Friends: it’s that time of year again, when young hippies everywhere celebrate Hitler’s birthday by getting high and tossing around ye old hackysacke.

Thankfully, we live in New York City. So, with a little luck, you’ll be spared Dave Matthews Band, Phish and other crypto-Christian Rock bands in their full glory.

TONIGHT (FRIDAY):

It’s another one of those crazy Fridays followed by a nearly-dead Saturday. I guess you promoters haven’t been listening to us; that’s ok– we’ll let you duke it out for the audience!

Start early tonight with the return of LIVING FOR KICKS, a great night of 60′s garage rock 45s hosted by DJs Popwell (of Take My Tuesdays fame) and Lil’ Jerk (of Move Your Mule among other nights). They recently scored so bigtime they had to ship boxes of records back from the Midwest. They spent oodles of dough, but you won’t have to shell out even one clam to get into this cool happy hour shindig at HiFi, one of the few remaining cool joints in Alphabet City. 6-10PM.

Another happy hour kicks off at 7 at Beauty Bar: Crystalblu rocks it up for you folks.

On to the shows… it’s all Brooklyn tonight:

  • The Giraffes, the Live Ones (a Drug Front records band with an ex-Fuzztone on board), and 1-800-BAND at Trash Bar. 9PM $8?
  • White Mystery hosts a record release party at Big Sky Works on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg; trapeze artists, VJs, Habibi and a couple of more bands round out the bill. $10
  • New Jersey’s “psychedelic power pop” group the Grip Weeds play their first show this year at Union Hall in Park Slope supported by the Above. $8
  • Some sorta punk rock show at the Charleston tonight with Family Fun. No details to be found. $?

Back to Manhattan, here are the late burn DJ nights starting around 10PM:

  • Mick Collins, “the King of Detroit”, of the Gories, Blacktop & Dirtbombs (duh) is DJing Motor City on Ludlow. FREE
  • Josh Styles fills in for Shakin’ All Over Sideways Down at Home Sweet Home with Joel Blackstone of Tropicalia in Furs, and Dos Platos de Bamalam $3 or free before 11
  • Guest DJ Rockin’ Daddy O spices up Rebel Night at Otto’s Shrunken Head. Banzai! FREE

SATURDAY:

Whoops! This just in: it’s RECORD STORE DAY Saturday. The only event of note we’re aware of is at Generation Records in the West Village. Paul Collins Beat & the Night Birds are performing for free. So cram yourself in there around 4PM for the fun– and support your local independent record store!

It is going to rain Saturday, so I guess it’s OK that we only have 2 ways to shake.

Liquor Store headlines a welcome home show for Organs, who have been touring the South and Midwest the past two weeks.  Also on the bill are Burning Itch and the Jigglers… and I believe, our own DJ Drew Redmond. No fail! $8

DJ C’mon keeps holding it down in Alphabet City with her retro rockin’ night Saturday Takeover at Idle Hands (downstairs) Avenue B. FREE
