, 2-for-1 drinks, good bar food, and chess hustlers. As compared to real hot dogs, which just contain DJs and old chess pieces. This week and every week at Bar Matchless starting at 8.

Wednesday

All right, we finally know who will be playing at Don Pedro on Wednesday. The lineup will be: Organs, Madam Robot and the Lust Brigade, and Humboldt Fog (but not The Othermen).

If you’re in Brooklyn and in the mood for even more variety, check out Living For Kicks at the Satellite Lounge. DJs Popwell and Bunny Punch spin 60s Garage, Rocksteady, R&B, Soul, and even a little VU/Roxy Music type stuff.

In Manhattan, another exercise in contrast with two very different DJ nights. The famously grungy Motor City Bar hosts the punk/rock/hard stuff night called New York Night Train Wednesdays. At the other extreme, Botanica (which is decorated like your grandma’s house) is the venue for Mr. Fine Wine‘s night of classic Soul grooves.

You can pick your poison, but the poison always wins.

Thursday

Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys land at Maxwells. Yet another “distracted” air traffic controller? No! Not this time! They’re bringing their classic rock-n-roll sound to New Jersey along with country crooner Eilen Jewell. They’re also at Southpaw on Friday in case you feel like waiting or refuse to leave the high-sales-tax zone.

Also on the calendar: Brooklyn is the home of Boogaloo Shampoo, a night of Soul music at Beauty Bar Brooklyn, and of Thursday Thump, an evening of Punk, Glam and Psych rock at Enids. Manhattan is the place to catch DJs Mr. Robinson and DosPlatos spinning 50s, 60s, and Soul music at Heathers. Don’t panic, you have lots of options.

Take a deep breath.

Now breathe out.

Now keep doing that for the next 70 years or so. Less if ya’ feel like it.

Marcus
