Starting things off around 9:30 or so will be long-time NJ rockers, Holmes, with High School Sweethearts’ vocalist Cynthia Santiglia joining in on backing vox. Yell out for “I’m A Rocker”. Sandwiched between the two is the first NJ reunion by 90s NY/NJ/Philly faves, The Friggs. Sure, they did Philly in late August, NY in mid-September, but they were fan faves in the Garden State, as well. As of now, there are no other shows booked, so this may be your last chance to see them. What are they like? Great!!! Four lovely ladies, pounding out garage, surf, a touch of r’billy, good melodies, and a “dash of attitude” (to quote their song, “Juiced Up”).

Once that’s done, it’s off to Fontana’s at 105 Eldridge St. in Manhattan for Subway Soul Club’s tribute to the Empire State Soul Club. The Empire State Soul Club started in the mid-late 80s and ran at a few different locations in NYC, most notably the North River Bar on Hudson. The mainstay DJs were Connie the Empress, W. Lee, & Jeff the Chef. Both Connie & Jeff will be spinning this Friday night and it is rumored that W. Lee will likely be hanging out, as well. From what I hear, a bunch of other old ESSC members are also going to be spinning, including the omnipresent DJ Jumpy, WFMU DJ Gaylord Fields, Maxwells mainman Todd A (also the brains behind the Telstar, Satan, and Candy record labels), and Steve Greenberg, who put together the 9-CD Stax/Volt box that collected stuff from ’59-’68. (Note: Steve got nominated for a Grammy for that box, which he decided to do after coming down and seeing the excitement of the ESSC.)
